ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 15 HURLING:

Our U15 hurlers were narrowly defeated in their opening game in this year’s Déise in Dublin sponsored competition on a score line of 4-10 to 2-15 by Tramore last Friday night. A fine second-half display saw Ferrybank claw back a seven point half-time deficit to draw level, only to see Tramore score a late goal to claim the points.

With Izaak Richards opening the scoring with a point, Tramore came right back and began to cause problems for the defence by scoring two quick goals. However, Ferrybank kept in touch with points from Adam Aspel and Izaak, but a third Tramore goal extended the lead. Just before the half time break however, points from Caolan and Shane Purcell closed the gap to 3-09 to 0-11 at the break.

Ferrybank came more and more into it after the break, with points from Lochlann and the outstanding Adam Aspel. Midway through the half two quick goals followed, with Conor Haley scoring from close range, and a close range free from Izaak went into the net to bring the sides level. It looked like the home side would go on and win it from here, but a long ball into the Ferrybank defence saw a Tramore forward race clear and dispatch the sliothar to the net to put them three clear. Points from Conor and Shane reduced the gap to the minimum, but Ferrybank couldn’t get a late point that would have given them a deserved share of the spoils.

The lads have to dust themselves down as they have two quick games coming up this week. On Wednesday, July 22nd they play away to Mount Sion at 6pm, followed by another away trip to play Ballygunner at 2pm on Saturday, July 25th.

PANEL: Kyle Daly, Harry Flanagan, Paddy Mackey, Sean Akewami, Finn McGarrity, Adam Aspel (0-05), Conor Daly, Izaak Richards (1-05), Lochlann Flanagan(0-01), Dean Clarke, Jay Bagge, Shane Purcell (0-02), Ryan Hughes, Caolan MacCathmhaoil (0-01), Conor Haley (1-01), Sean Byrne.

JUNIOR HURLING:

No luck for the Junior hurlers last Friday night in their opening game as they were defeated by Butlerstown by 1-15 to 0-12. It was the final quarter that the home side pulled away, with Ferrybank crucially missing an early second-half penalty that would have put them five points clear.

The opening half was a tight affair, with the sides level numerous times. Points from Charlie McLoughlin, Luke Butler and Eoin O' Neill kept Ferrybank in the hunt. Before the half-time break, points from Sparky and Greg Murphy ensured an 0-08 to 0-06 lead.

A chance to extend the lead in the second-half wasn’t taken when Ferrybank missed a penalty. Slowly Butlerstown got a grip on the game, getting a lot of the ball, and scoring points in return. With the scores level at 0-10 each, Butlerstown got a goal which drove them on to win comfortably in the end. The lads are back in action next Saturday evening at 6pm with a home game against Tramore ‘B.

UNDER 12 HURLING:

Our U12 hurlers made a great start to their campaign last Saturday afternoon with a 5-04 to 0-07 win against Ballyduff Lower. Ballyduff were the better side in the opening half, and lead by four points at the break.

However, the second-half was dominated by the lads, and Jack Hoban lead the goal scoring with four fine goals, with Evan Mullally getting the fifth ensuring a good all round performance.

Next up for the team is a trip to play Tramore next Friday, July 24th at 7:30pm.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Our U13 hurlers are in action this coming Monday night July 20th at 7pm with a home game against Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower combined. Your support will be appreciated on the night.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

Our Intermediate hurlers begin their Championship campaign on Sunday, July 26th at 3:45pm in Dunhill where they play Portlaw. These sides also met last year, with that game ended in a draw, so no doubt another tough game is on the cards. Best of luck to the team.
