ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

 JUNIOR HURLING:

No joy for the Junior Hurlers last Sunday morning in the Eastern ‘C final of the John J Murphy sponsored competition as they went down in extra-time, after a titanic battle with Tramore, on a scoreline of 0-18 to 0-16.

It was the second period of extra-time in which the Sea-siders got on top to come out winners. Despite plenty of possession in the opening quarter, Ferrybank could only register one point through Greg Murphy, while Tramore had 4 points. However, Ferrybank kept in touch and closed the gap with points from Darryl Griffin (3) and Eoin O' Neill (1). With Darryl having a close range shot saved by the goalie in the opening half, Tramore lead at the break by 0-07 to 0-05.

Again, like the opening half, the second-half was tight with little to separate the sides, with points being traded, and five more Eoin O' Neill points brought the sides level again. Ferrybank’s defence held firm with Jake Brophy and Nicky Ryan in the full back line doing well. Ferrybank hit the front for the first time with Naoise MacCathmhaoil’s long range point. Tramore wouldn’t go away however, and levelled again through a free. The closing minutes were frantic, with both sides squandering possession in key areas. With two minutes to go, Eoin O’ Neill levelled the game up with a fine point from an acute angle.

Into extra-time, and with both sides feeling the strain, Ferrybank edged the opening half, with two points from Eoin O’ Neill to lead 0-15 to 0-14. However, Tramore, aided with the breeze in the second period, hit three unanswered frees to lead again. A great chance to level it up from Tiarnan Morrissey went a begging, and Tramore increased their lead to three with a point.

One last chance saw Eoin O’ Neill’s free just go over, and Tramore held on for the win. The lads gave it everything on the day, and lost nothing in defeat, and no doubt enjoyed their run in the competition.

A huge thanks to Stan Heffernan for looking after the team during the campaign, and best of luck to Tramore in the County final.

CAMOGIE:

Our Intermediate Camogie side qualified for the semi-final of the Hooper Dolan Insurance competition with a gutsy 1-07 to 0-08 win over a good Gailtír ‘B side in Cleaboy last Saturday evening. Despite been under pressure in the second-half, the girls dug deep, held their nerve, and scored two crucial points in the final quarter, while holding their opponents scoreless, proved decisive.

Aided with the breeze, Ferrybank had a lot of possession, and Valerie O' Brien hit three points to get them off to a good start. Slowly, Gailtír came more into it, and hit two points without reply to reduce the gap. Just before the water break, Ferrybank struck a crucial goal, when Valerie O' Brien hit a shot just inside the sideline, and the ball sailed over the Gailtír goalie and into the net. Another Valerie point extended the lead, but again, Gailtír replied with two points just before half-time to leave the score 1-04 to 0-04 at the break.

Against the breeze, Ferrybank’s defence was now being tested. Amy Boden in goal pulled off a good save to prevent a green flag. Niamh Ahearne scored a vital point to give some breathing space, but again, three unanswered Gailtír points levelled the game up entering the final quarter. Ferrybank’s defence held firm, not conceding anything silly, with the excellent Orla O' Neill leading the way, aided by Siobhan Heffernan and Chloe Laffan. With Helen Connolly and Iona Heffernan in midfield beginning to win possession, Valerie O' Brien edged them in front with a point, and moments later, Valerie scored another point to put them two clear.

Gailtír threw everything in the last minutes but to no avail, and the girls held out for a great win and now go onto the semi-finals.
