ALL-COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE:
The Senior hurlers travelled to An Rinn last Saturday to play the home side in the Kearney Catering All-County Hurling League. Following a good game of hurling, the spoils were shared on a scoreline of 2-21 each.
It was the home team that made most of the running in the initial few minutes scoring four of the opening five points, with Mark O’Brien scoring Ferrybank’s opener from a placed ball. Ferrybank levelled up the game moments later, when Ruaidhri McGarrity picked up the ball from the side line, and worked his way into the area, before placing the sliothar into the net from a tight angle. Both sides traded points, with Mark O’Brien scoring some fine points from acute angles, and he was unlucky not to score a second goal, when fine build up play by the team saw his close-range shot saved by the goalie and the expense of a '65 which was converted. An Rinn finished the half better scoring four points to edge into a 0-14 to 1-07 lead.
Ferrybank improved a lot in the second half, with four quick points split between Mark O’Brien and Neil O’Sullivan. An Rinn were then awarded a penalty which was dispatched, but the lads replied with Ruaidhri McGarrity, Caolan Mac Cathmhaoil, and Neil O’ Sullivan to put them back into the lead. A second An Rinn goal looked like the winner, but almost immediately, Neil O’Sullivan picked up a loose ball, and drilled a low shot to the net to level it up. A good second half from the team, who were short a few players on the night.
Next up is St. Molleran’s on Tuesday, May 20th at 7:30pm.
CAMOGIE:
The Ferrybank Adult Camogie side qualified for the League Final with a good win over a gallant Gaillltír B last Sunday afternoon winning on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-03. The team got off to a good start with points from Roisin Oates and Valerie O’Brien, but Gaillltír replied with a goal to level it up. Despite this set back, Ferrybank continued to create chances, and further scores from Roisin and Valerie ensured a 0-07 to 1-01 lead.
Ferrybank started well in the second half, and had a few goal scoring chances only to find the Gaillltír goalie in top form. However, the Gaillltír net was finally breached when a long ball in, was caught by Aine, who duly dispatched the ball to the net. A second goal soon arrived, with again Aine in the right place, scoring from close range. Points from Grainne Heffernan, and Lydia kept the scoreboard ticking over. In the closing moments, a shot from Meagan sailed into the net for a fine goal. Credit to Gaillltír who kept battling away to the end. A good win for the team, who worked well throughout the game, playing a nice style of camogie, and getting rewarded with some nice scores. With a lot of young players in the squad, the team is beginning to progress in a nice direction. They now go on to play An Rinn in the final, with the date, venue, and time yet to be confirmed. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team.
