INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our Intermediate hurlers were defeated by a superior Ballygunner side in the semi-final of the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs Eastern Championship sponsored competition last Saturday evening in Ballybeg on a scoreline of 5-28 to 1-20.
The team gave it their all over the course of the sixty minutes, but Ballygunner’s fire power proved too much on the day. Ballygunner opened the scoring with two quick points, before Shane O’ Sullivan got a white flag raised with a fine score. Moments later, Ballygunner got their opening goal where some quick passing saw the sliothar drilled to the back of the net. Points from Mark O’ Brien (2) and Robbie Carew kept the lads in the game. However, in the space of five minutes, Ballygunner hit 1-03 without reply, which included a second goal, despite a fine save from Johno Brown; the ball came back out and put into the Ferrybank net to open a 2-07 to 0-04 lead. It was tough going for the team, as the Ballygunner defence were not giving anything away and were closing down any attacks on their goal. Points from Mark O’ Brien (2) and Robbie Carew kept the scoreboard ticking over, but Ballygunner hit four answered points to open a 2-16 to 0-09 lead at the break.
Any hope of a comeback in the second-half were well and truly dashed when a third goal for Ballygunner arrived two minutes into the second-half. Further scores came from Shane Oates, MJ Sutton, Cormac Heffernan and Mark O’ Brien(4). The lads kept battling away, and got rewarded with a goal when Ryan Tierney was first to react to a loose ball around the square to put the sliothar to the net for a deserved goal. Ballygunner finished out the scoring with five unanswered points to book their place in next week’s final.
It was a tough day for the team, but nobody could fault their effort and commitment all year, and scoring 1-20 in a semi-final of a championship match would more often than not be enough to get you into a final, but not to be on this occasion. A huge thanks to John, Jamie, Nicky, Marty and Shane, for all the effort they put into the team over the last six months. They left no stone unturned week in week out to prepare the team, and the panel rowed in with them by putting in a huge effort as well. Thanks also to Sparky, Tom, Tony Power and Maxi McCabe for the first aid, Andy O’ Brien as kit man, and also to the supporters who came along to support the team, whether it was a challenge, or championship game.
Lastly, thanks to St. Saviour's for having the facility in great condition for the game.
TEAM: Johno Brown, Ben Fitzpatrick, Naoise MacCathmhaoil, Graham Coady, MJ Sutton (0-01), Shane O’ Sullivan (0-01), Davey Atkins, Cormac Heffernan (0-01), Seamus Burtchaell, Ruaidhrí McGarrity, Mark O’ Brien (0-12), Luke Flynn, Ryan Tierney (1-00), Neil O’ Sullivan (0-01), Robbie Carew (0-02), Sam Lawless (0-01), Shane Oates (0-01), Damien Ahern, Tommy Carew, Kevin Hurley, Greg Murphy, Cian Martin, Alex Kinsella, Paul Carew, Tom Burtchaell, John Ahern.
JUNIOR HURLING:
The Junior hurlers bowed out of this year’s championship when they were defeated by Tramore in the semi-final played in Dunhill on Sunday evening on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-15.
This was a tight affair, and even though Tramore held a 0-9 to 0-7 lead at the break, Ferrybank brought it back to a point midway through the second-half. However, a crucial goal for Tramore proved the difference after a mix up in the Ferrybank defence. Despite having a couple of scoring chances that went a begging, Tramore held out to qualify for the final.
Hard luck to the team, thanks to Robbie, and Graham for looking after the team.
MINOR HURLING:
All roads lead to Fraher Field this coming Thursday, September 1st, where our Minor Hurlers contest the Division 3 Championship Final against Ballyduff Upper at 7pm. To date, the team has gone through the league stages undefeated, and have put in a huge effort throughout the campaign.
Ballyduff Upper will bring a significant challenge, and therefore we would ask everyone associated with the club to come along and show your support on the night. Best of luck to John, Brian, Davey, Niall, Marty, and indeed the team.
UNDER 15 HURLING:
The combined Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s combined team recorded a comfortable win over a gallant Naomh Bríd side last Monday winning on a scoreline of 2-23 to 1-06.
Early points from Conor Haley, Jacob Richards, and Josh got the team off to a good start. The opening goal arrived midway through the opening half when a pass from Jacob sent Fionn MCGarrity through to place the ball to the net. The Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s team showed some good team play, looking up to find a man, and getting some good points through Conor Haley (0-04), Fionn McGarrity and Josh from Centre back. Fionn got his second and the team’s second goal midway through the second-half with a low drive into the corner after taking a pass from Roy. From there on, the bench was emptied as the side ran out easy winners.
The combined side play their next game tonight (Monday, August 29th) in Ferrybank at 6:45pm against Ballygunner B.
CAMOGIE:
Our Intermediate Camogie team suffered a frustrating trip to Tallow last Saturday evening, when no referee turned up, with both sides ready to go on the field. No date has been fixed for this game to take place.
UNDER 8 and 10 CAMOGIE:
Our Under 8 and 10 Camogie teams hosted a blitz on Sunday morning, and welcomed Tramore and St. Anne’s to the club grounds.
On a perfect morning for action, all matches were very competitive, with all teams giving everything on the field. A huge credit to the girls as they gave an excellent display, showing plenty of skills throughout the matches. Special word to Saoirse Jacob who was the Player of the Tournament, showing real leadership on the field, and no doubt is one for the future. Thanks to young referees Sophie, Fionn and Connor for helping out on the day. Thanks also to all the organisers and volunteers who ensured everything ran smoothly, and a great day was had by all.
