ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:

Ferrybank’s Senior hurling campaign for 2024 ended in Walsh Park last Friday, where they were defeated in the quarter-finals by Mount Sion on a scoreline of 0-21 to 0-15. The team gave it their all on the night, but a more experienced Mount Sion ensured they had enough to get over the line, and clinch a semi-final place.

It was Mount Sion who made the better start in the opening ten minutes, racing into a 0-05 to 0-01 lead, with Mark O' Brien pointing for Ferrybank. However, the lads settled down and two further points from Mark O’Brien, narrowed the gap. Ferrybank began to create a couple of scoring chances, but failed to convert, and Mount Sion were a bit more efficient when it came to scoring chances by slotting over another two points.

Ferrybank’s defence coped well in the opening half, limiting the Mount Sion forwards to any clear goal scoring chances. From a long ball down the centre, Mark O’ Brien was first to react to it, and raced through on goal, only to be hauled down outside the 20 metre line where a free was awarded, and he duly converted for a point. Ferrybank began to grow into the game, long-range scores from Naoise MacCathmhaoil and Caolan MacCathmhaoil reduced the gap, and another from Mark levelled it up. Both sides exchanged further points, and with half-time approaching, Ferrybank were going well, but in the closing two minutes of the half, Mount Sion hit three quick points to open an 0-11 to 0-8 lead.

No doubt, the turning point of the game was the opening ten minutes of the second half, as Mount Sion moved up a gear, and hit seven of the eight points scored to lead by double scores. Despite being down a man, Ferrybank kept battling away and hit four unanswered points through Mark O’ Brien (2) and Robbie Carew (2). Needing a goal to keep them in the hunt, Ruaidhri McGarrity almost got in for one, only for some last ditch defending by the Mount Sion defence. Ruadhri did get his name on the score sheet with a fine point to narrow the gap to four, but two points deep into injury time for Mount Sion saw them close out the win.

As stated earlier, the lads gave it their all on the night and performed with credit, especially the defence, who gave nothing to the Mount Sion forwards on the night, but the experience of Mount Sion got them through. No doubt, the lads will have learned a lot during their first season in Senior hurling, and performed with great credit, maintaining their Senior status for 2025 is a big bonus, with so many young players in the team, and a few more to join next year.

A special word of thanks to Paddy, Stan, Fintan, Doxer, Millie, Tom, and Aisling for preparing this team’s first year at Senior level, they put in a huge effort since the start of the year, and deserve huge credit as well. Thanks to all the supporters who travelled around the City and County, and even outside the County to follow and support the team.

MINOR HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s side are in semi-final action this coming Tuesday, August 20th at 8pm where they play Lismore with an 8pm start. A stiff test awaits the side, but the team have performed well in the league stages, getting some crucial wins along the way.

In the previous encounter itself, the men from the west prevailed in a close fought game, with goals being the difference, so hopefully the team will be well ready to go on the night. Support will be crucial, and we would encourage everyone to come to Fraher Field and cheer on the team. Best of luck lads.

Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
