ABP sponsored Ferybank GAA Weekly Notes

MINOR HURLING:

Pride of place this week goes to the Ferrybank Minor Hurlers on reaching the Division 2 County Final, with a thrilling two-point win over a gallant Tramore side last Wednesday in Ballybeg on a scoreline of 3-11 to 3-09. It was a game of two halves, with the Seasiders in control in the opening half, and they opened up an eight-point lead. However, the lads put in a rousing second-half to claim the win, and more importantly book their place in the final.

Aided with the breeze in the opening half, Tramore started the brighter with the opening scores, but Ferrybank were almost in for a goal, only for Jacob Richards to see his shot saved. Tramore replied with a goal to extend the lead. A pointed free from Conor Haley settled the team, but Tramore hit three unanswered scores to move further ahead. Further chances of points went a begging for Ferrybank, but a point from Jacob Richards eased the pressure. However, moments before half-time, some hesitant defending left Tramore in for their second goal, which left the half-time score 2-06 to 0-04 in Tramore's favour.

Ferrybank came out in the second-half with all guns blazing, and started to eat into the deficit with a goal from Jacob Richards, who hammered the ball into the net from close range on his left-hand side. Further points from Conor Haley, Finn McGarrity and Jacob Richards closed the gap. Things got better moments later, when Adam Aspel struck the ball on the ground, and it flew into the Tramore net for a fine goal.

Confidence began to soar in the team now, and they began to edge ahead with more points. A third goal soon arrived, when the excellent Jay Bagge caught the ball, ran at speed through the Tramore defence, and batted the ball to the net for a superb individual goal. Six points clear, Ferrybank kept working hard, but Tramore refused to give up, and got a lifeline with a goal, when a lineball went into the area, and the unmarked Tramore player made no mistake from close range giving Kyle Daly no chance. The defence was working hard with Paddy Mackey and Harry Flanagan marshalling the troops, and giving nothing away. With time almost up, Tramore had one last chance when a close-range free was deflected over by Kyle Daly for a point and, following the puck out, the final whistle sounded.

A great win for the team, who had to dig deep throughout the game, but a fine second-half tipped the game their way. It is now onto the final, where they play Clonea this coming Thursday, August 31st at 8pm at the SETU Arena, Carriganore. No doubt, support will be crucial, and we would ask everyone associated with the club to come out and shout the lads on, as the team and management have put in a huge effort throughout the season.

Best of luck to Davy Atkins, Ryan Tierney, Robbie Carew, and indeed the panel.

TEAM: Kyle Daly, Sean Byrne, Paddy Mackey, Sean Adeyemi, Conor Daly, Harry Flanagan, Lochlann Flanagan, Mark Flanagan, Fionn McGarrity (0-01), Adam Aspel (1-00), Conor Haley (0-07), Evan Mullally, Jacob Richards (1-02), Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Jay Bagge (1-01), Dean Clarke, Conor Morrissey, Max O’ Sullivan.

PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

The Intermediate hurlers qualified for the semi-finals of the inaugural Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship with a hard fought win over a spirited Tramore side last Friday at the SETU Arena in Carriganore on a scoreline of 1-15 0-16.

The team got off to a good start with an early goal from Darryl Griffin, when his shot sailed over the Tramore goalkeeper and into the corner of the net. Tramore soon replied with four of the next five points to go back into the lead, with Mark O’ Brien scoring a point in between the Tramore scores.

Ferrybank were creating a few goal chances, but did not take the opportunities they had. However, the hard working Ruadhri McGarrity got his reward with a fine point. With space at a premium, both sides were looking to create openings, and points were exchanged with Neil O’ Sullivan and Mark O’ Brien supplying the scores to once again level it up. Coming up to the break, the excellent Sam Lawless popped up from the half-back line to fire over a point to ensure it was level at the break at 1-06 to 0-09.

Ferrybank started the second-half well and had a couple of scoring chances to open up a lead, which they failed to take. From there on, the sides traded points with scores for Ferrybank from Luke Flynn, Mark O’ Brien (3) and Neil O’ Sullivan (2).

Tramore edged ahead with five minutes remaining, but Ferrybank, crucially finished the better when it mattered with points from Ryan Tierney, Mark O’ Brien (2) and Darryl Griffin, whose score was the insurance point to seal the win. Credit to the defence who saw out the final few moments, and throughout the game, as they gave little away in terms of goal chances to Tramore.

It’s onto the semi-final next, where Knockanore Shamrocks will provide the opposition. Date, venue and time is yet to be decided, so please keep an eye on our social media platforms.

INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:

Our Intermediate Camogie side were defeated by Dungarvan in their opening game in this year’s championship. The girls from the west proved too strong, particularly in the second-half, following a close enough opening half.

Early points were exchanged between the sides with Chloe and Niamh Ahearne on target for the team. Dungarvan hit the next four unanswered points to open up a gap, but two quick points from Niamh Ahearne reduced the gap. The Ferrybank defence in that half gave little away in terms of goalscoring chances, as Dungarvan kept the scoreboard ticking over with two more points. Despite another Niamh Ahearne score, the girls trailed 0-08 to 0-05 at the break.

Dungarvan got on top in the second-half, and began to get quick points to open up a clear lead, as the girls found it hard to get anything in the visitors defence line. As the game wore on, Dungarvan picked off a couple of late scores to run out 0-17 to 0-06 winners.

Next up for the team is this coming Tuesday, August 29th with a home game against Lismore at 6:45pm, and once again all support will be welcomed on the night.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s team were defeated in the final group game last Monday, going down to St. Patrick’s on a scoreline of 1-10 to 2-02. It’s now onto the knockout stages now, and the semi-final action is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 5th against St. Patrick’s at 6:45pm in Carriganore.

UNDER 14 CAMOGIE:

No luck for the U14 Camogie side last Thursday as they made the trip to play Cappoquin in the semi-finals. The opening half was a close affair, and goals from Amelia and Cliodhna kept the girls in the hunt. However, a strong second-half from the homeside proved too much as they tagged on a few scores to run out worthy winners.

Credit to the team, as they battled all the way to the end, but it wasn’t to be.

UNDER 6 & 7:

Our U6 & U7 teams made the trip to Butlerstown last Saturday to take part in a blitz. Another good morning, weather-wise, the teams got down to business, and put in a great effort throughout, displaying plenty of work rate and effort. Huge thanks to the mentors, and trainers for putting in a lot of time with the team.

Plenty of refreshments on the day as well. In conjunction with the Family Fun Day, hurling on the greens will take place on Tuesday, September 5th at the Beeches housing estate, Wednesday September 6th at Leacha Ard, Abbey Road, and Bellfield Thursday September 7th. Another busy weekend for some of the players who were representing the county. Well done to Mark Flanagan who was part of the victorious Waterford Under 14 hurling team that defeated Wexford in the final of the Sonny Walsh tournament in Gracedieu. Well done also to Sean Adeyemi, Conor Haley, and Fionn McGarrity who were in Dublin playing with the Under 16 development squad.

LAST MAN STANDING:

The club will host a Last Man Standing fundraiser competition, with the funds going towards the new clubhouse / community development. A nice prize awaits of €500 to the winner, if you can predict the winner each week of the football matches in the English Premier league. Round 1 begins on Friday, September 1st, where you will make one selection, and if that team wins, you move on week by week.

EXAMINATIONS RESULTS:

Well done to everyone in the club who received their Leaving Cert results last Friday. Hopefully they got the results they hoped for, and best of luck for the future ahead.

TEAM 100:

With the playing season in full flow, many people will have seen the progression of the new clubhouse development. Phase 2 (shell and core) is nearing completion, and we are preparing for Phase 3 (fit out) with your help. This is the biggest capital development project in the history of Ferrybank GAA club. With the recent upsurge in the underage section, this development will benefit these juvenile members and indeed the wider community far into the future.

This project will deliver a new building, consisting of modern dressing rooms, and a community orientated multipurpose rooms for all.

Team 100 has delivered numerous projects for Ferrybank GAA club in the past, including our hurling alley, running track, ball stoppers, pitch drainage, car park tarmacking, and the initial enabling works for this new project. We would ask everyone associated with the club; parents, supporters and players to join Team 100, and contribute to the continued development of the club and community.

Joining Team 100 involves paying a €25 per month standing-order (€6.25 per week) to the club, which covers your full-membership for the year. This works out as the price of a few cups of coffee/tea a week.

Please talk to any member, mentor, trainer or e-mail ferrybankgaa@gmail.com for an application form to join Team 100.

DEVELOPMENT SITE OFF LIMITS:

Once again, we would like to remind everyone that our new clubhouse / community development is off limits for entry. No one should enter beyond the fencing under any circumstances. This is still a building site.
