INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our Intermediate hurlers qualified for the semi-finals of the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs Eastern Championship with a thrilling extra-time win over a gallant Erin’s Own side, winning on a scoreline of 3-23 to 1-22. It did not look good for the team as they trailed by four points entering injury time, but a point from a '65, and a last gasp goal from a scramble following a 20-metre free saw Ferrybank snatch a draw, and the lads then pulled away in extra-time to secure the win.
Playing against the breeze in the opening half, both sides exchanged the opening six points, with Neil O’ Sullivan (2) and Mark O' Brien scoring for Ferrybank. In the opening exchanges, two goals chances went a begging. A brilliant sideline point from Mark O’ Brien edged Ferrybank ahead. However, Erin’s Own began to get on top, and went on a scoring spree hitting 1-08 without reply, to go into a ten-point lead. The game got very scrappy in places, with a few unsavoury incidents, and the game was held up on a number of occasions, which clearly didn’t help Ferrybank’s play. When play finally got going, Ferrybank got three badly needed points on the spin, just before the break through Robbie Carew, MJ Sutton, and Mark O’ Brien to leave it 1-11 to 0-07 at the break.
A quick start was needed at the start of the second-half, and a Neil O’ Sullivan pass wasn’t dealt with by the Erin’s Own defence, and Robbie Carew was on hand from close range to put the ball to the back of the net. Soft frees conceded kept Erin’s Own ahead as points from Luke Flynn, John Ahern and Mark O’ Brien reduced the gap. With the game entering its final stages, two points from MJ Sutton got the gap back to four points. Entering injury time, a '65 from Mark O’ Brien brought the deficit back to three. One last attack saw MJ Sutton bundled to the ground, and Mark O’ Brien’s close-range free was kept out by the Erin’s Own defence, and following a few attempts, the ball fell to Ryan Tierney who drilled the ball to the net to level it up and force extra-time.
From there on, the lads got a spring in their step, and in the first period of extra-time, a third goal arrived when a Neil O’ Sullivan’s cross shot was blocked by the Erin’s Own’s goalkeeper, but Luke Flynn was quick on the scene, and calmly rounded the goalie and steered the ball into the corner of the net. From there on, there was only one winner, as Ferrybank kept the pressure up as six unanswered scores from Mark O’ Brien (4), Ryan Tierney, and Robbie Carew sealed a great win.
It’s now onto the semi-final where Ballygunner await, and no doubt a stiff test awaits the team. The match will take place on Saturday, August 27th at 5:30pm in St. Saviours’ GAA grounds, where all support will be appreciated. Scorers Mark O' Brien (0-12), Robbie Carew (1-02), Luke Flynn (1-01), Ryan Tierney (1-01), Neil O’ Sullivan (0-03), MJ Sutton (0-03), John Ahern (0-01).
JUNIOR HURLING:
The Junior Hurlers are in the semi-final of the John J Murphy Eastern Championship action this coming Sunday, when they play Tramore in Dunhill at 5pm. The team received a walkover from St. Saviour’s last time out. We would ask everyone to come out and support the team.
MINOR HURLING:
Our Minor hurlers travelled to An Rinn last Wednesday night, and despite being short a number of players came away with a 4-17 to 1-13 win over An Ghaeltacht.
It was the homeside who made the brighter start with two points, but the lads found their rhythm with seven of the next eight points through Adam Aspel, Shane Purcell, Finn McGarrity (2), Jay Bagge, Caolan MacCathmhaoil and Conor Haley. The opening goal soon arrived when a long ball into the An Ghaeltacht defence was caught by Shane Purcell and he made no mistake from close range. Further scores from Finn, Conor and Shane ensured a 1-10 to 0-05 lead. An early Dean Clarke point kept the scoreboard ticking over, and any hopes of an An Ghaeltacht comeback were soon dashed, as a long range free from Caolan went all the way to the net. Solid defending by Paddy Mackey, Conor D and Harry Flanagan ensured any goal threat by the an Ghaeltacht was being kept out, and Jay Bagge got goal number three following a good flowing move. With the game entering the closing stages, a long ball was gathered by Conor H, and his quick turn gave him the space to hit a low drive into the corner of the net. Points from Jay and Shane finished the scoring.
A good display from the team, who have won all their seven games in the league stage, and now move on to the semi-finals where they play Clashmore/Kinsalebeg this coming Wednesday, August 24th at 6;30pm in Dungarvan GAA grounds.
All support will be welcomed on the night, and this will be a tough test for the team.

UNDER 13 HURLING:
No joy for the combined Ferrybank/Sacred Heart team as they were defeated by Cappoquin/Naomh Brid in the quarter-finals last Saturday afternoon in Modeligo GAA grounds. Short a couple of players, the team made a good start with a couple of goals and fine points in the process, and went into the break with the lead.
However, facing the breeze in the second-half, Cappoquin/Naomh Brid began to get on top with a number of scores, as Ferrybank/Sacred Heart side found it hard going. Credit to the team, as they kept on battling, but in the end, the home side ran out worthy winners. A huge thanks to everyone associated with both clubs for assisting in the team’s preparations throughout the championship.
INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:
The Intermediate Camogie side were defeated in the Arachas Insurance sponsored competition last Sunday morning against Lismore on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-10. A goal in each half from the visitors proved crucial, as there was little to separate both sides over the course of the game.
Niamh Ahearne got the opening score of the game from a placed ball, but Lismore levelled it up with a point, and following a sustained period of pressure, the visitors got their first goal, with a high ball into the area that went all the way to the net. The Ferrybank defence were working hard, repelling the Lismore forwards, with Orla, Iona and Helen holding firm. Points from Niamh and Valerie kept Ferrybank in the hunt, and only trailed by three points at the break.
Early points from Áine and Niamh in the second half brought the girls right back into it in the second-half, and Ferrybank were enjoying a good spell but couldn’t turn the chances into scores. Crucially, a second goal arrived for Lismore, when a loose ball was picked up by the visitors and, from close range, a low drive went into the net past Amy.
Tried as they did, Lismore defence was proving hard to pass, with Áine almost getting a goal, but her attempt with her foot went wide. That was their final chance as the whistle went. Next up for the team is a trip to play Tallow next Saturday at 7pm, where all support will be greatly appreciated.

It was a busy week for the U7 hurlers with Ballyhale coming to the club grounds last Wednesday to play two games. Another excellent effort from the players on the night, showing plenty of skills, which resulted in goals galore through Reece and Jamie. Thanks to Ballyhale for coming down, and playing their part in the matches.
On Saturday morning, it was an early start for the team as they went down to St. Brigid’s GAA grounds in Wexford to play in a five-game blitz against teams from Wexford, Waterford and Kilkenny.
