ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR HURLING:

The Junior Hurlers made a winning start to this year’s championship with a dramatic one-point win over Portlaw last Friday, thanks to a last gasp goal from Kevin Hurley. The final scoreline was 1-21 to 3-14.

This was an even game, with the lead swapping over and back throughout the game. There was very little to choose between the teams early on, with points from Cormac O’ Driscoll, John Ahern, Shane Oates and Tommy Carew. However, towards the end of the opening half, four points from Shane Oates saw Ferrybank open up a six-point lead, and it looked like the lads would go into the break with a healthy lead, only for Portlaw to strike with a goal with the last puck of the half to reduce the lead to three points.

Despite an early score from Cormac O’ Driscoll, Portlaw struck for two quick goals in as many minutes to edge ahead. Nevertheless, points from Eoin O’ Neill, Cormac O’ Driscoll and John Ahern brought the sides level. It was anyone’s game from here, with further points from John Collins, Shane Oates and Darryl Griffin keeping Ferrybank in it. With the sides level going into the last couple of minutes, Portlaw edged ahead with two points, and it looked like they were on course for the win. However, a last chance free from the '21 from Cormac O’ Driscoll saw his shot saved by the Portlaw keeper, and as the ball rebounded out Kevin Hurley was first to react to the loose ball, and a first-time pull saw his shot slip into the corner of the net to get the win.

A good all round display from the team, that kept plugging away all evening, with Stephen O’ Kane and Charlie Atkins holding firm in defence. It is off to Clonea next for the team this coming Thursday, July 28th at 7:30pm, where all support will be welcome.

MINOR HURLING:

Our Minor hurlers made it three from three with a good win over Ballygunner ‘B last Thursday, winning on a scoreline of 3-18 to 1-09.

An early Jay Bagge goal got the team off to a good start, and a second goal arrived moments later, when good build up play by Caolan MacCathmahoil, Fionn and Jacob Richards saw Conor Haley dispatch the sliothar to the net. Ballygunner posed problems going forward, with Kyle Daly in goal pulling off a good save to prevent a goal. Just before the break, Ferrybank hit five unanswered scores through Jay Bagge (2), Fionn McGarrity, Adam Aspel and Conor Haley to ensure a 2-10 to 0-06 lead at the break.

Another excellent save from Kyle Daly in goal from close range early in the second-half proved vital, as a third goal soon arrived from Conor Haley. This paved the way with some more fine scores from Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Shane Purcell, Jay Bagge and Adam Aspel to run out worthy winners.

Next up for the side is this coming Wednesday, July 29th home to St. Marys at 7:30pm.

TEAM: Kyle Daly, Paddy Mackey, Sean Adeyeni, Caolan MacCathmhaoil (0-01), Adam Aspel (0-02), Conor Daly, Lochlann Flanagan, Izaak Richards, Harry Flanagan, Fionn McGarrity (0-02), Shane Purcell (0-01), Conor Haley (2-07), Jay Bagge (1-04), Jacob Richards, Dean Clarke, Ryan Hughes.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

Ferrybank/St. Saviours recorded a big win over Naomh Brid last Tuesday. The combined team were in control from start to finish, thus maintaining their push for Championship honours

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

This coming Friday, July 29th will see our Intermediate hurlers begin their championship campaign against St. Mollerans in Fenor at 7:30pm.

Tickets must be pre-purchased online for this game from this link. No cash will be accepted at the turnstiles. All support will be appreciated, so best of luck lads.

COUNTY DUTY:

It wasn’t to be for the Waterford Senior Camogie team last Saturday in Croke Park against Cork. Nobody could fault the performance and effort they put into the game, and went narrowly down in the end.

Hard luck to the team, which included Doxer Burns as coach, Iona Heffernan at full back, panel member Valerie O’ Brien, and to the rest of the team. Be proud of your achievements, and no doubt the team will be back stronger next year.

PEADAR’S SUMMER CAMP:

Peadar’s Summer Camp returned to the club grounds last Monday following a two-year absence. Over 240 children took part in the action packed week. With excellent weather conditions, the children were put through their paces learning the skills of the game, with many fun filled activities as well.

As we all know, a lot of planning goes into organising this event, and a special word of thanks to the 50 volunteers who gave up their week to help out, and ensure everything passed off safely. Thanks to Ray Breen and his staff from Kel-Tech engineering for sponsoring the camp, and to Tomas Caulfield of SuperValu for supplying the Party packs to all the children after the event, which went down a treat.

In addition, thanks to the parents/guardians for ensuring the children had their hats and suncream each day during the wonderful summer weather. We look forward to seeing them all in 2023.
