INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our Intermediate hurlers recorded an excellent win over
Portlaw earlier (Sunday afternoon) in Dunhill, winning on a scoreline of 3-16
to 2-14. A fine final quarter saw Ferrybank outscore their opponents by 2-04 to
1-0 to claim a deserved place in the quarter-finals.
With a swirling breeze blowing at times across the field,
Portlaw were slightly aided with it in the opening half, and quickly scored
four points in the opening three minutes to hit the ground running. However,
Ferrybank hit back with a goal from Robbie Carew, after receiving a pass from
Cormac Heffernan, he evaded a couple of defenders and drilled home from the
edge of the square. This settled Ferrybank down, and points were exchanged,
with Cormac O' Driscoll, Neil O’ Sullivan, Mark O' Brien and Ryan Tierney
levelling the game up. Portlaw hit a purple patch coming up to half-time scoring
1-3 without reply. Despite two further points from Mark O’ Brien, Portlaw lead
1-12 to 1-08 at the break.
An early Portlaw point extended the lead, but Ferrybank
began to get a grip on the game, and points from Neil O’ Sullivan, Robbie Carew,
Sam Lawless and Cormac O’ Driscoll closed the gap to two points. Following the water
break, Ferrybank took the lead when Mark O' Brien picked up a loose ball on the
run, ran at the defence and hit a bullet of a shot into the top corner of the
net. From there, Ferrybank drove on with a point from Robbie Carew. A minute
later, the same player was on hand from close range to put the ball into the
Portlaw net, after the goalie had parried the ball. Portlaw replied with a goal
of their own, but credit to the team, as they kept on attacking, and three
further points from MJ Sutton sealed a deserved victory.
A great display from the team, particularly in the second-half,
with the defence giving nothing away, conceding only 1-02 in the second half,
and with all six starting forwards scoring, everyone chipped in and played
their part. Our opponents will be known after next weekend’s play off matches.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for August 8th/9th.
SCORERS: Mark O' Brien (1-05), Robbie Carew (2-02), MJ
Sutton (0-03), Cormac O’ Driscoll (0-02), Neil O’ Sullivan (0-02), Sam Lawless (0-01),
Ryan Tierney (0-01).
JUNIOR HURLING:
Our Junior hurlers had to settle for a share of the spoils
last Saturday evening against Tramore in their latest game of this year’s John
J Murphy sponsored competition. A late Tramore goal looked like it had won it
for the Seasiders, but Naoise MacCathmhaoil came up with a last gasp point to
give the lads a deserved point, with the scoreline of 2-10 to 0-16.
There was little to separate the sides in the opening
quarter, with points from Eoin O' Neill, Darryl Griffin and Greg Murphy had the
sides level on four occasions. The Ferrybank defence had coped well, dealing
with a few tricky situations and further points from Paul Martin and Greg
Murphy ensured a 0-09 to 0-08 lead at the break.
Ferrybank started the second-half well with Eoin O' Neill’s
accuracy from place balls opening up a four-point lead. However, a couple of
goal chances went a begging with Paul Martin’s shot cleared of the line, and
Tommy Burtchaell failing to connect with the goal in sight. Just before the
water break, Tramore got a goal to reduce the gap to the minimum, but with the
game still in the balance, excellent scores from Sparky and a fine Tommy
Burtchaell point extended the lead. It looked like the lads would hold out for
a big win, but Tramore got a free, which was miss-hit, and the follow up came
back off of the bar and from close range was struck into the net to put Tramore
into the lead. With one last attack, Naoise picked up the ball in his own half,
went on a mazy run, evading a couple of tackles, and off of his left struck a
fine shot which sailed over the bar for a fine point and a share of the spoils.
Next up in the group is a trip to Ballybeg to play St.
Saviours this coming Friday July 31st at 7pm.
SCORERS: Eoin O Neill (0-10), Greg Murphy (0-02), Tommy
Burtchaell (0-01), Darryl Griffin (0-01), Paul Martin (0-01), Naoise
MacCathmhaoil (0-01).

UNDER 15 HURLING:
Our U15 hurlers had a busy week, with two games in as many
days.
First up was a trip to Mount Sion to play the home side. Despite
making a shaky start, conceding a goal early on, points from Conor Haley, Shane
Purcell and Izaak Richards kept them in contention. Mount Sion’s forwards were
causing a few problems and a second goal arrived for them. However, Adam Aspel
replied with a goal to level the game up coming towards half time. But immediately,
Mount Sion replied with a third goal right on the half-time whistle to leave
them 3-05 to 1-06 ahead.
An early goal from Luigi, gave the team a huge lift, but
similar to the first-half, Mount Sion replied with a goal and began to take
over, adding further points to extend their lead. Despite scores from Conor and
Izzak, the home side ran out 5-10 to 2-08 winners.
It was off to play Ballygunner on Saturday last, and despite
missing a number of key players, the lads put in a great display to secure a
draw. Early scores from Conor Haley and Shane Purcell had the sides level,
while Kyle Daly in goal pulled off a number of crucial saves preventing
Ballygunner goals.
However, at the other end, Ferrybank struck two quick goals
from Shane had Ferrybank leading 2-03 to 0-05 at the break.
Things got better for the lads, as Conor Haley found himself
completely unmarked and drilled the ball to the net for goal number three.
Ballygunner, aided by the wind came back strongly, adding four unanswered
scores to reduce the gap. Points from Finn and Izaak kept the lads ahead.
However, entering the closing minutes, Ballygunner struck for a goal to level
it up. A point from Izaak edged the lads into the lead, but with time almost
up, Ballygunner equalised with a point. A good battling display from the team,
and no doubt will take a lot of confidence going into their next game this
coming Tuesday night July 28th, home to Sacred Heart at 7pm.
UNDER 13 HURLING:

trip to play Passage at 7pm. All support is welcomed on the night.
UNDER 12 HURLING:
Our U12 hurlers suffered their first defeat in this year’s
competition, going down narrowly to Tramore on a wet and windy night last
Friday.
Aided with the elements, Ferrybank lead by 2-02 to 1-0 at
the break, however the home side put on the pressure in the second-half and put
two quick goals away to run out narrow winners on a scoreline of 3-02 to 2-02.
Next up for the team is this coming Friday, July 31st
with a home game against Portlaw at 5:30pm.
