Reports, News, &Fixtures

JUNIOR HURLING: Our Junior Hurlers were narrowly defeated in their opening game in this years Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs Sponsored Competition in Poleberry last Thursday night on a scoreline of 2-13 of 1-12. With the scores level deep into injury time, it was the home side with 1-1 that claimed the win. Early points were traded with Jeff Lawless, and Greg Murphy scoring for Ferrybank, and despite missing a few chances, Ferrybank were always in the hunt with Kieran Doyle & Jeff Lawless scoring points. Eirns Own were dangerous going forward, but the defence kept solid. With the scores level at 0-5 each,  going in to the final five minutes, Eirns Own hit 1-3 without reply to have them leading by 1-8 to 0-5 at half time.
The second half started with points traded by either side with Kieran Doyle scoring some points from long range. Slowly Ferrybank began to get on top and a fine point from Oisin MacCathmhaoil reduced the gap to a goal. The goal Ferrybank got finally arrived when Greg Murphy was fouled in the small square, from the resulting penalty, Kieran Doyle saw his shot saved, and the ball fell nicely for Martin Freeman who blasted the ball to the net to level it up at 1-10 each. With the game in the melting pot, Ferrybank fell behind again, but James Murphy levelled it up. Eirns Own took the lead again, but a Kieran Doyle free brought it all square. In Injury time and it looked as if the game would end all square, but an Eirns Own free in put them into the lead, and moment later a long high ball into the Ferrybank area went all the way into the net to seal the win for Eirns Own. INTERMEDIATE HURLING: Our Intermediate Hurlers recorded an excellent and fully deserved win over a strong and fancied Portlaw team on a scoreline of 3-9 in 0-11 in Carrickbeg last night. Going into last nights game, Ferrybank were missing 4 key players, but that didnt deter the team turning in an excellent performance. Ferrybank got of to a dream start with Sam Lawless scoring an early goal, and Sam was unlucky not to score a second goal from close range, when his hurley failed to connect with the Sliothar, following good link up play between Tommy Carew and John Ahern. Portlaw were still a threat and scored some good points of there own. Eoin O' Neill replied with a point to level it up. Portlaw then scored three points on the trot to lead 0-7 to 1-1. Ferrybank began to tighen up in the half back line, which proved effective, as they started to win a lot of ball to the forwards with Cormac O' Driscoll, Sam Lawless, and Mark O' Brien scoring points to level it up. Just before half time, Ferrybank scored two crucial goals, first John Ahern controlled a super pass from Sam Lawless onto his Hurley and his first time shot hit the back of the net. Minutes later, Ferrybank got a third, when Sam Lawless collected a high ball, shrugged of the Porlaw fullback and drilled the ball into the net to leave Ferrybank leading 3-4 to 0-8 at the break.
Two quick second half points from Mark O' Brien and Eoin O' Neill extended the lead. But Portlaw kept coming at Ferrybank and relied with two points. Portlaw then got a Penalty, but Robbie Carew in the goal pulled of a top save. Another point from John Ahern edged Ferrybank further ahead, and as Portlaw through everything at the defence, the lads held firm, and late scores from Eoin O' Neill & Mark O' Brien sealed an excellent win for Ferrybank on the night.
