Our Intermediates Hurlers were defeated by Dunhill in Walsh Park last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 3-17 2-14. The lads now play Fenor next Saturday, with the winners progressing to the quarter-finals.
Ferrybank got off to the worst possible start by conceding two goals in the opening two minutes. Despite a point from Mark O' Brien, Dunhill kept up the pressure by hitting over four quick points to open up a nine point lead. With a few switches made on the field, Ferrybank began to settle with points from Robbie Carew, Mark O’ Brien and Neil O’Sullivan. Midway through the first-half, a fine pass from Oisín MacCathmhaoil to the in-rushing Neil O’ Sullivan, resulted in his low hard shot from the '21 ending up in the corner of the net. Just a minute later, another good move from Ferrybank saw Robbie Carew bearing down on goal, and his goal bound shot was brilliantly tipped away by the Dunhill goalkeeper at the expense of a '65. Ferrybank began to get on top in the midfield and in the half-back line and points from Robbie Carew (2) and Mark O’ Brien (2) closed the gap to a point. Coming up to half-time, a fine pass from Robbie Carew into Cormac Heffernan, who evaded a couple of tackles to drill the ball to the net. Two more points from Mark O’ Brien ensured a four point lead at the break.
Dunhill started the second-half the better with three points, and Cormac Heffernan saw his goal-bound shot saved by the Dunhill goalkeeper, and from the resulting clearance, the ball broke to the Dunhill forward who slotted the ball to the corner of the net to edge them into the lead. From there on, Dunhill took control of the game, winning the breaks, as our lads found it hard to create any chances, and four pointed frees from Dunhill extended their lead. Despite a couple of scores from Mark O’ Brien, Dunhill protected their goal in the closing stages, keeping the lads at bay and running out winners in the end.
Despite a poor start, the lads battled back to get right back into the game, but found it hard to get going in the second-half, but they have to dust themselves down for next Saturday, September 4th at 5:30pm with Fenor awaiting for a place in the quarter-finals, with the venue being Butlerstown. Team: Cian Martin, Davey Atkins, Naoise MacCathmhaoil, Graham Coady, MJ Sutton, Damien Ahern, Ryan Tierney, Luke Flynn, Mark O’ Brien (0-10), Kevin Hurley, Cormac Heffernan (1-0), Neil O’ Sullivan (1-1), Robbie Carew (0-3), Oisín MacCathmhaoil, Sam Lawless, Ben Fitzpatrick, Shane O’ Sullivan, Darryl Griffin, Tommy Carew, Shane Oates.
JUNIOR HURLING:
The Junior hurlers recorded a hard fought win over Clonea last Thursday night with a 1-08 to 1-05 win last Thursday. The team had to survive a few nervy moments in the closing stages of the game, but in truth, if they had taken their chances in the opening half, they would have ran out comfortable winners.
An early Darryl Griffin point got the team on the board, and moments later, Shane Oates scored a fine individual goal, going on a solo run, before striking the sliothar into the top corner of the net. Further points from Tiaran Morrissey, Tommy Carew and Shane Oates put Ferrybank in control. Despite being on top, the lads missed some good scoring opportunities to extend their lead, and at the break lead by 1-05 to 0-03.
Clonea came more into it in the second-half, and got right back into it, with a goal to reduce the gap, and could have squared up the game, but a second goal was disallowed for a square ball. Badly needed points by Tiarnan Morrissey and Shane Oates eased the pressure. As the game entered its closing stages, the Ferrybank defence held firm as Clonea looked for that goal to level it up. However, a good win for the team and this will give them confidence as they travel to play Tramore next Thursday at 6:30pm.
Scorers: Shane Oates (1-04), Tiarnan Morrissey (0-02), Tommy Carew (0-01), Darryl Griffin (0-01).
MINOR HURLING:
Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s had a busy few days, firstly taking on Roanmore last Wednesday. Despite an early goal from Ruadhri McGarrity, the Roanmore forward line was causing the defence problems, and quickly moved up a gear after the water break, hitting 2-06, despite scores from Aaron and Adam.
After the break, the team came a lot more into it, with a fine goal from Darragh Corcoran and points from Aaron reduced the gap to six. However, Roanmore kicked on with further points, and despite a goal from the excellent Aaron Jacob, Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s fell seven points short at the final whistle.
Last Sunday morning, An Ghaeltacht came to Ferrybank for a crucial game, and it was the men from the west who made a quick start with 1-03 on the board early on. Points from Aaron (2) and Ruadhri steadied the ship, but An Ghaeltacht got a second goal to extend the lead. Just before the water break, a close in free from Ruadhri ended up in the net to give the lads hope. An Ghaeltacht looked a threat going forward and despite points from Izaak and Ruadhri, the combined side trailed by five at the water break. An excellent second quarter from Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s saw the lads eat into the lead, with a second goal arriving from Finn from close range which levelled it up. Points from Aaron, Izaak and Ruadhri saw them go into a two point lead.
However, after the break, An Ghaeltacht came right back, scoring five points on the spin to lead by three, and entering the closing stages, a close in free saw Aaron's shot deflect into the net to level it up, and give them a share of the spoils on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-15. It’s off to Colligan for the lads this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm, with a vital game against St. Patrick’s/Naomh Bríd.
UNDER 8 CAMOGIE:
Our U8 Camogie team made the trip to Clonea last Saturday morning for their third blitz of the year that also included Lismore, Portlaw and the hosts Clonea. A great effort was put in by the girls over the three games, where they all worked together as a team during the matches, showing some great camogie skills on the field and getting some fine scores along the way.
Well done girls, all the hard work is now paying off. Thanks to all the mentors for their time, and to the parents who came along to support them.
UNDER 9 FOOTBALL:
Our U9 Footballers made the trip to Fenor to play Dunhill last Saturday morning. Both sides served up a good game of football, and fair play to the team, as they fought hard for the ball.
Again, thanks to all the mentors, parents who helped out on the day.
UNDER 14 CAMOGIE:
No joy for the U14 Camogie side who went down to Mount Sion and Gailltír during the week. With all of the team underage for next season, the girls are putting in a great effort and no doubt the future bodes well for them.
