JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
It wasn't to be for the Ferrybank Junior hurlers last Saturday afternoon in Dunhill, as they went down narrowly to Dungarvan on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-12 in the County Final. Despite a strong finish from the team, Dungarvan held on to claim the county title.
Early scores from Sparky and Fionn McGarrity got the team off to a good start, before Dungarvan replied with a point. A second point from Sparky extended the lead, and the same player almost got in for a goal, when he received a pass from Tiernan Morrissey only to see his shot saved by the Dungarvan goalkeeper. With that goal chance gone abegging, Dungarvan took their chance of a goal when a bullet of a shot drilled to the top corner of the net from an acute angle, giving Cian Martin no chance in the goal.
With both sides trading points, again, thanks to Sparky, Ferrybank got a great goal when a fine pass from John Collins to Fionn McGarrity, who evaded a couple of defenders, and hit a super shot to the corner of the net for a fine goal. That goal sprung Dungarvan into a reply, and they hit three unanswered points before the break, to edge them into a 1-05 to 1-04 lead at the break.
Dungarvan with the breeze, made a quick start to the half, with three points to push the lead out to four, but Ferrybank quickly replied with points from Alex Kinsella and Sparky. Ferrybank kept battling away and the defence held firm against a dangerous Dungarvan forward line. A badly needed score from Eimhin Burns brought them back to three. Moments later however, a Dungarvan attack saw an attempted point dropped short which deceived Cian Martin in the goal and the ball ended up in the net.
Nevertheless, with a seven-point deficit, the lads didn't throw in the towel, and Sparky slotted over three points to bring the gap back to four as the game entered the final few minutes. Moments later a long ball into the Dungarvan was gathered by Fionn McGarrity, whose shot was saved by the goalkeeper, and the loose ball fell nicely for Sparky who scored from close range to reduce the gap to a point. With possession now vital, Dungarvan got the loose ball, and set up an attack which was converted for a point to extend it out to two. That sealed the win, as the whistle sounded, and overall, the team put in a huge effort, crucially they will look back at a few missed chances that were not taken. However, it was a great season for the Juniors, and they can take plenty of satisfaction from their campaign.
Special word of thanks to Cian, Seamie, and Marty, for overseeing the team, and despite losing a few players along the way, it paved the way for others to come in and enjoy the experience. Thanks to all who came along on the day and supported the team in Dunhill.
