JUNIOR HURLING:
Our Junior hurlers qualified for the final of the John J Murphy sponsored competition with a 1-14 to 0-14 win over Portlaw in Fenor last Friday night.
A crucial final quarter saw the team outscore their opponents by 0-04 to 0-01 proved the difference in a close game. There wasn’t a lot between the sides in the opening quarter, with points from Stephen O' Kane, Eimhin Burns, Darryl Griffin and Eoin O’ Neill (2) ensuring the sides led by 0-5 to 0-4 at the water break. Portlaw almost got in for a goal shortly after the break, but Cian Martin pulled off a vital save from close range to keep the goal intact. Portlaw hit four unanswered scores to go into a three-point lead, but two points just before the break from Greg Murphy and Eoin O’ Neill ensured the team only trailed by one at the break.
Luke Butler put over a fine point to keep the lads in the hunt, and with both sides exchanging scores through Eoin O’ Neill and Greg Murphy, Ferrybank were awarded a penalty. However, Eoin O’ Neill’s shot was saved by the goalie. Moments later, Ferrybank were awarded another penalty, and Eoin stepped up, and make no mistake this time, striking low and hard into the corner of the net for a crucial goal. That goal gave the team huge belief, and with the defence holding firm, not giving Portlaw any chance of a goal, and with Maciez and Stephen working hard in midfield, points from Eoin O’ Neill (4) in the final quarter increased the lead out to four. Portlaw, to their credit, kept battling, but the lads weren’t going to be denied, and ran out worthy winners in the end.
Well done to Stan Heff and his team, and they now go on and play Tramore in the final, this Sunday at 11:30am in St. Saviours’ GAA ground in Ballybeg.

CAMOGIE:
Our Intermediate Camogie team recorded a good win over a spirited Modeligo side last Saturday night, winning on a scoreline of 3-12 to 1-7 that will set up a quarter final encounter against Gailtír ‘B.
An excellent opening quarter by the team paved the way for this win. An early Valerie O' Brien goal set them on their way. Further points from Eimear Larkin and Valerie O’ Brien (3) extended the lead. Things got even better for Ferrybank as Niamh Ahearne scored a second goal to open up a 10-point lead. Modeligo, to their credit kept going, and started to come more into the game, and replied with three unanswered points. However, Valerie O' Brien up front for Ferrybank hit another three points to have them leading 2-08 to 0-05 at the break.
Modeligo started the second-half better, and got a goal to put them right back into the game, but their hopes of a comeback were soon dashed, as Grainne Heffernan was first to react to a loose ball and drove the sliothar to the back of the net. That settled Ferrybank, and they began to get a grip on proceedings, and further points from Aine Prendergast, Helen Connolly 0(2) and Iona Heffernan completed a good win.
A good overall display from the side with the defence playing well, and the forwards creating chances, they can look forward in confidence to the quarter final against Gailtír next Saturday at 6:30pm in De La Salle Cleaboy.
UNDER 12 HURLING:
Our U12 hurlers hosted St. Mary’s last Friday night in their latest City League match. Following a good game, St. Mary’s emerged winners on a scoreline of 5-05 to 4-04. Played in good weather conditions, and the field in perfect condition, St. Mary’s were in control of the opening half leading by 3-02 to 0-01 at the break.
Ferrybank started the second-half well, but St. Mary’s hit them with a fourth goal. However, the lads kept battling away, picking off scores along the way, and this gave them more confidence to dominate the rest of the half, which resulted in them only trailing by 2 points going into the final minutes. However, a late St. Mary’s goal sealed the win for them in the end.
A good battling display for the team, and next up is a trip to play Mount Sion this coming Friday August 21st at 5:30pm.
