ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

SENIOR HURLING:

After forty plus years waiting, Ferrybank’s senior hurlers made their re-appearance last Saturday afternoon in Walsh Park in their opening game in this year’s Senior Hurling Championship against Abbeyside. Following an honest effort, it was Abbeyside who prevailed on a scoreline of 3-22 to 2-13. No doubt, plenty of nerves operated throughout the game, but the lads kept fighting all the way to the end, and it was a great learning curve back up in the Senior ranks.

Darryl Griffin got the opening point for the team with a nice score, but Abbeyside were a touch quicker with movement and passing, and put over three unanswered points to extend their lead, but Mark O' Brien got a point back, which almost ended up as a goal, with the goalkeeper out of position, the ball just sailed over the bar. Abbeyside got their opening goal midway through the half when a mistake in the defence saw them capitalise on the error and the ball was driven into the net. However, moments later, Ferrybank replied with a goal from Mark O’Beiwn, when he was first to react to a breaking ball, took a couple of steps, and drilled the ball to the corner of the net. That goal gave the team confidence, and with points from Ruaidhri McGarrity and Mark O’ Brien kept them in touch. Despite being under pressure in the opening half, the Ferrybank defence did their best to hold firm and just on the half time whistle, a second Abbeyside goal arrived leaving it 2-15 to 1-05 at the break.

Quick points at the start of the second-half from Neil O’Sullivan from the sideline and from Mark O’Brien got the team off to a good start. Credit to the lads, as they held their opponents scoreless for 10 minutes, and they missed a few scores themselves, with Mark O’Brien and Ruaidhri McGarrity working hard up front. A second goal for Ferrybank arrived, when Izaak Richards picked up the ball, and his long shot deceived the Abbeyside goalie and went into the net. Points from Neil O’Sullivan and Robbie Carew kept the scoreboard ticking over. Despite being defeated, the lads will have learnt a lot from the game. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team. Next up is Fourmilewater on Saturday, August 3rd 6pm in St. Molleran’s GAA Grounds.

Scorers: Mark O’Brien (1-08), Izaak Richards (1-00), Neil O’Sullivan (0-02), Ruaidhri McGarrity (0-01), Robbie Carew (0-01), Darryl Griffin (0-01).

JUNIOR HURLING:

The Junior Hurlers recorded a second win last Thursday, defeating Butlerstown on a scoreline of 2-19 to 2-16 on a damp misty night.  First half goals from Jay Bagge and John Collins saw the lads lead 2-08 to 1-05 at the break.

Butlerstown came more into it in the second-half and made a real fight of it. However, points from Eoin O’Neill, Eimhin Burns, Shane O’Sullivan and Jay Bagge saw the team home. The team have now completed their three games, and are now waiting on their quarter-final opponents from the other group. We would like to wish Macieck Tomczuk a speedy recovery from an injury picked up in the game.

MINOR HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s side maintained their unbeaten run in this year’s Minor Hurling Championship with a 4-15 to 2-09 win over St. Mary’s, which was played in Kilmacthomas last Wednesday.

A fine opening quarter from the team, in which they hit 2-06 without reply, was key to the win. An opening score from Fionn McGarrity got the scoreboard going. Moments later, Fionn capitalised on the goalkeeper’s mistake to drill the ball to the net. Four more quick points arrived through Conor Haley (0-03) and Fionn, before a second goal from Reece via a pass from Fionn put the team in control. St Marys, finally got on the board with a couple of pointed frees, and Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s conceded another few frees, which kept St. Mary’s in the hunt and at half-time it read 2-09 to 0-07.

St. Mary’s made a quick start to the second-half with 1-02 to reduce the gap to a goal, but the combined side got a third goal when a long ball into the St. Mary’s defence was touched home by Reece for his second on the night. Despite both sides having a goal each ruled out, Conor Haley got number four when his shot deceived the St. Mary’s goalie and flew into the net. Credit to the home team, as they kept battling away, with Tommy in goal pulling off a crucial save in the goal at a vital stage, and some  solid defending from the excellent Jamie, assisted by Tadhg, and Adam kept them at bay, and points from Jacob, Fionn, and Conor sealed a good win for the team.

Next up is a home game which will take place in Ferrybank on Wednesday, July 24th against St. Patrick’s at 7:30pm. Scores Conor Haley (1-09), Fionn McGarrity (1-05), Reece (2-0), Jacob Richards (0-01),

UNDER 15 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / Erin’s Own side edged out Portlaw last Monday at a rainy Poleberry on a scoreline of 2-15 to 5-05. A late burst of 1-04 from the team saw them claim a vital two points in a good match. Next up is a home game against Stradbally on Monday July 29th.

UNDER 14 CAMOGIE:

Well done to the U14 Camogie on a good win over Ballyduff Upper last Thursday, and are now into the semi-finals. Despite the damp conditions, both sides fought to the end, but the girls in green just had enough to get over the line. Also, thanks to St. Paul’s GAA Club for the use of the pitch on the night.

COUNTY DUTY:

Well done to Under 15 Camogie players Ciara Haley and Eve Hennessy who played for the Waterford U15 development squad in Mallow last Saturday. The team played all the Munster counties, before defeating Limerick in the final. Well done to all on the day.

UNDER 7 FOOTBALL:

Our U7 footballers made the trip to St. Saviour’s GAA grounds last Wednesday for a mini blitz which involved Butlerstown as well. A good solid effort was put in, with the boys adapting well to the big ball, and certainly knowing where the goal is. Well done to all and thanks to St. Saviour’s for hosting the games.

UNDER 9 HURLING:

Our U9s took part in a blitz on Saturday morning with some great games against Mount Sion. Despite the damp weather, the lads put on a great display. Well done lads.
