ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Pride of place this week goes to our U13 hurlers who were crowned County Champions in Fraher Field last Monday, defeating a spirited An Ghaeltacht side on a scoreline of 5-06 to 1-05. An excellent second-half performance from the team was key to this win, and overall the lads were deserving of victory on the night. When the sides met in the league campaign, An Gaeltacht scored five goals, and since then, the selectors worked hard on the defensive side of play. Credit to the lads last Monday as they gave virtually nothing to their opponents, and the hard work paid off.

The opening exchanges were cagey enough, with both sides battling hard for possession, and points from Mark Flanagan and Jack Hoban gave Ferrybank a 0-02 to 0-01 lead. Ferrybank began to create chances, but failed to convert them. However, they finally converted one when Jack Hoban scored a fine goal, but An Gaeltacht struck with two points to edge ahead 1-02 to 0-04 at the break.

An Ghaeltacht started the second-half quicker with 1-01 to open up a three-point lead. Moments later, they had a chance to extend their lead, when they were awarded a penalty, but Tommy Lea in the goal pulled off an outstanding save, and this seemed to inspire the team, as Finn Carter was brought down in the box, and from the resulting penalty Mark Flanagan scored form the spot to level it up.

From there on, Ferrybank drove on and Finn Carter got goal number three to open a three-point lead. Points from Max O’ Sullivan and Mark Flanagan had Ferrybank on the front foot. With the Ferrybank defence giving nothing away, two further goals by Finn Carter secured the win, with Daniel Brennan with a fine point rounded off the scoring.

An excellent win for the team, with everyone contributing on the night, and captain Jack Hoban collected the trophy on behalf of the team amid joyous scenes. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who turned up on the night, and special word of praise to John, Áine, Cormac and Brian who have trained the team from day one, and the hard work has paid off, and to all the players, keep up the good work.

UNDER 13 FOOTBALL:

It's back to the big ball this coming Friday, August 13th, for the U13s as they play St. Mary’s in Ferrybank at 7:30pm.

UNDER 15 FOOTBALL:

Our U15 Footballers secured a good win over Dungarvan on Sunday morning, winning on a scoreline of 3-03 to 2-04. A late goal from Caolan MacCathmhaoil secured the points.

Dungarvan got the opening point, but Caolan MacCathmhaoil quickly levelled it up. With both sides having chances to score, Ferrybank finally took a goal chance when Paddy Mackey’s shot hit the post, and Jay Bagge was on hand to score from close range. Dungarvan replied with a point to leave it 1-01 to 0-02 at the break.

A second goal from Jay Bagge put Ferrybank further clear in the second-half, but Dungarvan replied instantly with a goal. Moments later, they were awarded a penalty which was duly converted to take the lead. Lochlann Flanagan replied with a point to level it up, but with chances going a begging, Dungarvan edged ahead with a point, and with time almost up, Ferrybank got a free, and Caolan's quick thinking free saw his shot end up in the top corner of the net for the winning score. Next game is this coming Wednesday, away to St Olivers at Ballinameela GAA grounds at 6pm.

COUNTY DUTY:

Hard luck to Mark O' Brien and the Waterford Senior hurling team that were defeated by Limerick in last Saturday’s All-Ireland senior hurling semi-final in Croke Park.
