ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

TEAM 100:

With the playing season in full flow, many people will have seen the progression of the new clubhouse development. Phase 2 (shell and core) is nearing completion, and we are preparing for Phase 3 (fit out) with your help. This is the biggest capital development project in the history of Ferrybank GAA club. With the recent upsurge in the underage section, this development will benefit these juvenile members and indeed the wider community far into the future.

This project will deliver a new building, consisting of modern dressing rooms, and a community orientated multipurpose rooms for all.

Team 100 has delivered numerous projects for Ferrybank GAA club in the past, including our hurling alley, running track, ball stoppers, pitch drainage, car park tarmacking, and the initial enabling works for this new project. We would ask everyone associated with the club; parents, supporters and players to join Team 100, and contribute to the continued development of the club and community.

Joining Team 100 involves paying a €25 per month standing-order (€6.25 per week) to the club, which covers your full-membership for the year. This works out as the price of a few cups of coffee/tea a week.

Please talk to any member, mentor, trainer or e-mail ferrybankgaa@gmail.com for an application form to join Team 100.

COUNTY DUTY:

Pride of place this week goes to the Waterford Camogie team on reaching the All-Ireland Senior Camogie final for the first time since 1945 with a thrilling one-point win over Tipperary last Saturday afternoon in Nowlan Park.

The team, which includes our own Iona Heffernan, ran out worthy winners to book their place against Cork. Iona has been a regular on the team for many years, and her dedication year-in, year-out on representing the County has been rewarded with a big day out in Croke Park on Sunday, August 6th. A lot of hard work and effort has gone into the Camogie team over the last number of years, and now, it has finally paid off. We wish them the very best of luck in the final.

Also, well done to Sean Adeyami, Conor Haley, and Fionn McGarrity on representing the Waterford Under 16 hurling team last Saturday against Wexford, while well done to Mark Flanagan who was part of the Waterford development Under 14 squad that played matches against Tipperary, Cork, and Wexford in Ferns last Saturday.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

The Intermediate hurlers begin their 2023 championship campaign with a trip to Kill next Sunday morning at 12 noon where they play Ballygunner in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. No doubt, a stiff test to start off the campaign, but the team have prepared well so far, and let’s hope they can start off with a win. Your support will be welcomed on the day, and best of luck to Paddy, Stan, Fintan, and the team.

MINOR HURLING:

Our Minor hurlers made it three wins from three last Wednesday, defeating a gallant St. Mary’s side. From the start, the team got quickly going, playing some flowing hurling, resulting in scores. To their credit, St. Mary’s kept battling away to the end, but the lads always were in control and ran out clear winners in the end. Next up is a home game against Dungarvan on Wednesday, July 26th at 7:30pm.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviour’s side maintained their unbeaten run in this year’s competition with a comfortable win over Cois Bhride in Tallow last Monday. The combined side had too much for their opponents, playing some nice quality hurling throughout the game, which no doubt pleased the selectors.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

The U13 hurlers are back in action this coming Monday, July 24th with a trip to Gracedieu to play De La Salle at 7pm, and all support is welcome on the night.

UNDER 9 HURLING:

Our Under 9 hurlers made the trip to Stradbally to play the home side in a friendly game. Thankfully, the rain stayed away, and both sides got down to action, displaying some good skills, resulting in goals and points being scored. A very useful workout for the team and thanks to Stradbally for inviting us.

UNDER 8 HURLING:

Our U8 hurlers hosted near-neighbours Slieverue last Thursday in a good, decent game. With a few of the team involved in the summer camp, that fatigue didn’t show, as they displayed great battling qualities throughout the game, with plenty of hooking and blocking being shown. Well done to all and thanks to Slieverue. Training continues on Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm, and new members are most welcome to come along and get involved.

PEADAR’S SUMMER CAMP:

The 30th running of Peadar’s Summer camp took place in the GAA grounds last week. With the exception of Tuesday, in which the weather played spoilsport, over 230 children took to the grounds to learn the skills, and were put through their paces, where a great time was had by all.

Inter-county players, Stephen Bennett, Dessie Hutchinson, Kevin Mahoney, Beth Carton, and Abby Flynn popped over and gave plenty of tips and advice to the future generation of hurlers, and a special word of thanks to all of them.

Again, a huge thank you to all the people who helped, trainers, mentors, first-aiders, to all our sponsors, thank you. Without them, it would be extremely hard for the summer camp to continue to grow and improve year-in, year-out.

ACADEMY CAMOGIE GROUP:

The Camogie Academy group made the trip to Butlerstown last Sunday to take part in a blitz. Thankfully, the weather held off, and the young generation of the club got down to business against their opponents. Plenty of hard work was shown on the field, and the team put in a huge effort, which delighted the mentors and supporters on the day. Well done to Sophia who was selected as player of the tournament, and thanks to Butlerstown for hosting.
