ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Junior Footballers were narrowly defeated by Butlerstown in their opening game in the Tony Kirwan Plant Hire Eastern Championship last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 2-08 to 0-9. Despite missing a number of players, the team battled hard all the way, and were still in it, right up to the last kick of the game, trailing by just two points, but the visitors secured the points with a goal.

It was Butlerstown who got the first point of the match, but Greg Murphy quickly levelled it up with a good score. Despite having to weather some early Butlerstown pressure, the lads settled down and put together a few nice passages of play, which were rewarded with scores from the two Shanes, Dineen and Oates, to edge them ahead. Ferrybank missed a great chance of a goal when a good move saw Davy Atkins going through on goal but his shot was saved by the Butlerstown goalie. Towards the end of the half, Butlerstown came more into the game, and hit over three unanswered points to lead 0-05 to 0-03 at the break.

An early second-half point from Greg Murphy reduced the gap, but minutes later, Butlerstown got a crucial goal, when a quickly taken free saw the defence switch off, and the unmarked Butlerstown player saw him one on one with James Troy and slotted the ball into the net. However, the lads kept fighting away, and points from Naoise, MacCathmhaoil, Robbie Carew and Shane Dineen kept the team in the mix. Despite surviving a few nervy moments at the other end, further points from Cormac Heffernan and Shane Dineed, reduced the gap to two entering the last minute. Trying to work the ball out of defence for one last attack didn’t work out, as a mistake left in Butlerstown for a simple goal which secured the win.

The lads couldn’t be faulted for their effort and commitment throughout the game, and hopefully they should come on from this match, as they tackle Mount Sion this coming Tuesday in Carraiganore at 8pm.

INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:

It’s a big game for the Intermediate Camogie team next Saturday, October 16th, as they travel to play Bricjey Rangers at 4pm. Victory is essential for the team if they want to keep their hopes of a knockout place alive. No doubt, support will be crucial on the day, and we would ask everyone to go along and show your support. Best of luck girls.

DÉISE DRAW:

The fourth Déise Draw will take place this coming Wednesday, October 13th, and we wish everyone the best of luck, and are hopeful of having a few winners on the night. The confined draw for last month was won by Robbie Carew.

ANNUAL FUNDRAISER:

All going well, the club intends to hold its annual fundraiser night Kilcohan Park on Saturday November 20th. So put this date in your diary, and as further news comes to hand, we will keep you posted.

Thanks to Iona, Sinead, Julie, Marguerite and Amy for organising the presentation awards, and also to the Peadar’s Summer Camp committee for sponsoring the event.
