ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

The Intermediate hurlers qualified for the quarter-finals of the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs Eastern Championship with a comfortable win over Fenor last Saturday. Ferrybank got off to a quick start to the game with a goal from Mark O' Brien in the opening minute, following good build up play from Cormac Heffernan and Oisín MacCathmhaoil. Points from Kevin Hurley and Neil O’ Sullivan extended the lead. Coming towards the first-half water break, a second goal arrived for Ferrybank when a long ball delivered into the Fenor area was flicked to the net by Oisín MacCathmhaoil, ensuring a 2-06 to 0-02 lead. From there on Ferrybank controlled the half, and had to survive some feisty Fenor challenges which were punished by Mark O' Brien accuracy from placed balls. Robbie Carew completed the scoring in the first-half with a fine point ensuring a 2-10 to 0-4 lead at half-time.

Points from Neil O’ Sullivan (2) early in the second-half kept the score board ticking over, and once again some poor discipline from Fenor resulted in white flags from placed balls for Mark O’ Brien. The Ferrybank defence kept firm throughout the game giving little away to their opponents, and Sam Lawless completed the scoring with a point from play. It was job done for the team, and it’s now onto the quarter-finals next Sunday, September 12th at 3:30pm in St. Saviour’s GAA grounds, where Ballygunner provide the opposition.

Hopefully a few injuries will have cleared up for this upcoming game, and your support will be crucial to the team on the day.

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior Hurlers went down to Tramore last Thursday night on a scoreline of 0-14 to 0-10. A missed penalty in the second-half was crucial with four points between the sides at that stage, but Tramore always held that lead during the game. All the three league games have now been completed, and the lads now go on to play away to Portlaw next Sunday at 11am in the quarter-finals. Your support will be crucial on the day.

UNDER 17 HURLING:

Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s kept their hopes alive of reaching the semi-finals with two big wins in the space of four days.

Last Wednesday night, the combined side travelled to play Naomh Bríd and came away with a fine 5-11 to 1-12 win. Last Sunday morning, Passage came to the GAA grounds, and it turned out to be an exciting game, with Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s edging it on a scoreline of 3-14 to 3-12. Despite conceding an early goal, the lads quickly replied through a Darragh Corcoran goal, but Passage got a second a couple of minutes later to regain the lead. Points from Conor, Jordan and Ruadhri tied up the game. A second goal arrived for the home team as Ruadhri went on a solo run before driving the ball low to the net. After the water break Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s got on top and points from Izaak, Conor and Ruadhri ensured a 2-08 to 2-03 lead at the break.

Passage came out stronger after the break with three quick points to close the gap, before a point from Izaak steadied the ship. Passage were causing a few problems up front, where Bobby, Ben and Shane were holding firm, and a third goal arrived when Ruadhri picked up a loose ball and drilling it to the back of the net. However Passage didn’t give up, and some slack marking in the defence left Passage for a goal to square it up, and the visitors hit the front with a point with minutes remaining, However, the lads dug deep and late late points from Izaak and Corky sealed a great win for the team.

Next up is a crucial match this coming Wednesday night, with a trip to play St. Molleran’s in Carrickbeg at 6:30pm, where your support will be vital.

Keep up the good work.
