SENIOR HURLING:
All roads lead to Walsh Park this coming Saturday, July 20th where Ferrybank Senior Hurlers begin their Championship campaign for the first time in over 40 years with Abbeyside providing the opposition for a 5pm throw-in.
Following on from the Premier Intermediate hurling success last year, the lads are now in the big league, where, no doubt, the going will be tough. We would ask everyone to come out and show your support for the team, who over the last number of months, have left no stone unturned in preparing for the Championship. We wish Paddy, Stan, Fintan, and the team the very best of luck over the next number of weeks.
JUNIOR HURLING:
Our Junior hurlers were defeated by Mount Sion last Thursday night, in their second game in this year’s championship on a scoreline of 4-05 to 0-9.
Despite being short a number of players for the match, the team put in an honest effort, and only for a number of bad wides, the lads could have got something out of the game. Greg Murphy got the team’s opening score on the night, but Mount Sion hit the Ferrybank defence with an unanswered 2-02.
Points from John Collins and Jay Bagge reduced the gap, and despite having a good bit of possession, the team hit a number of wides. In addition, Mount Sion duly punished them with a third goal to extend the lead. However, three points from Jay Bagge (2) and John Collins reduced the gap to 3-03 to 0-06 at the break.
An early point from Cody kept the team in it, but Mount Sion broke up a promising Ferrybank attack, and the ball was swiftly moved forward, where a low shot ended up in the net, giving Kyle Daly in goal no chance. Ferrybank had a goal chance of their own, when Cian Martin broke through, only to see his low shot hit the post and the ball was cleared to safety. That was the closest they got in getting a goal, and despite points from Eibhin Burns and Sparky, time went against them.
Despite this defeat, the lads had a good few scoring chances they didn’t take, and Mount Sion punished them with goals at key stages, but credit to them, as they played all the way to the end.
Next up is a home match this coming Thursday night July 18th at 7:30pm with Butlerstown providing the opposition.
TEAM: Kyle Daly, Luke Butler, Shane O’ Sullivan, Pawel Tomczuk, Eibhin Burns (0-01), Eoin O’ Neill (0-01), Maciez Tomczuk, Cody Griffin, Jack Keogh, Jay Bagge (0-03), Greg Murphy (0-01), John Collins (0-02), Dean Clarke, Marty Freeman, Cian Martin, Reece Phelan, Nathan Lawlor.
MINOR HURLING:
The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviours combined side played out an exciting draw against Passage last Wednesday in their second game in this year’s championship, with the scoreline of 4-15 to 3-18. This was the second successive draw for the combined team who came from eight points down at half time to salvage the draw.
Passage dominated the opening half, quickly out of the blocks, and they hit 1-02 in the opening three minutes. The combined side badly needed a score, and quickly replied with a goal from Jacob Richards after he received a pass from Sam and he raced through the Passage defence to score a fine goal. However, Passage took charge, causing all sorts of problems to the Ferrybank / St. Saviour's defence, and they hit six of the next seven points to confirm their dominance. Three unanswered points from Conor Haley (2), and Josh reduced the gap. However, moments later, a second Passage goal came where once again the defence was carved open for the forward to drill the ball to the net passed a hapless Tom M in the goal. Both sides exchanged points, just before the break with Fionn McGarrity and Conor Haley scoring to leave it 2-11 at 1-07.
No doubt, a few harsh words were said at the break, as Ferrybank / St. Saviours came out all guns blazing, hitting 2-02 in a five minute spell, with Foinn scoring the goals; firstly, receiving a pass from Jacob Richards, and planting the ball to the net, and with the low sun causing havoc in Passage eyes, Fionn McGarrity picked up a loose ball, and placed a low shot into the net.
With the home team getting on top, Conor Haley got goal number four, evading a couple of challenges, and another low shot into the net. Three more points from Conor Haley put the home side seven points in front. However, Passage woke up and responded with a quick 1-02 to slowly reduce the gap. A badly needed point from Darragh M eased the nerves, but Passage kept chipping away. Entering the closing minutes, they hit three points to put them back into the lead. With tensions running high, both on and off the field, one last chance saw Conor Haley level up the game with a last gasp point. No doubt, the lads would have settled for a point, considering the position they were in, but they tightened up considerably, and put in a great second half performance to secure a share of the spoils.
Next up is a trip to Kill to play St. Mary’s, this coming Wednesday, July 17th with a 7:30pm.
TEAM: Tom M, Lee K, Adam H, Tadhg, Senan W, Harry, Jamie S, Mark F, Josh J (0-01), Evan, Conor H (1-12), Sam R, Jacob R (1-00), Finn (2-01), Max, Darragh M (0-01), Conor M, Alex S.

UNDER 7 HURLING:
Our U7 hurlers were in blitz action last Thursday, making the trip to play Butlerstown and Portlaw. The lads played four good competitive matches, against strong opponents, but on the night, they gave excellent displays, showing good work rate throughout. Well done to all and thanks to Butlerstown for the invite and for the ice-pops for all the players to cool down on a warm night.
COUNTY CAMOGIE DUTY:
Well done to Zara, Karimat, and Belle who were on the Waterford Camogie U14 team who played in the Shauna McGrath tournament last Saturday afternoon in St. Saviours’ GAA grounds.
