ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE:

Our Senior hurlers were narrowly defeated by Dungarvan in the All-County Hurling League last Saturday on a scoreline of 4-16 to 3-16. Three late points in added time secured the win for the Old Boro side, while no doubt, Ferrybank will be kicking themselves from conceding some soft goals.

One of those soft goals arrived in the opening minutes, when an attempted handpass went straight into the Dungarvan player’s hand, and he placed the sliothar into the net from close range. Points from MJ Sutton and Cormac Heffernan reduced the gap. However, moments later, Ferrybank were soon level, when a fine passing move saw a handpass from MJ Sutton given to Robbie Carew, who at the second attempt scored a fine goal. Both sides were guilty of a number of bad wides in the opening half, and there was little to separate them as points were exchanged with Mark O’ Brien (4), and Shane Oates (2) saw Ferrybank edge it at the break by 1-09 to 1-08.

Ferrybank made a great start to the second half when a fine ‘one-  two’ between Ruaidhri McGarrity and Mark O’ Brien saw the latter crash the ball to the corner of the net. Moments later, things further improved when a third goal arrived, when another fine passing move, involving Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Mark O’ Brien and Robbie Carew, saw Luke Flynn receiving the ball and he made no mistake from close range. Further points from Ruaidhri McGarrity, Caolan MacCathmhaoil, and Mark O’ Brien opened up a seven-point lead. However, from there, Dungarvan got on top, replying with a goal straight away, capitalising on some defensive overplay, and a third goal soon arrived from a close-in free. Dungarvan kept up the pressure, and a fourth goal soon arrived to quickly open a four-point lead. To give credit, Ferrybank battled back, and four unanswered points from Mark O’ Brien levelled it up, as the game went into injury time, but a Dungarvan puckout was caught in the centre of the field, and the player ran through to put it over to regain the lead. Two quick points followed, and that finished the scoring on the night.

SCORERS: Mark O’ Brien (1-10), Robbie Carew (1-00), Luke Flynn (1-00), Shane Oates (0-02), MJ Sutton (0-01), Ruaihdri McGarrity (0-01), Cormac Heffernan (0-01), Caolan MacCathmhaoil (0-01).

UNDER 6 HURLING:

Well done to our U6 hurlers who had their first taste of match action on Friday evening with some entertaining games against our friends from Roanmore. The sun was out and the boys did fantastic with no doubt some very proud parents.

Thanks to Roanmore for making the trip over and we look forward to the return leg in a few weeks.

COUNTY DUTY:

Best of luck to Iona Heffernan and the Waterford Senior Camogie team that play Cork in the Munster Senior final this coming Sunday, May 19th in Semple Stadium, Thurles at 2pm.

While well done to Sean Adeyemi, Conor Haley, and Harry Flanagan who were involved with the Waterford Celtic Challenge team, which also included Paul Martin on the management team, that defeated Clare in the quarter-finals last Saturday afternoon in Ennis.

UNDER 13 CAMOGIE:

Ferrybank’s U13 Camogie side made the short trip to Slieverue last Saturday morning to take part in the first-annual Mary Rockett Memorial Tournament, along with Glenmore and Lisdowney. Played in glorious weather, the girls got down to business recording close fought wins over Lisdowney and Glenmore, but were defeated by the hosts in their last game. However, Ferrybank were crowned the winners on scoring difference, which saw Captain Sophie collect the winning trophy for the team.

A great morning was had by all, with a large attendance watching the games, and a special words of thanks to Slieverue GAA Club and the Rockett family for the invite, and to all the volunteers  who had a fine spread of food for everyone on the day. Also on the day, the Under 8 and Under 10 teams played their neighbours in a couple of challenge games, which saw 31 players reporting for duty and credit to the players, as they put on a great display of camogie for all to enjoy, which also saw Annabelle making her debut for the Under 8 team. Well done all, and keep up the good work.
