ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

The Intermediate hurlers made a winning start to this year’s championship with a convincing 2-26 to 0-08 win over St Mollerans last Friday. A scoring blitz of 2-10 to 0-02 in a twenty-minute period before and after half-time finished this game as a contest.

Early points from Mark O’ Brien and Neil O’ Sullivan got the lads off to a good start, before St. Mollerans replied from a placed ball. Ferrybank were having a lot of the ball, and further scores from Robbie Carew (2) and Mark O’ Brien opened up a five point lead. St. Mollerans gradually got into the game and reduced the gap to two points with three quick scores. However, that’s as close as they got as Ferrybank began to up the tempo, with quick ball being delivered into the forward line, which saw points from Ryan Tierney, Neil O’ Sullivan and Mark O’ Brien. Just before the half-time break, Ferrybank got their opening goal when a long ball from Shane O’ Sullivan was caught by Ryan Tierney, who picked out the unmarked Robbie Carew, and from close range dispatched the ball to the net. Further scores from the O’ Sullivan brothers and Mark O’ Brien ensured a healthy 1-12 to 0-04 lead at the break.

Ferrybank continued to attack after the break, with points from Ryan Tierney and Mark O’ Brien (3). A second goal soon arrived when St. Mollerans failed to clear their lines and the loose ball was picked up by Mark O' Brien who ran forward and drilled a low shot to the corner of the net to open up a 2-16 0-06 lead. With the defence totally on top, the forwards were getting plenty of ball into them to compete for, and more points followed from Luke Flynn, Neil O’ Sullivan, Robbie Carew, and wingback Davy Atkins.

Credit to St. Mollerans as they kept battling away, but on the day, Ferrybank showed a good attitude and work rate, forcing plenty of turnovers, and points from Mark O’ Brien (3), Robbie Carew (2) and Ryan Tierney closed out the win.  A good win from the side, who didn’t take their foot off the gas, which will have pleased the selectors, but no doubt stiffer tests awaits. Next up for the team is De La Salle on Sunday, August 7th at 4:15pm in Walsh Park, where the winners of this game will go into the quarter-finals as a seeded team. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the night. TEAM Johno Brown, Ben Fitzpatrick, Naoise MacCathmhaoil, Graham Coady, MJ Sutton, Shane O’ Sullivan (0-01), Davey Atkins (0-01), Seamus Burtchaell, Luke Flynn (0-01), Cormac Heffernan, Mark O' Brien (1-11), Ruadhri McGarrity, Robbie Carew (1-05), Neil O’ Sullivan (0-04), Ryan Tierney (0-03), Tommy Carew, Kevin Hurley, Damien Ahern, Shane Oates, Cian Martin, John Ahern.

JUNIOR HURLING:

The Junior hurlers made it two from two with a good win against Clonea last Thursday on a scoreline of 4-19 to 2-08. A good second-half performance, in which all four goals were scored, paved the way for the win.

Early scores from Shane Oates and Darryl Griffin got the team off to a good start. From there on Ferrybank began to take control with further scores from John Ahern, Cormac O’ Driscoll and Darryl Griffin. The defence was solid, not giving much away, with plenty of scoring chances being set up. However, some wasteful finishing prevented Ferrybank from enjoying a bigger lead at the break. Unanswered scores from Greg Murphy, Shane Oates, Cormac O’ Driscoll and John Ahern saw the side hold a 0-11 to 0-06 at the break.

Just after the break, Ferrybank hit a purple patch that finished the game as a contest, with goals in quick succession from John Ahern, following a fine pass from Darryl Griffin, and Shane Oates got the second goal racing through the defence and scoring from close range.

Credit to Clonea as they kept battling away, and they breached Sam Lawless’ goal with two green flags. Quick points from Cormac O’ Driscoll and Shane Oates kept the scoreboard ticking over. Entering the closing stages, Darryl Griffin got goal number three, and right on full-time Tommy Doyle got goal number four with a first time pull that saw the sliothar go into the corner of the net.

Next up for the team is a trip to play Ballyduff Lower on Thursday, August 4th at 7:15pm.

TEAM: Sam Lawless, Lee Power, Stephen O' Kane, Paul Carew, Tommy Carew, Damien Ahern, Alex Kinsella, Kevin Hurley, Maciez Tomczuk, Greg Murphy (0-01), John Ahern (1-03), Shane Oates (1-04), Cormac O' Driscoll (0-08), Darryl Griffin (1-03), Pawel Tomczuk, Tommy Doyle (1-00), John Collins, Oran MacCathmhaoil.

MINOR HURLING:

Our Minor hurlers are back in action this coming Wednesday, August 3rd with a home game against Ballyduff Upper at 7pm. With three wins from three, the team will want to keep the good run going, and all support will be appreciated on the night.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank/St. Saviours U15 hurlers are back in action this coming Monday, August 1st with Abbeyside providing the opposition in Ferrybank at 7pm. All support will be appreciated on the night.

UNDER 11:

Our U11 hurlers had a great win over Ballygunner last Friday night winning on a scoreline of 1-2 to 1-1. Fair play to the team, who worked hard all over the pitch, and came away with the win, which will give them plenty of confidence going forward.

UNDER 10 HURLING:

Our U10 hurlers are in action this coming Saturday, August 6th where they travel to play Ballygunner at 11am. Best of luck to all concerned.

UNDER 7 HURLING:

It was a busy week for the U7s with the team taking part in a blitz last Monday, involving themselves, Ballygunner and Mount Sion. Over 27 boys and girls togged out for the parish, and put in another great display, showing tremendous attitude throughout the games.

The team are now preparing for their next assignment, which is a blitz in Wexford this month. Training has now moved up a notch or two, as they are now learning the skill of hand striking and catching under the watchful eye of Mark O' Brien, so plenty of hard work is going into them, and credit to the trainers/mentors for all the hard work being put in during the year. Well done to Under 7's Joey and Millie on their Star Hurler of the Week awards, and to Zoey on the Under 8 section.

COUNTY DUTY:

Wishing a speedy recovery to Camogie Player Iona Heffernan who suffered a finger injury in the Senior Camogie Championship against Clare a couple of weeks ago. Iona defied the pain barrier to line out against Cork in the All Ireland semi-final last week and hopefully it won’t be too long before she is back in action with the club.

CONDOLENCES:

Ferrybank GAA club would like to offer its sincerest sympathies to the family of the late Charlie Hoban who sadly passed away last Monday. To wife Kathleen, daughters, Lorainne, Amanda, Katrina, Nicola and Charlene, ar dheis de go raibh a h-anam.

This project will deliver a new building consisting of modern dressing rooms and a community-orientated multipurpose room for all.

Team 100 has delivered numerous projects for Ferrybank GAA club in the past, including our hurling alley, running track, ball stoppers, pitch drainage, car park tarmacking and the initial enabling works for this new project. To join Team 100, and contribute to the continued development of the club and community, please talk to any committee member, team mentor, or email ferrybankgaa@gmail.com for more details.
