GAA NOTES

INTERMEDIATE HURLING: Our Intermediate Hurlers were deprived of a fourth successive win in this years championship, when a late free deep into injury time gave De La Salle a share of the spoils in Walsh Park tonight on a scoreline of -11pts to 1-8. Despite conceeding the late score, and shooting 14 wides, Ferrybank remain in an excellent position to qualify for the quater finals with 7 points from four games. With a number of players unavailable, this was a good chance for some of the fringe players to stake a claim for a starting place, and no doubt gave the selectors a headache for the next game by giving solid displays on the night. On the field D.L.S. opening the scoring with a point from play in the opening minutes, but Eoin O' Neill replied with a fine score.D.L.S. regained the lead, but quick scores from Sam Lawless and Chris Hoban put the Villagers into the lead. D.L.S. levelled the game up after 20 minutes. Ferrybank enjoyed good possession until half time, but hit some bad wides, leaving De La Salle of the hook, and only could return another point from Chris Hoban just before half time, leaving the game level at -4pts each. Eoin O' Neill restored the lead just after half time, but D.L.S. levelled it up again almost immeadiately. Mark Russell put over a super score to regain the lead, and moments later Mark went on a great solo run, left his marker for dead, and hit his shot of the post, but Damien Walsh was on hand to put the ball into the net from the rebound to put Ferrybank four points clear. Hoping that Ferrybank would kick on from here, it didnt materialise as De La Salle clawed their way back into the game by tagging over three unanswered points to reduce the deficit to one. Damien Ahern hit over a great score with 10 minutes to go, to extend the lead to two points, but that lead was reduced again with four minutes to go. Mark Russell fired over another great point with two minutes to go, and it looked like Ferrybank would win it from their, espically as the defence was solid and limited De La Salle to only one chance for a goal, when a one on one chance was brillantly saved from Sean Flynn. On the stroke of full time De La Salle got a point to reduce the gap to one. With the game four minutes into injury time a very very harsh free was awarded to De La Salle and it was duely put over. The full time whistle soon sounded. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the night. Next game Thursday June 16th against Mt Sion 7:30pm, venue yet to be confirmed.
