ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

CAMOGIE:

It was semi-final heartbreak for the Ferrybank Intermediate Camogie side as they were defeated by Dungarvan in the semi-final of the Hooper Dolan sponsored competition on a scoreline of 4-17 to 2-18 after extra-time in Dunhill last Saturday evening.

The girls gave it their all over the 80 minutes against a star studded team. It was Dungarvan who made the better start registering a quick 1-02 in the opening minutes. By the water break Dungarvan held a 1-04 to 0-03 lead. Ferrybank came a lot more into the game after that, gaining more possession, and even though they trailed by 1-09 to 0-07 at the break, they certainly weren’t out of this game.

Two quick second-half goals put Ferrybank into the lead for the first time at 2-10 to 2-09, and with both sides trading point for point, Dungarvan lead by a point with the game entering the final moments, Valerie O' Brien stepped up with a late leveller of a point to force extra time at 2-13 each.

Two early points put Ferrybank ahead, but crucially, Dungarvan struck for a third goal just before half-time in extra-time to give them the lead. With the legs beginning to tire, Ferrybank tried to breach the Dungarvan defence for that vital goal, but the Old Boro held firm, and scored a fourth goal to seal victory, and a place in the final.

The girls should be extremely proud of their performance, they gave it their all, fought to the end, and no doubt if they stay together a bright future lies ahead. Thanks to Paul, Shiner and Donnacha for all their help in preparing the team for the campaign. We wish Dungarvan all the best in the final.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

An understrength Junior Football side went down to Mount Sion in their opening game of this year’s competition on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-05. No fault can be attributed to the team, as they kept battling away for the hour, and a couple of missed chances would have made the scoreline a bit closer.

Greg Murphy levelled up the score early on after Mount Sion opened the scoring, as from there on, the lads were competitive, despite four pointed frees from Mount Sion extended their lead. Greg Murphy replied with another point, and moments later Glen Power saw his goal-bound shot saved by the goalie. Mount Sion replied with two points to lead 0-7 to 0-2 at the break. Another point from Greg Murphy reduced the gap, but a couple of minutes Mount Sion broke through to score the only goal of the game to put daylight between the sides.

Mount Sion had a chance to score a second goal from the spot, only for James Troy, in goal, to pull off a great save. The lads kept battling away and two points from Greg Murphy was the final contribution to the score. Next up for the team is an away match against St. Pauls at 6:30pm on Friday, September 4th.

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Our Minor Footballers qualified for the semi-final of this competition with a 1-06 to 0-03 win over Roanmore last Thursday evening. With heavy rain prior to throw-in making the underfoot conditions very slippery, both sided found this tough going, and it took over twenty minutes for the opening point to be scored through Ruaidhri McGarrity. Roanmore levelled it up just before half-time with their opening point.

Ferrybank scored a crucial goal just after the restart through Marco Oliveria from close range, and from there on, took control of the game, with points from Ola Akinjewe and Shane Oates (2) eased them further ahead. With the defence in good shape and Pawel in goal Tomczuk, pulling off a crucial save, two further points from Shane Oates eased Ferrybank to a good win, and a place in the semi-finals, where there opponents have yet to be confirmed.

PANEL: Pawel Tomczuk, Lee Clarke, Shane Bagge, Adam Aspel, Shane Oates (0-04), Richard Errijola-Lapitte, Izaak Richards, Ola Akinjewe (0-01), Mark Imren, Ruaidhri McGarrity (0-01), Daniel Griffin, Marco Oliveria, Shane Purcell, Caolan MacCathmhaoil.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Our U13 hurlers were defeated by Brickey Rangers in their quarter-final match last Wednesday night in Ferrybank on a scoreline of 5-11 to 1-10. Goals win matches in these games, and Brickeys took theirs at vital moments of the game to run out worthy winners. Just 48 hours earlier, the lads played St. Marys and ran out 2-04 to 2-02 after a hard fought battle.

UNDER 12 HURLING:

The U12 hurlers resumed to winning ways last Friday night with a good 2-08 to 3-02 win over a spirited Roanmore side in their latest City League game. A good display from the side, who battled away throughout the game, to claim the points.

DÉISE DRAW:

We had no luck on the opening night of the 2020 Déise Draw which took place at the Mount Sion Centre last Wednesday night. A huge thanks to all who have purchased tickets, which is a big fundraiser for the club, with 70% being retained. It’s still not too late to get involved, with a further five draws still to go.

Each ticket cost €15, and can be purchased from any committee member. The second draw takes place on Tuesday, September 18th.
