SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
Our Senior hurlers completed their round-robin Championship campaign with defeat against Passage in Walsh Park last Sunday, and now turn their attention to the preliminary quarter-final next Saturday afternoon against De La Salle.
With Caolán Mac Cathmhaoil cancelling out an early score from Passage to level it up, Passage rattled over seven unanswered points in as many minutes, aided from some loose passing to build up a lead that they never looked back from. Two pointed frees from Mark O’Brien settled the team, but Passage were sharper and quicker with the ball, which resulted in another three points. The hard-working Ruaidhri McGarrity was causing the Passage defence a few problems, and Mark O’Brien was on hand to slot over the resulting frees. Just before half time, Passage got their opening goal, when the Passage forward went off on a run, and passed to the unmarked player who drilled a low shot to the net giving Jo-Jo no chance in the goal to leave it 1-11 to 0-7 at the break.
Early in the second half, Passage were awarded a penalty, which was dispatched powerfully to the net. Points from play from Shane Oates and Darryl Griffin kept the team battling away, but Passage got a third goal, when a low shot was well saved by Jo-jo, but the ball fell kindly to the Passage forward who tapped the ball to the net. As the game petered out, both sides exchanged points with Mark O’Brien converting another score, as Passage ran out 3-19 to 0-12 winners. It was encouraging to see a couple of players back from long layoffs and hopefully this game will bring them on for next week’s preliminary quarter final match against De La Salle which is down for 2pm on Saturday in Walsh Park, where once again, all support will be welcomed on the day.
JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
Our Junior hurlers qualified for the semi-finals of the Eastern Junior Hurling Championship with a fine display over a strong and fancied Dunhill side last Saturday evening, winning on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-8. Though, the final scoreline might sound like a straightforward win, the team had to work hard for this victory, with some last ditch defending to prevent a couple of goals being scored by the home side.
Dunhill opening the scoring with a point from play before Fionn McGarrity replied with a score. Dunhill made most of the early running, and missed a couple of scores, before landing one to edge them into the lead. However, from there on, Ferrybank began to grow in confidence and replied with seven unanswered points through Sparky (7) and a fine score on the run from wing back Sean Adeyemi.
The Ferrybank defence survived a few lucky lets off when a goal bound shot was superbly saved by Kyle Daly in goal. Moments later, a super block from Damien Ahern at the last moment prevented a certain goal, while Pawel Tomczuk cleared one off the line. However, when chances came for goals, Ferrybank took it, when a long range free from Sparky dropped short, and the bounce deceived the Dunhill goalie and into the net. Two further points from Sparky ensured the lads enjoyed a 1-10 to 0-3 lead at the break.
Dunhill started the second-half stronger, and again, some bad shooting was leaving them down. Further points from Sparky increased the lead, but again Dunhill kept coming back and hit four points on the spin to close the gap to seven. A 20 metre free was well saved by Kyle Daly in the goal, and the full-back line of Pawel Tomczuk, Damien Ahern, and Eddie Daly were on overtime, ensuring the goal wouldn't be breached, with Harry Flanagan, Alex Kinsela, and the excellent Sean Adeyemi holding firm in the half back. A fine worked score which involved Jack and Sean, saw Fionn McGarrity drilling the ball over the bar to settle the nerves, and two late scores from Fionn and Paddy Mackey closed out the scoring on the night. A fine team performance, with everyone chipping in, and the team now go on and play Mount Sion in the Semi finals. TEAM: Kyle D, Pawel, Damien A, Tiernan M, Sean (0-1), Alex, Harry, Jack, Maciez, John C, Sparky (1-13), Eddie D, Daniel G, Fionn (0-3), Tommy B, Paddy M (0-1). Greg, Cian.
The team will play Mount Sion on Friday, August 15th at 6:45pm in DLS Cleaboy on the semi-final.
MINOR HURLING:
The combined Ferrybank/St. Saviours side were defeated by Erin’s Own in Poleberry last Wednesday on a scoreline of 1-16 to 3-06. It was a tough opening half for the combined side, as Erin’s Own built up a 0-12 to 1-02 lead, with a goal from the hard-working Daniel in midfield and Conor scoring the points.
The side slowly improved at the start of the second-half scoring three of the opening four points with Conor providing the scores. Despite missing a few chances to get close, Ferrybank/St. Saviours drew level, with two quick goals in as many minutes, through Josh and Tommy. With momentum on their side, the lads couldn't get into the lead as time ticked on, and Erin’s Own edged into the lead through a sideline, and another point from play. Looking for a goal to win it, Erin’s Own caught the combined team on the break, and a long ball into the area, was dispatched into the net, giving Tom in the goal no chance. A late point from Lee closed out the scoring and the match.
With this defeat, the team are unable to make the top four, and now turn their attention to the shield section now. SCORES: Conor H (0-5), Daniel (1-0), Tommy (1-0), Josh (1-0), Lee (0-1).
