JUNIOR FOOTBALL:
Our Junior Footballers exited this year’s championship after being defeated by Roanmore last Friday night. Despite opening the scoring through a Luke Flynn point, it was the visitors who dominated the opening half, with quicker passing and movement. Roanmore hit two quick goals in as many minutes to open up a lead.
Ferrybank found it hard to create chances in that half, as Roanmore continued to dominate possession, and five unanswered points put them into a big lead, before Robbie Carew replied with a point just before half-time.
Ferrybank improved in the opening period of the second-half and replied with a goal from Shane Dineen from close range, and the same player hit over a fine point to give the lads hope. However, Roanmore regained the upper hand and hit over four more points to extend the lead, and with time almost up, that man Shane Dineen got his second goal, finishing off a good passing move.
No excuses on the day, as the better team won, and thanks to Marty Freeman for looking after the team for the Championship.
UNDER 15 HURLING:
No joy for the U15 hurlers last Wednesday night, as they were defeated by Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower in the quarter-finals of the 'Déise in Dublin' sponsored competition.
Short two keys players in the game proved crucial, as the combined team pulled away in the second half, as the lads began to run out of steam. The opening four scores were shared with Izaak Richards on the score sheet for the homeside. Ferrybank hit the front with a goal from Shane Purcell, and this seemed to spur them on with further points from Finn McGarrity, Jay Bagge and Izaak Richards.
Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower were testing the Ferrybank defence, and in goal, Kyle Daly had to be at his best with two excellent saves to keep the lead intact. Another point from Finn McGarrity ensured Ferrybank lead by 1-06 to 0-04 at the break.
Portlaw/ Ballyduff Lower registered two quick points at the start of the half, before a point from Izaak Richards kept the lead going. However, the combined side began to get on top, winning a lot more ball, and that was reflected with four unanswered points to level it up. Just on the stroke of the water break, Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower got in for a goal, and this seemed to knock out the lads, as the combined team got stronger and stronger scoring points from all angles. Tried as they could, Ferrybank looked for that all important goal, but couldn’t get through the defence, as Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower ran out comfortable winners on 2-17 to 1-08.
Thanks to John Heffernan for helping out Brian Richards on the night, and also to John Haley and Marty Freeman in preparing the team during the campaign.
