ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior hurlers recorded a great win over Clonea in their opening game in this year’s Eastern Championship, edging a tight game on a scoreline of 1-15 to 3-07.

Early scores from Shane O’ Sullivan and Caolan MacCathmhaoil got the team off to a good start, before Clonea replied with three points. The team settled well, and hit a purple patch of points through Caolan MacCathmhaoil (3), Eoin O’ Neill (3), and the hard working Shane O’ Sullivan, ensuring they went into the half time lead of 0-09 to 0-05.

Clonea scored an early goal at the start of the second half, but a quick response from Ferrybank saw Martin Freeman whip on the ball first time, and drilled the ball to the corner of the net, giving the goalie no chance. A fine score from Eibhin Burns from a tight angle extended the lead out to four. However, a mistake in the Ferrybank defence saw Clonea go in for a second goal. Clonea began to get on top, with the defence working hard to repel any attacks, with Graham Coady and Tommy Carew working hard. Two points from Caolan MacCathmhaoil pushed the lead out to four, but in the closing minutes, Clonea were awarded a penalty, which was duly dispatched to bring it back to a point. Another point from Clonea levelled it up, but credit to the team, as they dug deep and created two more chances, where Caolan MacCathmhaoil once again stood up and pointed to see the team claim the spoils.

A good win for the team, especially missing a few players, and next up is a trip to play Mount Sion on Thursday, July 11th at 7:30pm. Scores Caolan MacCathmhaoil 0-07, Eoin O’ Neill 0-04, Shane O’Sullivan 0-03, Martin Freeman 1-00, Eibhin Burns 0-01.

MINOR HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s team played their opening game of this year’s Division 2 Championship last Wednesday night away to Clonea. Following a titanic battle, the teams couldn’t be separated at the final whistle.

Clonea, aided with the breeze in the opening half, led 1-05 to 0-01, but the lads held in there, and goals from Conor Haley and Fionn McGarrity reduced the gap to four points at the break. A third goal from Conor Haley from a sideline in the second half seemed to have gotten the team over the line, but two late points from Clonea saw the game end all square on a scoreline of 3-09 to 1-15.

Conor Haley with 2-08 (1-03 from play) and Fionn McGarrity (1-01) were the scorers on the night. Next up is a game on Wednesday, July 10th against Passage at 7:30pm in Ferrybank.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / Erin’s Own combined team shared the spoils in their second game last Monday in Clonea on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-17. Next up is Portlaw on Monday, July 15th.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Our U13 hurlers hosted St. Oliver’s on Saturday morning in the GAA grounds. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, as the men from the west ran out worthy winners on the day. The lads worked hard on the day, taking in some nice scores, but crucial goals at key stages was the difference.

Next up for the team is a trip to play Abbeyside on Saturday morning with a 11:30am throw-in.

UNDER 11 FOOTBALL:

Our U11 footballers made the trip to Portlaw last Monday to play the hosts and Butlerstown. All matches were keenly contested, and the team performed very well. Thanks to Portlaw for hosting.

UNDER 10 FOOTBALL:

It was a trip to Ballyduff lower last Tuesday, where a good competitive match took place, with not a lot to separate the sides throughout the game. The team is making nice progress as the season goes on.

CAMOGIE:

It was a trip to Dunhill on Saturday morning for the U8 and U10 team for a blitz which was hosted by St Anne’s. Among Ferrybank’s opponents were St. Molleran’s, Ballyduff Lower, Abbeyside, and Clonea. With five new debutants in the team, the girls got down to business, with great workrate, energy, playing together as a team, which really pleased the coaches. Slowly, but surely, all the hard work is starting to pay dividends.

Thanks to all the parents for helping out on the day, and to St Anne’s for being excellent hosts.

UNDER 8 TEAM: Ada, Rosie, Shiloh, Farrah, Alice, Summer, Daisy, Ava, Emme, Aria, Lucy, Aine, Ella, Katie, Ciara, Millie, Evie, Annie, Aoibhin, Bella.

UNDER 12 CAMOGIE:

Our U12 Camogie side welcomed Ballyduff Lower to the GAA Grounds last Thursday for a good competitive game. Despite a chilly evening, both sides warmed up the crowd, displaying some excellent skills and scores being taken. Well done to both sides.

CAMOGIE FUNDRAISER:

The Camogie club is holding a fundraiser that will coincide with next Sunday’s Euro Soccer final. With the semi-finals taking place this coming Tuesday and Wednesday night, where the finalist will be known, the Camogie club will hold a Golden Goal for the final.

It will cost €5 for a number, and whatever the time the first goal is scored, you can win a nice €100. There will be 0-90, and ticket(s) can be obtained from Karen 087-6691523, Niall 087-6455521, David 087-9018957, or down in the field Tuesday and Thursday 6-7pm, or Saturday morning 10am-12. We would ask everyone to support this fundraiser, and best of luck to all.

COUNTY DUTY:

Hard luck to Iona Heffernan and the Waterford Senior Camogie team on their quarterfinal defeat by Galway in Croke Park last Sunday afternoon.

Well done also to Ciara Haley who was part of the Waterford U15 Camogie side that made the trip to Cappamore, Co. Limerick last Saturday.

WEDDING BELLS:

Congratulations to Ferrybank Camogie player Siobhan Heffernan who tied the knot to Mitchell Casey in Ferrybank last Friday afternoon. We wish both a wonderful, healthy and happy life together.

WELL!KIDS PROGRAMME:

The Well!Kids programme continues this coming Saturday morning from 10am to 11am. This is open to boys and girls aged between 4-7. It’s free to attend, where equipment can be provided if needs be. The emphasis is based on fun, and learning our game in a fun, but safe environment.

PEADAR’S SUMMER CAMP:

Not too long to go for the annual Peadar’s Summer camp which will take place on Monday, July 15th to Friday, July 19th from 10am to 2:30pm. Ireland’s oldest summer camp is now into its 31st year, and it’s a huge testament to the Ahearne family for keeping it going year in, year out.

The Summer camp welcomes boys and girls aged between 5-14 years of age, and they will learn the skills of our national game, in a fun and safe environment. Application forms can be obtained from any committee member, Coffee By King (GAA grounds) or from the Spar shop in Ferrybank.

On Friday, July 12th, the Summer camp will hold a fundraising night in the Mandarin Bar & Restaurant, with live music and plenty of spot prizes available. Tickets cost €2, and we would ask everyone to support this worthy cause, as the money raised goes towards the cost of running the camp.

DÉISE DRAW:

The Déise Draw will commence again this year starting on July 12th, with the first draw being broadcast live on WLR. Similar to last year, there will be six draws between July and November, with the 1st prize a nice €10k, 2nd prize €3k, 3rd prize €2k, all the way down to number 16. The last date to enter the draw is Wednesday, July 10th.

Over €126k in prize money will be distributed in the Déise Draw, and as usual, there will be bonus prizes and holiday vouchers along the way.

The Déise Draw has been a vital source of income for Ferrybank GAA club over the last number of years, as 70% of the income is retained by the club itself, which goes towards the day-to-day running of the club’s expenditure.

Tickets for the six draws cost €100, and once again, we ask everyone associated with the club to show your support and purchase a Déise Draw ticket, which can be obtained by contacting Nicky Heffernan 087-6724212, or any committee member.

Living abroad? You can still enter the Déise Draw if you’re living away from home. Simply click on this link and nominate Ferrybank GAA club.
