ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

MINOR HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s side were defeated in the semi-finals of the JJ Kavanagh & Sons competition last Tuesday in Fraher Field on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-14 by Lismore. Early goals in both halves proved the difference in this tight contest, where scores from play were at a premium.

Lismore made a quick start to the game with a point, and a minute later, they cut through the Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s defence to score a goal, giving Conor Morrissey in goal no chance with a low shot arrowed to the corner of the net. Conor Haley got the team on the scoreboard with a point. Lismore were edging the opening exchanges, but the team were holding firm and a brace of points from Conor kept the side in the hunt. The combined side were almost in with a goal chance midway through the half, when a shot from Sam was saved by the Lismore goalkeeper, only for the ball to bounce up from his hurley, and it broke out to Evan who's shot hit the underside of the crossbar and the ball was cleared to safety. Two fine long-range points from Harry Flanagan kept the team only three points behind. Another point from wing-back Senan just before the break left Lismore ahead by 1-08 to 0-08.

Similar to the opening half, just a couple of minutes into the second half, a long range Lismore free sailed all the way into the net for a crucial score. However, three unanswered scores from Conor Haley reduced the gap back to two points, but each time the lads got closer to Lismore, they conceded soft frees, which were duly punished. A fine passing move involving a few players saw Josh burst through and put the ball over the bar, hoping it might rally the side. However, the Lismore defence gave nothing away, and the goal Ferrybank / St Saviour’s badly needed never came. As time began to run down, Lismore punished the team with three converted frees to close out the win.

A disappointing night at Fraher Field, as the team just never got going, and conceding early goals in each half proved the difference. Thanks to all who came along and supported the side.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / Erin’s Own team were defeated by a strong St. Oliver’s side last Thursday in Poleberry. Key goals were crucial in the game, and the men from the west got them to ensure a place in the knockouts stages.

COUNTY DUTY:

It was a busy weekend for a number of our players and coaches, representing the county. Well done to Mark Flanagan who was part of the Waterford Under 15 development squad in action in the Arrabawn tournament in Tipperary. Congratulations to Paul Martin (Coach) who was involved with the Waterford U16 team that won the Michael Foley Wexford Cup tournament.

Well done to Ciara Haley and Eve Hennessy who were with the Waterford U15 Camogie team in the national blitz in Cahir, where they defeated Offaly in their opening game, went down to Tipperary in game number 2, and lost out to Dublin after extra-time in their final game.

It’s great to see so many young players from the club representing the County at all levels, and credit to the Coaches for all the good hard work they are putting in.

UNDER 12 HURLING:

Our U12 Hurlers played Ballygunner last Friday, for what turned out to be a good competitive game, which was enjoyed by everyone on view. Both sides showed great tenacity throughout, with plenty of hooking and blocking, striking, catching the order of the day. Well done to all, and it’s a trip to play De La Salle this coming Friday, August 30th at 6:30pm.

UNDER 10 HURLING:

The U10 hurlers had a good workout last Saturday morning, where they welcomed Na Gael over for a challenge game. It was a good morning for the game, as both sides competed for everything on the field. Thanks to Na Gael for coming over.

UNDER 7 HURLING:

Our U7 Hurlers welcomed Roanmore to the GAA grounds last Saturday, for a couple of well contested challenge games. Despite being down a couple of players for the matches, the players put in another top performance on the field, with a good work ethic against solid opponents. Well done to all concerned and thanks to Roanmore for coming over for the matches.

UNDER 11 FOOTBALL:

Our U11 Footballers are in action this coming Tuesday, August 27th with St. Saviour’s and St. Mary’s coming over for a blitz. Throw in time is 6:30pm, and all are welcome to come down and show your support.

LOST & FOUND:

A large amount of clothing, which includes some very new Cúl Camp gear, has been found at the club grounds following recent summer camps and training sessions. This is now stored in the equipment room. Please contact any of the coaches, committee members, or Coffee by King to claim any of the items. If left unclaimed, items will be donated to charity.

DÉISE DRAW:

We had no luck in the third Déise Draw of the year, which took place last Friday afternoon. Once again, we would like to thank everyone who has purchased a ticket for the year. Hopefully, we can get a winner or two in the next draw, which takes place on Friday, September 20th.

WELL!KIDS:

The Well!Kids programme continues this coming Saturday morning from 10am to 11am. This is open to boys and girls aged between 4-7. It’s free to attend, where equipment can be provided if needs be. The emphasis is based on fun, and learning our game in a fun, but safe environment.
