ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 13 HURLING:

It’s a big night for the U13 hurlers as they are in semi-final action this coming Monday, July 26th, where they take on Ardmore at St. Molleran’s GAA grounds in Carrickbeg.

When the sides met in the league campaign, Ferrybank edged out an exciting win, with very little to separate the sides; so, another close game is on the cards.

On the night support will be crucial, so please come along and cheer on the lads. Best of luck to all concerned.

UNDER 12 HURLING:

Our U12 hurlers are in action this coming Tuesday, July 27th, with a home game against Clonea at 6:30pm.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

Our Intermediate Hurlers defeated Erin’s Own in the final of the All-County Division 3 Hurling League last Friday, winning on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-15 at Walsh Park. This was a thrilling game of hurling, with the sides level deep into injury time, where two points from Robbie Carew sealed the win.

Neil O’ Sullivan opened the scoring in the first minute with a point, which was then followed by another point from Mark O' Brien, before Erin’s Own opened their account with a pointed free. Ferrybank's opening goal soon followed, when a '65 from Robbie wasn't cleared properly, and Oisín MacCathmhaoil was first to react, and raised a green flag. This goal seemed to inspire Erin’s Own, who began to gain a lot of possession, and slowly tacked over three unanswered points.

Points from Robbie Carew and Luke Flynn kept Ferrybank in the hunt. From there on, until the half-time whistle, both sides gave everything, with scores being hard earned, with points from Mark O’Brien and Robbie Carew levelling it up at the break 1-06 to 0-09.

Minutes into the second-half, Erin’s Own got a goal, when a long range shot wasn’t cleared by the defence, and the sliothar ended up in the net, that opened up a three point lead. Credit to Ferrybank, as they refused to panic, and points from Robbie Carew and Mark O’ Brien (x 2) (fine sideline cut) reduced the gap to one. Neil O’ Sullivan then levelled it up, when his goal-bound shot, was brilliantly turned over the bar by the Erin’s Own goalie.

Both sides gave everything, with plenty of intensity being shown. Entering the closing minutes, Ferrybank got back into the lead, when Mark O’ Brien's shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but Oisín MacCathmhaoil was there to once again pounce on the loose ball to send it to the net to lead by two. However, Erin’s Own wouldn’t go away, and two late frees levelled the game up. As the game went into added time, and with possession now crucial, a Ferrybank attack ended up as a '65, which was duly converted by Robbie Carew. One last Erin’s Own attack was broken up, and from the sideline Robbie put the ball between the posts to seal the win.

This was an excellent game, with Erin’s Own giving everything, and on another day, could have ended up as winners, but credit to Ferrybank as they worked hard throughout the field, created a number of scoring chances especially in the second-half, and just about deserved the win on the night. Cormac Heffernan accepted the cup on behalf of the team.

PANEL: Cian Martin, Stephen O' Kane, David Atkins, Seamus Burtchaell, Graham Coady, Shane O’ Sullivan, MJ Sutton, John Ahern, Luke Flynn (0-01), Cormac Heffernan, Neil O’ Sullivan (0-02), Mark O' Brien (0-04), Oisin MacCathmhaoil (2-01), Ryan Tierney, Robbie Carew (0-06), Naoise MacCathmhaoil, Sam Lawless, Darryl Griffin, Alex Kinsella, Tiarnan Morrissey.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

The U15 hurlers were defeated by a strong De La Salle side in the quarter-final of the ‘Déise Draw in Dublin’ sponsored competition last Wednesday on a scoreline of 5-10 to 2-07. The damage was done in the opening half, with De La Salle opening up a 10 point lead, and despite a battling second-half, the gap was too big to bridge.

The opening quarter was evenly contested, and even though De La Salle tested the Ferrybank defence, the lads held firm. De La Salle had the opening two scores, before Adam Aspel replied with a point. Just before the water break, De La Salle put over another point to lead 0-03 to 0-01. From there on, De La Salle took control, putting over 1-03 without reply, and despite two points from Conor Haley, the Ferrybank forwards found it hard to get anything from the De La Salle defence. Right on the half-time whistle, a second De La Salle goal extended the lead to 2-07 to 0-03 at the break.

The second-half was a lot more even, with Ferrybank come more into the game with points from Conor Haley and Finn McGarrity (x 2). With goals now needed, Ferrybank raised two green flags in two minutes with Adam Aspel receiving a pass from Finn McGarrity and hitting it to the back of the net. Moments later, a second goal from Adam Aspel came when his long range shot sailed over the De La Salle goalkeepers head to give them a lifeline.

Unfortunately, the joy was short lived, as De La Salle kept probing away, and with time running out, they scored two goals to seal the win. Finn McGarrity was unlucky to see hit close range shot brilliantly saved by the De La Salle goalkeeper for goal number three, and Lochlann Flanagan got his name on the scoresheet with a point to complete the scoring.

On the night, the lads came up against a strong De La Salle side, who caused them problems throughout the match, however, credit to the team who kept battling away, especially in the second-half, and no doubt will have learned a lot from the game.

Thanks to John Haley, Marty Freeman, Brian Richards and Conor McGarrity for preparing the team for the championship.

PANEL: Kyle Daly, Paddy Mackey, Sean Akeyami, Jacob Richards, Harry Flanagan, Adam Aspel (2-01), Lochlann Flanagan (0-01), Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Finn McGarrity (0-02), Sean Byrne, Ryan Hughes, Dean Clarke, Conor Haley (0-03), Jay Bagge, Mark Flanagan, Max O' Sullivan, Jack Hoban.

UNDER 17 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank/St. Saviour’s combined team had a good win over Ballygunner last Thursday, winning on a scoreline of 6-16 to 2-12 in the Minor Hurling league. This was another useful workout for the team, having completed their three group games against good opposition, and it’s now onto Championship action, which will commence in August.

COUNTY DUTY:

Again, it was another busy week for all players representing the County, and well done to Mark O' Brien and the Waterford Senior hurling team on their good win over Galway, and now qualify for the quarter-finals next Saturday and will play Tipperary.

Well done to Iona Heffernan and Doxer Burns and the Waterford Senior Camogie team on their excellent win over Dublin last Saturday, which guarantees them a quarter-final place. Congratulations also to Helen Connolly and the Waterford Minor Camogie team on their good win over Wexford in Enniscorthy last Sunday, while hard luck to Niamh Ahearne and Valerie O' Brien who were part of the Waterford Junior Camogie side that were defeated away to Armagh last Saturday.

UNDER 10 CAMOGIE:

Our U10 Camogie team made the trip to Brickey Rangers last Saturday morning to take part in blitz challenge games. There was some great Camogie on display from the girls, and put in some excellent displays over the games they played. Well done to all concerned, and thanks to Brickey’s for the invite.

MOTHERS & OTHERS:

The Mothers & Others Ladies Football team are now back in training on a Monday nights from 8-9pm in the club’s grounds. Everyone is most welcome to come along and attend, especially for anyone who has never played, full coaching is provided.

DÉISE DRAW:

The 2021 Déise Draw will commence tomorrow (Tuesday, July 27th) and will run until December, with six draws taking place. Each draw will cost €15, and once again, similar to last year, there will be twenty cash prizes up for grabs, with the top prize €10,000.

Again, we would appeal to everyone associated with the club to get involved and purchase a Déise Draw ticket for the year ahead, as 70% of the ticket sales are retained by the club, and this money goes towards the day-to-day running of the club.
