ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Junior Footballers exited this year’s junior Football Championship last Tuesday, going down by three points to Fenor in the quarter-finals at Carrickbeg. Six unanswered points in the closing minutes, saw Fenor over the line and advance to the semi-final.

Fenor got off to a great start with a goal in the opening minutes, after they intercepted a loose ball, and they capitalised on the mistake to put the ball past Jo to the net. Another point from Fenor extended the lead, but the lads began to get some possession, and following a good passing move saw MJ Sutton split the posts with a fine score. Ferrybank were almost in for a goal, when a fine shot from Alex saw it go narrowly wide, but the lads kept up the pressure, with two fine points from Caolan Mac Cathmhaoil reducing the gap. Things got better for the lads, when a breaking ball fell nicely for Ruaidhri McGarrity, and his dipping shot went all the way into the top corner of the net beating the Fenor goalkeeper all ends up. Fenor replied with a point to level it up, but coming up to the half time whistle, a high ball into the Fenor square wasn't dealt properly, and Alex was first to react to the ball, and score from close range. This gave Ferrybank a two-point lead at the break. A fine point off his left from Caolan Mac Cathmhaoil early in the second half extended the lead for the team. Sadly, however that was their last score of the night, as Fenor slowly began to turn the screw, creating chances, but hitting a few wides in return. The lads were beginning to feel the heat, as getting possession was limited. Within the space of four minutes, Fenor had wiped out the Ferrybank lead with three points. With time running down, and extra time on the horizon, Fenor kept coming forward, and created the openings, which saw them score another three points to claim a deserved win on the night. A huge thanks to Tommy Carew for looking after the team throughout the campaign.

TRAINING TOPS:

Our Senior hurlers would like to thank Brian and his staff at Hickeys Bakery for their kind sponsorship of training tops to the Senior hurlers. It’s very much appreciated by all the players.

UNDER 10 CAMOGIE:

Our U10 side welcomed Mooncoin to the field last Saturday morning for a good competitive game. Thankfully the weather held firm, as both teams got down to business on the field. Ferrybank handed debuts to Dani and Layla, and no doubt they will be a great addition to the squad for the seasons ahead. Well done to both teams on the day, serving up some great skill and passion for all the supporters on the day.

OZ SUCCESS:

A huge congratulations to Jono Brown and Sam Lawless who were part of the Western Australia team that won the Australian state final which was played in Melbourne last Saturday morning. The lads who play for Perth Sarsfield got the call up following their brilliant displays with their club, and Saturday’s win has capped off a fantastic year for them. Well done lads, a great achievement.
