ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
The Intermediate hurlers got their championship campaign off to a winning start in Dunhill last Saturday afternoon, defeating Butlerstown on a score-line of 2-10 to 0-15.
It was a case of a late late show from the team, as two late goals gave them a very fortunate win. With the breeze in Butlerstown’s favour, points from Cormac O' Driscoll and Mark O' Brien got Ferrybank off to a good start. Butlerstown came a lot more into it and hit nine unanswered points on the trot, and it could have been more, only for the Ferrybank defence working overtime to keep the score-line down, as Butlerstown launched attack after attack. Just before half-time, two further points from Mark and Cormac reduced the gap to 0-09 to 0-04 at the break.
Ferrybank started strongly in the second-half, with Mark O' Brien putting over three points, and shortly after two more points from Mark had us level. However, Butlerstown weathered the storm and put over two quick scores to regain the lead, and despite another point from Mark, Butlerstown were winning their fair share of the ball and put over three points to extend their lead, entering the final few minutes.
Ferrybank were awarded a free in, and a low Mark O' Brien shot ended up in the net to reduce the gap to a point in injury time. With possession crucial, Butlerstown worked the ball up the field and got another point to lead by two and looking good for the win. With time virtually up, a Cormac O' Driscoll free was floated into the square, and Sam Lawless who had battled hard all day, despite not been fully fit, timed his jump to perfection, and flicked the sliothar to the net, to give the team an unlikely win.
Despite being second best on the day, Ferrybank kept plugging away, and never gave up, even though missing a number of key players for the game, chiselled out the win. It could be a number of weeks now before the team plays their next game.

ANGELA BURNS MEMORIAL 10K:
Unfortunately, the 5th running of the Angela Burns Memorial 10k Fun Run/Walk, in association with Harvey Travel Gladstone St., had to be postponed due to the adverse weather last Sunday.
No doubt, there was a huge sense of disappointment, but with the large volumes of rain falling, conditions and visibility would have been to hazardous for all concerned.
Currently, we are hoping to re-schedule the event for an alternative date, and we will keep you posted regarding same. A huge thanks to all who had contributed to the 10k.
