It was heartbreak for the Minor Hurlers as they were defeated by Ballyduff Upper in the Division 3 County Final last Thursday on a scoreline of 0-20 to 3-09.
The team were always chasing the game, after a slow start in which Ballyduff Upper aided with the breeze hit the opening five points. Despite missing a few scoring chances, Fionn McGarrity got the team on the board with the opening point, and, a couple of minutes later, Fionn got the opening goal, when his shot went high into the corner of the net, to put Ferrybank right back into it. Ballyduff Upper were causing problems going forward, and Kyle Daly in goal pulled off two point blank saves to keep the team in it. Three further points from Ballyduff extended the lead, but a point from Conor Haley kept the lads in touch, and went into the break only trailing by three points.
Again, like the opening half, Ballyduff hit the opening two points, before Jay Bagge replied with a fine score. Ballyduff were using the ball wisely, finding a man in key areas, and were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over, with three points on the spin. The lads needed a lift, and points from Shane Purcell, Lochlann Flanagan and Conor Haley reduced the gap. However, Ballyduff ensured that they got points to keep them ahead, another great save from Kyle Daly from close range prevented a certain goal, which would have finished the game. With the team needing a goal, they got one when a fine run from Jay Bagge who passed to Conor Haley, and from close range drilled the ball to the net for a badly needed green flag. Successive points from Fionn McGarrity and Conor Haley got the team back to two, but credit to Ballyduff Upper as they held their nerve and picked off three unanswered scores to extend the lead out to five entering the closing minutes.
A third goal for Ferrybank arrived when a long ball in was picked up by Conor Haley who evaded his marker and drilled a low shot to the corner of the net. This was followed by a point from Caloan MacCathmhaoil. With the last play of the game, a free from Conor Haley was cleared off the line, and the ball was moved away to safety and that was that. It was tough on the team that only lost one game throughout the camp again, and unfortunately it was in the final. They just never got going at any stage, but kept plugging away, and almost snatched victory on the night, but crucially Ballyduff Upper picked off their scores where it mattered. The team has given the club a huge lift and played some great hurling on a Wednesday night, and this was reflected with the huge support they had. Fair play to Ballyduff Upper, on the night, they were deserving winners. Thanks to the management team of John Haley, Davey Atkins, Brian Richard, Marty Freeman and Niall Mackey for all the hard work and effort they put in throughout the campaign.
TEAM: Kyle Daly, Sean Adeyeni, Paddy Mackey, Conor Daly, Caolan MacCathmhaoil (0-01), Adam Aspel, Izaak Richards, Lochlann Flanagan (0-01), Jay Bagge (0-01), Harry Flanagan, Fionn McGarrity (1-02), Shane Purcell (0-01), Conor Haley (2-3), Callum O’ Sullivan, Dean Clarke, Jacob Richards.
INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:
The Intermediate Camogie side were defeated by a stronger Brickey Rangers last Friday. A very even first half with little to separate the sides, but Brickeys pulled away in the second half to claim the points.
The opening half was well contested, with Ferrybank holding their own, and points from Niamh Ahearne (2) and Valerie O’ Brien (2) had the girls two points ahead. Brickeys came back into it, with five unanswered points, and just before the break, Valerie O’ Brien hit her third point and Ferrybank's fifth to leave them trailing by just a point at the break.
An early point from Niamh Ahearne levelled the game up, but in the space of a few minutes, Brickeys went on a scoring blitz, hitting 2-03 without reply to open up a nine point lead. Tried as they did, the girls were finding it tough to breach the Brickeys’ defence, while their forwards were given Ferrybank’s defence problems with their speed and movement, resulting in a third goal. Despite points from Niamh Ahearne and Chloe, Brickyes closed up their defence to run out comfortable winners in the end. A good effort from the team, but on the night they were defeated by a good Brickey Rangers team.
