ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

TEAM 100:

With the playing season in full flow, many people will have seen the progression of the new clubhouse development. Phase 2 (shell and core) is nearing completion, and we are preparing for Phase 3 (fit out) with your help. This is the biggest capital development project in the history of Ferrybank GAA club. With the recent upsurge in the underage section, this development will benefit these juvenile members and indeed the wider community far into the future.

This project will deliver a new building, consisting of modern dressing rooms, and a community orientated multipurpose rooms for all.

Team 100 has delivered numerous projects for Ferrybank GAA club in the past, including our hurling alley, running track, ball stoppers, pitch drainage, car park tarmacking, and the initial enabling works for this new project. We would ask everyone associated with the club; parents, supporters and players to join Team 100, and contribute to the continued development of the club and community.

Joining Team 100 involves paying a €25 per month standing-order (€6.25 per week) to the club, which covers your full-membership for the year. This works out as the price of a few cups of coffee/tea a week.

Please talk to any member, mentor, trainer or e-mail ferrybankgaa@gmail.com for an application form to join Team 100.

PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

The Intermediate hurlers registered their first win in this year’s Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship defeating Ballysaggart on a scoreline of 3-18 to 0-13 in Dungarvan last Friday.

Going into this game, both sides were depleted with a number of players unavailable, but a good second-half performance from Ferrybank saw them claim the spoils. Aided with a breeze in the opening half, Ballysaggart made a good start, with the opening four points, before Mark O’ Brien halved the deficit with two quick points. Ballysaggart enjoyed more of the play and extended the lead with another two points. Slowly, Ferrybank began to get much more on the ball, and points from Ryan Tierney and Mark O’ Brien (2), reduced the gap to one. The opening goal arrived soon after, when a fine well-worked move, which involved a number of players, saw the ball played into Robbie Carew, who sided-stepped his marker, before placing the ball into the roof of the net for a great finish. That goal lifted Ferrybank, and further points from Darryl Griffin and Mark O’ Brien edged them back into the lead. Just before the break, a crucial second goal arrived for Ferrybank, when Darryl Griffin played in Kevin Hurley, who at the second attempt made no mistake from close range, which ensured a 2-07 to 0-09 lead at the break.

Five unanswered points at the start of the second-half opened up a nine point lead. However, Ballysaggart quickly replied with three of their own. Any chance of a Ballysaggart comeback were soon diminished, as further points from the busy Mark O’ Brien and Robbie Carew extended the lead. Moments later, a third goal arrived when another good move from the team saw Luke Flynn finish it off with a low shot to the net.

Ferrybank’s defence gave very little away, and were determined to keep a clean sheet on the night, and Cormac O’ Driscoll had to be on his toes, as he deflected a goal bound shot over the bar. A couple more points closed out the win for Ferrybank.

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior Hurlers were well defeated in their latest group match on a damp, misty night in Ferrybank, going down to a very strong Roanmore team. Despite opening up a 0-05 to 0-01 lead, thanks to points from Eoin O' Neill (3) and John Collins (2), Roanmore took over from the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals in the meantime, before Shane O’ Sullivan replied with a point just before half-time.

Things didn’t get any better for the homeside, as Roanmore kept the scoreboard ticking over with a number of points. The hard working John Collins got rewarded with a goal from close range, just before the end of the game, but the visitors were too strong in all departments on the night.

MINOR HURLING:

Our Minor hurlers suffered their first defeat in this year’s championship last Wednesday on a scoreline of 3-22 to 3-14 to a sharper Clonea side. The visitors hit 1-07 without reply either side of half time, which put them in control of the match, and they never looked back. Despite a late rally from Ferrybank, the lads fell short at the full-time whistle.

Ferrybank made an excellent start with two goals from Jay Bagge in the opening five minutes, but Clonea weathered the early storm, and replied with a goal of their own, when a long range free was doubled on and into the back of the net. The lads hit back with points from Jacob Richards, Fionn McGarrity, Conor Haley, and Jay Bagge to open a four-point lead. Nevertheless, right on the stroke of half-time, Clonea struck a blow when a line ball into the area was deflected into the Ferrybank net to leave it 2-08 to 2-07 at the break.

That goal lifted Clonea, and they hit seven unanswered points at the start of the second-half, as their forwards were causing the defence a few problems with their pace and movement. Points from Conor Haley (2) and Evan Mullally reduced the gap. Yet, the Clonea defence gave very little away, setting up attacks for their forwards, which they duly obliged with points. Despite a few positional changes, the lads got a lifeline in the closing minutes, when Fionn McGarrity was on hand to blast the loose ball to the net to reduce it to three points. Another score from Conor Haley got it back to two. However, Clonea did not panic, and quickly replied with a third goal to seal the win, followed by two more points to close out the match.

Despite this defeat, the team have qualified for the semi-finals, and they still have one game remaining in the group stages, which takes place next Wednesday, August 16th, home to Brickey Rangers at 7pm.

Scorers: Conor Haley (0-10), Jay Bagge (2-01), Fionn McGarrity (1-01), Jacob Richards and Evan Mullally (0-01) each.
