ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

SENIOR HURLING:

Ferrybank’s Senior hurlers were defeated by Fourmilewater in the Senior Hurling Championship last Saturday on a scoreline of 2-20 to 0-17. In fairness to the team, they put in a battling performance, despite a shaky start, in which they trailed by eight points, but clawed it back to two points at the start of the second half, only for Fourmilewater to pull away in the closing stages, and rounding it off with a late goal.

Fourmilewater got off to a quick start with a goal in the opening three minutes, and while Mark O’Brien got Ferrybank on the board with a point, Fourmilewater were sharper in attack, and put the Ferrybank defence under pressure , and four points on the spin put them seven points clear. Two points from Mark O’Brien kept the team in the hunt, and they began to settle down, gaining a bit more possession, and a fine pass from Robbie Carew found MJ Sutton who put over a fine score.

Three unanswered points soon arrived with Ruaidhri McGarrity and Caolan MacCathmhaoil in quick succession, and a second on the night from Ruaidhri McGarrity on his left side closed the gap to four points. Fourmilewater put over a point to extend their lead, but the lads finished the first-half strong with Neil O’Sullivan slotting over two points, and a long-range effort from Caolan MacCathmhaoil left it 1-11 to 0-10 at the break.

Ferrybank got off to a quick start to the second half with MJ Sutton spotting Ruaidhri McGarrity and he made no mistake with his third on the night. A couple of minutes later, Neil O’Sullivan got his third point with a fine score from a tight angle to leave two between the sides. However, Fourmilewater weathered the storm and hit three points to open a gap. Ferrybank then had a great chance of a goal when a shot from MJ Sutton saw the Fourmilewater goalkeeper save his attempt, and scramble the ball away to safety. As the game went on, Fourmilewater began to show their experience and took their points, despite the best efforts of Mark O’Brien (4). With time almost up, a mistake in defence saw Fourmilewater’s Sean Walsh gather the ball, and his goalbound shot seemed destined for the top corner of the net, but Jo-Jo O’Driscoll in the goal pulled off a fantastic save, however the ball was re-cycled, where the defence failed to clear, and this time the Fourmilewater player made no mistake from close range to complete the scoring on the night.

Overall, this was a battling team performance who competed for long stages in the game, taking some fine scores throughout the match, but Fourmilewater showed their experience towards the end of the game. It’s the playoffs next for Ferrybank who now have been drawn to play Clonea next Saturday in Walsh Park at 2:30pm. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the night.

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior hurlers bowed out of this year’s competition after being defeated by Portlaw last Thursday in the quarter finals of the Junior hurling championship. No doubt, it was a frustrating evening for the team, as they failed to take a number of scoring chances, and, in the end, were left to rue those misses.

Both sides exchanged early points with Eimhin Burns scoring for Ferrybank, but Portlaw hit the next three points to open up a lead. The lads created a number of chances; including a goal chance where Jay Bagge’s shot was saved by the Potlaw goalkeeper and cleared away. Another point by Eimhin Burns closed the gap, and moments later, a long ball by Macieck Tomczuk found Greg Murphy, who passed to Eimhin Burns and he made no mistake from close range with a fine goal to edge the team ahead. Portlaw regained the lead with two points, and right on the stroke of half time, a long free from Shane O’Sullivan was only half cleared, where Cian Martin was first to react and steered the ball to the net, to ensure a two point lead.

A quick point from Jay Bagge early in the second half extended the lead. However, a few bad wides were beginning to add up, and Portlaw took advantage by hitting three points to draw level. Moments later, the homeside got in for a goal. Ferrybank were awarded a penalty, when Jay Bagge was upended in the square, but Eimhin Burns shot went wide, but two quick points from John Collins, and Shane O’Sullivan narrowed the gap. With the game there for the taking, further scores from Eimhin Burns and Jack Keogh, who saw his rasping shot just go over, only left a point in it entering the closing minutes. However, a mistake in the defence saw the Portlaw forward take advantage and put the ball into the net, that effectively finished the game and they saw it out with three more points.

The team tried hard on the night, and missing a couple of players proved costly, and having plenty of scoring opportunities that went a begging. Thanks to Tommy Carew and Alex Kinsella for looking after the team on the night. Eimhin Burns (1-3), Cian (1-00), Jay (0-01), John Collins (0-01), Jack Keogh (0-01), Shane O’Sullivan (0-01).

MINOR HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s qualified for the semi-final stage of this year’s championship with a thrilling comeback over a gallant Tramore side last Wednesday, thus maintaining their unbeaten run in the competition.

It was a game of two halves, as Tramore dominated the opening half, and led by eight points at the break, but no doubt a few strong words by the selectors saw the lads knuckle down and run out four point winners on a scoreline of 3-14 to 2-13.

Tramore had the better of the opening exchanges and scored an early goal when some good build up play saw a low shot drilled into the corner of the net, giving Tom M in the goal no chance. Two points from Conor Haley kept the lads in the hunt, but Tramore were sharper and quicker to the ball, finding men with ease, and putting over points to extend the lead. Badly needed points from Sam R, and Conor Haley kept the scoreboard ticking over. A few moments later, Evan burst through the Tramore defence, only to see his close range shot batted away by the Tramore goalkeeper. The forwards were finding it tough going, as the Tramore defence did not give much away, and with the Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s defence under pressure, Tom M pulled off a crucial save to prevent goal number two just before the break. The lads were glad to hear the whistle with Tramore leading 1-10 to 0-05.

No doubt, the half time team talk certainly worked, as the team came out with a different attitude, with four quick points from Conor Haley to reduce the gap. Things got even better for the team, when the impressive Josh J broke through the Tramore defence and scored a fine goal to leave just two between them. The Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s defence had tightened up considerably, with Lee K, Senan W, Harry, and Tadhg giving little away. Another two points from Conor Haley reduced the gap to a minimum. With the game there for the taking, Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s hit the front with a goal from Mark F, who was first to react from a loose ball to put it to the corner. No doubt, Tramore were rocked, but moments later they got a lifeline, when they were awarded a penalty following some holding, and it was duly dispatched to the net, giving Tom no chance, and putting them a point up.

Credit to the lads however, as they kept battling, led by Josh, and two points from Conor Haley saw them reclaim the lead. With time running down, a third goal arrived when a long range free from Harry sailed all the way to the net. Conor Haley’s accuracy from the frees finished out the scoring from the sideline to leave them four point winners.

A good team win overall, especially in the second half, when they played and worked hard for the team, and they now move onto this coming Wednesday, August 7th at 7:30pm with a game against Erin’s Own in Ferrybank. Scores Conor Haley (0-13), Mark F (1-00), Josh (1-00), Harry (1-00), Sam (0-01).

CAMOGIE NEWS:

The Ferrybank U8 and U10 team travelled to Roanmore last Saturday to take on the hosts and Butlerstown in a blitz. With 40 players reporting for duty, including seven new debutants. On a good morning for the matches the girls got down to business, in both ages, playing three games each, and giving excellent displays throughout the field, with work rate, energy, and scoring to the fore.

Again, thanks to the coaches whose hard work is paying dividends, and the teams are beginning to reap the rewards. Thanks to Roanmore for the invite on the day and to the parents for their support on the day.
