ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Pride of play this week goes to the U13 hurlers who defeated a gallant Tramore side in the final of the Well!kids sponsored County Shield Final at the SETU Arena last Tuesday on a scoreline of 5-08 to 4-0. This was a hard-fought game, especially in the second half, when Tramore hit three quick goals, but the lads kept their nerve to close out a well-deserved win in the end.

Ferrybank got off to the ideal start with a goal from Paul, and the lads kept on top of things, but didn’t take their chances, and were almost punished, only for Tyler in goal to make a fine save from close range. A fine point from James extended the lead and things got even better for the Village boys, when a fine worked move between James and Dion saw the ball go to Paul who slotted the ball over the bar. Ferrybank’s defence of Jaic, Matteo, Logan, and Conor were rock solid, giving very little away to the Tramore forwards. Goal number two soon arrived for Ferrybank when a '65 from Logan was flicked into the net by Jamie. Tramore finally breached the Ferrybank goal when they got one back, but just on the stroke of half-time a fine point from Logan ensured a 2-03 to 1-00 lead at the break.

Like the opening half, Ferrybank made a quick start when another '65 from Logan sailed all the way to the net, and goal number four quickly arrived from James with a fine strike to the net giving the Tramore goalie no chance. Crucially, the lads switched off, and Tramore seized the moment in the space of five minutes, where they hit the lads for three quick goals to suddenly reduce the gap to three points. However, credit to the lads, as they kept a cool head, and a few tweaks by the selectors on the pitch began to pay dividends. Another point from James steadied the ship, and with the subs coming on in Oscar, Alex, Darragh, Ben, Mikey, and Sam certainly made a difference as Ferrybank seized control, and that man James hit goal number five with a low strike to the net, and further points from Paul (2) and Oscar ensured that Tramore's brave comeback was all in vain as the final whistle sounded.

There were lots of joyous scenes on the pitch at the end of the game, and fair play to the lads for putting in a huge effort during the campaign, and the hard work has paid off. A huge thanks to Andrew, Fintan, Ricky, Johnny, and Cormac for looking after the lads throughout the year, and special words to all the parents and supporters who came along and cheered the team on the night. Thanks to Tramore for a good sporting game.

TEAM: Tyler, Conor, Jackson, Jaic, Matteo, Logan, Jamie, Dion, Dean, Paul, Fionn, Jake, Ben, Sam, Oscar, Mikey, Alex, Darragh.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Ferrybank's Junior Footballers made the trip to Rathgormack last Saturday, and following a good game, the lads advanced to the quarter finals with a 3-13 to 1-08 win. Three goals early in the opening half paved the way for this win.

An early point from Jay Bagge got the lads on the board, but Rathgormack replied with two of their own. Ruaidhri McGarrity levelled it up almost immediately with a fine point. Next, following a good passing move from the team saw Jay Bagge evade a couple of defenders, passing it to Greg Murphy, who turned his marker, and blasted the ball to the roof of the net from close range. Straight from the kick out, Ferrybank claimed possession and a quick pass to Caolan MacCathmhaoil, who saw the space open up, and he hit a fine drive to the corner of the net, leaving the goalie rooted to the spot. Rathgormack got two points back, but moments later, another fine passing move from the lads saw Shane Oates race through the Rathgormack defence and hit a low shot to the corner of the net for goal number three. The goals kept coming, as Rathormack got one back following a passing move that split the Ferrybank defence, and Pawel Tomczuk in goal had no chance of saving. Ferrybank played some good football, with some nice moves, and this was rewarded with five points on the spin with Ruaidhri McGarrity (2), Caolan MacCathmhaoil (2) and Greg Murphy contributing to the scoreboard, and this left Ferrybank 3-07 to 1-04 ahead at the break.

Two quick scores from Jay Bagge and Shane Oates increased the lead, but fair play to the hosts, as they created a few chances, and it took an excellent save from Pawel Tomczuk to prevent a second goal. Moments later, another goal bound shot had to be turned over by Pawel for a point.  Following that scare, the defence tightened up a lot, with Naoise MacCathmhaoil, John Ahern, Stephen O’Kane, Maciez Tomczuk, Shane Oates, and Lochlann Flanagan giving nothing away. As the game began to peter out, points from the excellent Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Greg Murphy, and Cormac Heffernan closed out a good win.

Overall, this game will improve the lads, with some good passage of play, with 3-12 coming from open play, and no doubt this game should bring them on to next week’s quarter-final match against Fenor on Sunday, September 29th at 2pm in St. Saviours’ GAA grounds.

TEAM: Pawel Tomczuk, Maciez Tomczuk, Naoise MacCathmhaoil, John Ahern, Lochlann Flanagan, Stephen O’Kane, Shane Oates (1-01), Caolan MacCathmhaoil (1-04), Ruaidhri McGarrity (0-03), Robbie Carew, Jay Bagge (0-02), Cormac Heffernan (0-01), Greg Murphy (1-02), Alex, Greg K, Jacob.
