ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 14 HURLING:

Pride of place this week goes to our Under 14 hurlers who saw off a gallant Lismore team to win their County Shield Final on Tuesday evening last in Fraher field Dungarvan.

Once the ball was thrown-in, the team got down to business straight away, with a fine point from play from James, before a placed ball point from Paul doubled the lead, and the same player got a quick second point from play, following some excellent work from Logan at centre back. The forwards were putting the Lismore defence under the cosh. Good play from Jamie who saw Paul in a scoring position, and he did the honours with another point.

Despite the early dominance, a quick break from Lismore saw them almost in for a goal, but a smart save from Tyler prevented them from a certain goal. With Dean, Matteo, and Conor giving little away in the defence, the forward line was given plenty of ball, and in one such case, the lads were almost in for the opening goal, when Ryan was first to react to a loose ball, only to see his shot go narrowly wide.

Further scores from Logan, increased the lead, and with the team in control, two further goals chances went abegging when Dion and James saw their shots brilliantly saved by the Lismore goalkeeper. Just on the half time break, a second point from James ensured a 0-7 to 0-1 lead at the break.

Ferrybank started the second half strongly, and it looked like one of those nights, when goal chances from Alex, James, and John were once again saved by the Lismore goalkeeper who was keeping his side in the contest. Crucial blocks from Fionn and Jackson prevented a Lismore chance, while at the other end another nice score from James extended the lead further. Fair play to Lismore, as they kept plugging away, and again, Tyler in goal was called into action saving a close-range shot, which was destined for the net. Nice link up play from Sam and Ben, saw the ball passed into James, and he obliged with another point. With the game in its closing moments, the Ferrybank defence were determined not to have their goal breached, with Logan, Oscar, Jack, Caiden, Conor, and Mikey holding firm at the back, and virtually with the last play of the game, a lovely team move saw Paul put over point number 11 for the team to run out 0-11 to 0-1 winners.

Well done to all the boys who have put in a lot of hard work throughout the season, and certainly they enjoyed the celebrations at the end. The club would like to thank the mentors and all those who came along on the night to support the team during the campaign.

TEAM: Tyler, Matteo, Conor, Dean, Fionn, Logan, Oscar, James, Jackson, Alex, Dion, Paul, Jamie, Ryan, Sam, Ben, Mikey, Caiden, Jack.

UNDER 16 FOOTBALL:

Hard luck to the combined Ferrybank/Erin’s Own team, who were defeated in their opening game on Sunday morning against Roanmore in Cleaboy. The lads will have learnt a lot from the game, and next up is a trip to Abbeyside this coming Thursday, October 2nd against Ballinacourty with a 7pm throw-in, and all support will be welcomed.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Our Under 13 hurlers will start their championship games with a trip to Leamybrien next Friday evening, October 3rd at 6:30pm with Kilrossanty providing the opposition, and again, all support welcomed on the night.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Ferrybank’s Junior Footballers will play Butlerstown in the quarter finals of the Tony Kirwan Plant Hire sponsored competition. The game will take place on Sunday, October 5th at 1:30pm. At this point in time, no venue has been assigned, so please keep an eye out on the club’s social media for an update.

CAMOGIE:

Ferrybank Junior Camogie team have qualified for the County final in two weeks’ time with a hard-fought win over a gallant Gailtír side at SETU Arena last Sunday. The team had built up a healthy half time lead, but credit to Gaultier, as they came back strongly in the second half, but Ferrybank held their nerve, and ran out 3-11 to 2-09 winners, and now go on to the County final in two weeks’ time where An Rinn will provide the opposition, and hopefully everyone will come out and support the team, as they have put in a huge effort this year.

Well done to the Under 15 side that travelled to Portlaw last Saturday morning, and came away with a great win against the hosts in a tough game. Next up, is a home match in two weeks’ time against Gaultier.

DÉISE DRAW:

The fourth Déise Draw of the year will take place this coming Friday, and once again, we wish everyone the best of luck in it, and thank you once again to everyone who purchased tickets.

DILLION QUIRKE GOLF CLASSIC:

Up to forty golf teams took part in the Dillion Quirke golf classic last Friday which was held at the Waterford Golf Club. Good conditions on the day saw some very good scores being returned by the golfers, with plenty of thrills and spills on the course itself.

Overall, it was a fantastic success, and thanks to all who took part in it, to the people who sponsored prizes, and refreshments, and to Waterford Golf club for their help and assistance in organising the event on the day, and to the people who contributed to the fund itself.

But a special word of praise to Conor Haley and his family for hosting the Golf Classic, and no doubt will have been delighted with the excellent turnout. A lot of hard work and effort went into this event, and Conor and his family are hoping that the proceeds raised will provide heart screening for the Abbey Community College’s hurling and camogie teams which can help save young lives. Well done to them.
