GAA NOTES

JUNIOR HURLING: Our Junior Hurlers opened their 2011 Junior Hurling Championship campagin with a seven point win over Tramore in Ferrybank tonight. This was a very good win for the team and lets hope the lads can go a long way in this competition. Played in glourious sunshine, the lads took a while to settle, as Tramore tested the defence early on, but the lads held firm, and Shane Flynn opened their account with a point. Ferrybank began to play with confidence and create chances and further points from Shane Flynn kept Ferrybank just ahead. On the stroke of half time Ferrybank got the only goal from Martin Wickham, when he latched onto a Greg Murphy ball and blasted in from close range. Excellent scores from Jason Hennessey and Shane Flynn kept the scoreboard ticking over. Ferrybank defence played very well, giving nothing away to Tramore and further scores from Shane and Eric Corcoran sealed the win on a 1-9 to -5pts. A good display from the team all round with everyone contributing. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team. TEAM: Kieran Doyle, Eddie Byrne, Mark Carew, Aidan Sinnott, Kevin Hurley, John Byrne, Stephen Quinn, Eric Corcoran(-1), Colm Roche, Jason Hennessey(-1), Shane Flynn(-7), Greg Murphy, Martin Wickham(1-0), Brendan O' Meara, Marty Freeman, Eoin Buggy, Darren Hickey, Dean Phelan, D.J. CONGRATULATIONS: To Mark O' Brien and Greg Kinsella who were on the successful East Waterford under 16 hurling team against West Waterford in the Gleeson cup last Saturday in Ardmore. No doubt a bright future lies ahead for the two lads. Also well done to Damien Ahern and Cormac Heffernan who represented the victorious Waterford Minor Hurling team last Wednesday night in Walsh Park against Tipperary. Lets hope the lads, and indeed the team can go all the way this year.
