UNDER 14 HURLING:
Pride of place this week goes to our U14 hurlers who were
crowned Divison 4 County Champions last Saturday morning in Fraher Field, where
they overcame a spirited St. Saviours in a fine game of hurling.
Since their opening game in this year’s championship, the
team has come on in leaps and bounds, and now four months on have been rewarded
for all the hard graft put in, overcoming St. Saviours on a score-line of 4-08
to 4-06. It was a game of two halves, as Saviours dominated the opening period,
but Ferrybank hung in there, while the lads got on top in the second-half, and
crucially, that was the difference in the end.
Saviours had control of the opening half, but despite being
second best, the impressive Daniel Griffin scored two fine goals for the team, and
with points from Adam Aspel and Ruaidhri McGarrity, Ferrybank only trailed by
2-04 to 2-02. With Sean Heffernan, going off injured, Lochlann Flanagan stepped
in, and did a fine job in defence.
Following a few harsh words at the break, the lads came out
all guns blazing, with Izaak switching to the forward line and Ruadhri into
midfield. Minutes later, this switch paid dividend, as Izaak got goal number
three to put the lads into the lead, and this inspired the team, with the
outstanding Kyle Daly in goal pulling off a couple of vital saves, and further points
from Shane Purcell, Adam and Ruaidhri, had the game level.
With five minutes remaining, Shane Purcell scored goal
number four from an impossible angle, hammering the ball to the net. The
defence had to with stand some Saviours’ pressure, with Odhran, Paddy, Sean and
Conor holding firm, the lads held out for a great win.
Captain Ruaidhri McGarrity collected the trophy on behalf of
the team, and, as stated, all the hard work was now rewarded. Thanks to Brian
Richards, Conor McGarrity and John Heffernan for looking after the team all
year, and having them well prepared on the day.
TEAM: Kyle Daly, Odhran Power, Sean Heffernan, Paddy Mackey,
Sean Adeyemi, Conor Daly, Izaak Richards, Jay Bagge, Ruaidhri McGarrity, Caolan
MacCathmhaoil, Adam Aspel, Shane Purcell, Daniel Griffin, Jake Butler, Conor
Haley, Lochlann Flanagan, Fionn McGarrity.
The team went back to the Waterford Golf Club for a well-deserved
meal, and a special word of thanks to Helen and her staff at the Golf Club for
the excellent food laid on for the players and mentors.
INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:
No joy for the Ferrybank Intermediate Camogie side last
Saturday afternoon, where they were defeated by Dungarvan in the Hooper Doolan
Insurance sponsored final in Carriganore.
The girls never got going, especially in the opening half,
as Dungarvan took their scores, and a scrappy opening goal set them on their
way.
Ferrybank improved in the second-half, and despite a Niamh
Ahearne goal, Dungarvan had built up a lead that they weren’t going to
relinquish, and ran out worthy winners on a score-line of 2-11 to 1-06.
Despite this defeat, the girls can be proud of their achievements
this year, they put in a huge commitment throughout the season, and no effort
can be faulted.
Thanks to Paul Martin, Shiner Ahearne and Donnacha Larkin
for looking after the team, and preparing throughout during the season.
MINOR HURLING:
Ferrybank’s Minor Hurlers qualified for the semi-finals of
the Division 3 competition with a thrilling victory over a spirited Ardmore
side in Ferrybank last Saturday afternoon, winning on a scoreline, after extra-time,
3-21 to 3-19.
This was a tough game throughout, with no quarter given, and
it was only in extra-time, that the fitness levels paid dividends for
Ferrybank. The opening half was evenly contested with Eimhin Burns and Ryan
Tierney up front scoring some fine points. The same two players combined for
the opening goal, with Eimhin slotting the ball home. However, just before
half-time, Ferrybank were reduced a player, following a harsh dismissal, and
with this, Ardmore capitalised with a goal of their own to lead by a point at
the break.
Another quick Ardmore goal early in the second-half, had
them in control, but Nathon Carton quickly changed the game with two goals
inside a minute to level it up. With the game there for the taking, the sides couldn’t
be separated, and extra time was needed.
Early in the opening period, Cian Martin in the goal, pulled
off a top class save, when it looked Ardmore were in for goal number three, and
Stephen O' Kane scoring a fine individual point to nudge the home-side ahead.
With Ferrybank being driven on by Ben Fitz, Naoise and
Stephen, the lads began to get the upper hand. The introduction of Glen Power,
Aiden Humphries, Charlie Mc Laughlin and Trevor Madigan began to make a
difference and Ferrybank built up a five point lead and never looked back.
Ardmore replied with a goal of their own near the end of
extra-time to reduce the gap, but the lads held on for a superb win. Credit to
both sides for an excellent game, that had all the supporters enthralled, and
pity there had to be a loser, but Ferrybank progress to the semi-finals,
probably in a fortnights time, where there opponents have yet to be confirmed.
