ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

MINOR HURLING:
Our Minor hurlers were defeated by Ballyduff Upper last Saturday afternoon in the semi-final of the J.J. Kavanagh & Sons sponsored competition on a score-line of 3-15 to 2-10.
Despite being on top early on, Ferrybank failed to take their chances, allowing their opponents back into the game, and two goals just before the half-time break proved crucial. Ryan Tierney with three opening points had Ferrybank up and running, and a fine score from Maciez Tomczuk, had them three points clear. However, Ballyduff Upper slowly got into the game, taking their points when they got the chances and three unanswered scores had them level.
Ryan Tierney converted a penalty, after Charlie McLoughlin was upended in the area. That lead was short-lived, as minutes later. Ballyduff got in for a goal of their own. Eimhin Burns restored the lead with a point, but coming up to half time, Ballyduff Upper struck with two quick goals to have them leading 3-06 to 1-06 at the break.
With a few switches made at the break, Ferrybank tried hard to get back into the game, and with the accuracy of Ryan keeping them in the hunt, Ferrybank got a lifeline with a goal from Cody Griffin, following a well worked free from Ryan and Eimhin to reduce the gap to four points. Crucially, conceding some soft frees proved their downfall, as Ballyduff Upper capitalised on the chances they were given, and kept in control of the match, even though the lads kept battling away, three more unanswered points, saw Ballyduff run out winners.
The team gave it their all on the day, and a huge thanks to Paddy, Davey and Doxer for preparing the team all through this championship.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:
The Junior Footballers qualified for the final of the John J Murphy sponsored competition with a thrilling victory over a strong Ballyduff Lower team in Walsh Park last Sunday afternoon winning on a score-line of 1-13 to 1-12. The team had to endure a nervy few minutes towards the end, but overall, Ferrybank deserved their win, with great a work ethic and passion sealed their place in the final.
With Kevin Hurley cancelling out Ballyduff Lower’s opening score, Ballyduff began to dominate possession and put over two quick points. However, when the team settled down, the Ferrybank defence was holding firm and began setting up attacks for the tea. This was illustrated with Ferrybank putting over seven unanswered points in the remainder of the opening half. Tiarnan Morrissey was unlucky to see his close range shot on goal saved by the Ballyduff goalie, after he had weaved his way into the area, but with fine points from Sam Lawless, Darryl Griffin, Robbie Carew and Kevin Hurley, Ferrybank held an 0-8 to 0-03 lead at the break.
Ballyduff Lower started the second-half strongly, scoring an early goal to reduce the gap to a point, but Ferrybank began to move the ball up the field, and got rewarded with two excellent Kevin Hurley points to extend the lead to three. With the Ferrybank defence having to be vigilant at all times, Ballyduff kept pressing, and kept closing the gap, but another excellent team move saw Tommy Carew from wing back with a superb score, and then Luke Flynn scoring a great point from the outside of his boot by the side-line had Ferrybank three clear entering the final minutes.
Ballyduff Lower kept the pressure on, and levelled the game up with three points. With the game in the melting pot, the team were never going to accept defeat. Mark O' Brien went on one of his trade mark runs and hit a high ball into the Ballyduff area, where Sam Lawless was quick to react to the bouncing ball and palmed the ball into the empty net. Credit to Ballyduff, as they kept fighting to the end with two points, but time ran out for them, as Ferrybank held out.
A great display from the team, despite missing a number of key players on the day, the lads showed a great will to win attitude, getting some fantastic scores, keeping their heads and played as a team on the day.
