INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
The Intermediate hurlers were narrowly defeated by Ballyduff Upper in the final of the All-County Division 3 Hurling League in Dungarvan GAA grounds last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-12.
It was a low scoring opening half, with both sides sharing the opening six points, with Mark O’ Brien scoring the three Ferrybank points. Cormac Heffernan gave Ferrybank the lead for the first time with a point. Moments later, a fine run by Ruadhri McGarrity saw him being bundled over in the square, and from the resulting penalty, Mark O’ Brien dispatched it high into the net to extend the lead. Both sides were guilty of a number of wides in the opening half, with passes also going astray. Both sides exchanged a point each just before the break to leave it 1-05 to 0-5 in Ferrybank’s favour.
Three early points from Mark O’ Brien (including a fine sideline) extended the lead, but Ballyduff Upper’s running game was beginning to cause Ferrybank’s defence a few problems, which saw them get in for two quick goals in three minutes to reduce the gap. A fine point from Ruadhri McGarrity pushed the lead out to two, but Ballyduff Upper began to get on top and hit seven unanswered points to quickly open up a five-point lead. Another Mark O’ Brien point reduced the gap, and deep into injury time Cormac Heffernan was first to react to a loose ball and put the sliothar into the net to just leave a point in it. One last chance failed to yield the levelling score, as the men in red held out to claim the win.
The team will learn a lot from this game, where they hit a number of wides, and a crucial second-half period saw Ballyduff Upper out score them, but they kept battling away to the end. Thanks to all who came down and supported the team on the day.
