ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

ALL IRELAND CAMOGIE FINAL:

There is plenty of excitement in the City and County this week and indeed in Ferrybank GAA & Camogie Club, as we would like to wish our own Iona Heffernan and the Waterford Senior Camogie team the very best of luck in Sunday’s All-Ireland Hurling Final against Cork in Croke Park.

No doubt, plenty of hard work, dedication, and commitment has gone into the team over the last 6-8 months, and results have shown how much progress has been made by the team. Iona has been involved with the team for the last number of years, and hopefully the service she has given in the number 3 jersey will be fully rewarded on Sunday evening. All going well, Iona and the team will be bringing home the O'Duffy Cup. The best of luck to everyone involved.

The club are planning to run a Bus to and from Croke park on Sunday, and if you need any further details, please contact Joanne on 087-6207529. We hope to see many people from the Parish and the club at the match, and thanks to all the volunteers for contributing, from providing the ladders in putting up the bunting and flags around the ground last Saturday morning.

TEAM 100:

With the playing season in full flow, many people will have seen the progression of the new clubhouse development. Phase 2 (shell and core) is nearing completion, and we are \preparing for Phase 3 (fit out) with your help. This is the biggest capital development project in the history of Ferrybank GAA club. With the recent upsurge in the underage section, this development will benefit these juvenile members and indeed the wider community far into the future.

This project will deliver a new building, consisting of modern dressing rooms, and a community orientated multipurpose rooms for all.

Team 100 has delivered numerous projects for Ferrybank GAA club in the past, including our hurling alley, running track, ball stoppers, pitch drainage, car park tarmacking, and the initial enabling works for this new project. We would ask everyone associated with the club; parents, supporters and players to join Team 100, and contribute to the continued development of the club and community.

Joining Team 100 involves paying a €25 per month standing-order (€6.25 per week) to the club, which covers your full-membership for the year. This works out as the price of a few cups of coffee/tea a week.

Please talk to any member, mentor, trainer or e-mail ferrybankgaa@gmail.com for an application form to join Team 100.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

Our Intermediate hurlers were narrowly defeated by Ballygunner in the opening game of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship on Sunday at a misty Kill on a scoreline of 0-19 to 2-12.

Failure to convert a few scoring chances, particularly in the second-half, when the game was in the balance proved crucial at the end. Ferrybank made a good start racing into a 0-05 to 0-01 lead thanks to scores from Mark O’ Brien (0-04) and Neil O’ Sullivan (0-01). However, Ballygunner clawed their way back with four unanswered points to level it up. With a lot of slipping and sliding, both teams found it hard to keep their feet on the ground. Points were exchanged with another score from Mark O’ Brien. Moments later, just before the half-time whistle, a fine pass from Mark O’ Brien slipped in the on-rushing MJ Sutton who planted the ball to the net to regain the lead. The Ferrybank defence gave little away in conceding any goal chance, but two frees conceded just before half-time were duly converted by Ballygunner to ensure a 0-10 to 1-06 lead at the break.

Two further points from Mark O’ Brien levelled up the game, but crucially, Ballygunner hit five points on the trot, while Ferrybank hit a few bad wides. Midway through the second-half, Ferrybank got a second goal, when a loose ball fell to MJ Sutton who pulled on it first time, and his bullet of a shot flew into the net for a superb goal. This seemed to rejuvenate the team, and points from Mark O’ Brien (0-02), and Ruadhri McGarrity put them into the lead with five minutes to go. However, Ballygunner quickly responded with three points (two from frees) to lead going into injury time, and despite a point from Mark O’ Brien to reduce the gap, time ran out for the team.

Regardless of this defeat, the team will have learnt a lot from the game, and no doubt will hope to iron out the mistakes they made, which proved crucial, and hopefully will have a few players available for selection as it’s a trip to Leamybrien this coming Friday, August 5th at 7:30pm, where Clashmore/Kinsalebeg provide the opposition. Scorers: Mark O’ Brien (0-10), MJ Sutton (2-00), Neil O’ Sullivan (0-01), Ruadhri McGarrity (0-01).

MINOR HURLING:

Ferrybank Minor hurlers played out an exciting draw with Dungarvan last Wednesday in Ferrybank, where a last gasp goal for the visitors ensured they went back home with a point. On a damp night for action, both sides served up a good game for the large crowd to view, with both sides creating plenty of chances, but in the end, a draw was probably a fair result.

Dungarvan opened the scoring with a point, but Ferrybank hit back with the next five points through Caolan MacCathmhaoil (0-02) and Jay Bagge (0-03) to open a four-point lead. However, Dungarvan began to settle and hit the next five points to go into the lead by one. Ferrybank came back with a badly needed score, which resulted in a goal scored by Caolan MacCathmhaoil, who reacted quickest to a loose ball, and batted it into the net. Dungarvan’s forward line began to cause a few problems, with Kyle Daly pulling off two good saves to keep his goal intact. Just before half-time, points were exchanged by both sides, with Conor Haley (0-02), ensuring a 1-07 to 0-08 lead at the break.

Little was to separate the sides at the start of the second-half, with points from Jay Bagge, Conor Haley, and Caolan MacCathmhaoil keeping Ferrybank ahead. Dungarvan began to create goal chances, but another great save from Kyle Daly prevented a goal, where in defence Harry Flanagan, Sean Adeyemi and Sean Byrn were outstanding. Ferrybank got a second goal, when a long-range free wasn’t cleared properly by the Dungarvan defence and Adam Aspel was on hand to bundle the ball over the line to extend the lead by five points. Again, Dungarvan refused to go away and quickly hit three unanswered points to reduce the gap. With the game entering the closing stages, another long ball into the Dungarvan area was not dealt with and Dean Clarke was on hand to score a goal from close range. Straight from the puck out, Dungarvan attacked and a low shot was saved by Kyle Daly, but the Dungarvan forward was on hand to put the sliothar into the net. A fine point on the run by Finn McGarrity pushed the lead out to three points in favour of Ferrybank, and with time almost up, Dungarvan worked the ball up the field, and a low shot ended up in the Ferrybank net to give the visitors the levelling score 3-11 to 2-14 at full-time.

Next up for the minors is Wednesday, August 3rd with a trip to play group leaders Tramore at 7:30pm. Scorers: Caolan MacCathmhaoil (1-03), Jay Bagge (0-04), Conor Haley (0-03), Adam Aspel (1-00), Dean Clarke (1-00), Finn McGarrity (0-01).

UNDER 13 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviours side recorded a good win last Monday in Gracedieu against De La Salle winning on a scoreline of 3-04 to 1-04. This vital win keeps the team second in the group, and next up is a trip to Clashmore/Kinsalebeg on Monday, August 7th at 7pm.

Our Under 8 hurlers are back in action on Monday at 6pm where they play Roanmore. Training as normal on Wednesday at 6pm, and on Saturday morning it is a return to the big ball, as they play St. Saviours at 10am in a football challenge.

UNDER 6:

Our Under 6 hurlers made the trip to Butlerstown last Saturday to play the homeside. Plenty of action took place, as both sides showed plenty of skill on the field, which was enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to Sean and Clodagh for organising the game, and to Butlerstown for being excellent hosts.
