INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
The Intermediate hurlers were defeated in their final league game in this year’s Championship, going down to Ballygunner in Walsh Park on a score-line of 2-17 to 1-14. This was a disappointing display from the team, where the damage was done in the opening quarter, when, despite opening the scoring through Mark O' Brien, Ballygunner hit 1-07 without reply to open up a healthy lead.
Ferrybank rallied and hit five unanswered points through Mark, Sam Lawless and Neil O’ Sullivan to reduce the gap to four, but Ballygunner finished the half with four more points to lead 1-11 to 0-07 at the break.
Crucially, the opening stages of the second-half, Ferrybank hit four bad wides that could have brought them back right into the game, whereas Ballygunner took their scores at the other end. Points from Neil O’ Sullivan, Sam and Mark kept Ferrybank in touch, but Ballygunner got a second goal to put daylight between the sides. Oisin MacCathmhaoil and Luke Flynn had their goal bound shots hit the bar and deflected narrowly wide respectively, but John Ahern did the find the net, reacting quickly to a loose ball to narrow the gap at the final whistle.
The team have finished their league campaign, and must wait on other games still to be played in the group to find out whether they qualify for the quarter-finals or enter the play-offs which are scheduled to take place in late August.
Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the day.
JUNIOR HURLING:
Our Junior Hurlers were narrowly defeated by league leaders St. Pauls in Ferrybank last Friday night on a score-line of 3-12 to 2-14. The team were unlucky and deserved a share of the spoils, missing a number of chances late on. Goals in either half from Eimhin Burns and Marty Freeman (remember him!) kept the team in the hunt throughout the match, and with the game in the balance, St. Pauls were awarded a penalty, in which they scored a goal to put them two points clear. Despite a point from Charlie Mcloughlin, time ran out for the team. They have one match left in the league against Ballyduff Lower, with a date yet to be confirmed.
MINOR HURLING:
It was another tough night for the minor hurlers last Wednesday night, as they were defeated by Ballygunner B in their second game in this year’s championship. The team battled away on the night, but Ballygunner were superior in the scoring department where it mattered, and ran out worthy winners. Next up for the Minor team, is this coming Thursday night, August 1st with an away trip to play Stradbally at 7:30pm.
