SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
It was a tough evening for our Senior hurlers at Walsh Park last Friday evening, as they were well defeated by Mount Sion in their latest game in the JJ Kavanagh and Sons Senior hurling Championship.
Conceding an early goal didn't help their cause, as Mount Sion began at a quick pace and scored a number of points. The team slowly settled and replied with a number of points through Mark O’Brien and Conor Haley, but coming up to half-time, Mount Sion capitalised on errors in the Ferrybank defence and punished them with two further goals
Despite getting a goal back in the second-half through Conor Haley (his first goal in Senior Championship), Mount Sion powered on, and took complete control in the final ten minutes, hitting 1-08 without reply to run out easy winners.
A tough night at the office for the team, who no doubt will have learned a lot from the defeat, and now go out to play Fourmilewater on Sunday, August 3rd in Fraher Field at 7pm, hopefully the team will have a few players back from injuries.
MINOR HURLING:
The combined Ferrybank/St. Saviours minor hurlers were narrowly defeated by Clonea on a scoreline of 0-21 to 0-20 last Wednesday night in St. Saviours’ GAA grounds.
With the sides level, entering the closing minutes, Clonea edged into the lead for the first time in the game, and held off the combined team, who were unlucky not to get at least a point from this entertaining game. Early scores from Daniel and Conor put the side into an early lead, before Clonea got on the scoreboard with a point. From then on, both sides cancelled each other out, with points being exchanged in the opening half, with Finn, Sam, Conor, Daniel, and Tommy pointing, and therefore edging the home team into a 0-12 to 0-10 lead at the break.
The second-half had a similar pattern to the first, with both defences on top, limiting the forwards to any goal chances, with the only real note of a goal, was a Clonea '20 metre free well saved by Sean in the goal. Points from Conor, Sam, Finn kept Ferrybank/St. Saviours just ahead, but Clonea just kept replying with their own scores, and entering the closing minutes with the sides level, two crucial points edged them into a lead. A pointed free from Conor reduced the gap, and one last chance from the home team went abegging as the referee blew the whistle.
A good game, and the team can feel very unlucky not to have gotten at least a point from the game. Next up is a trip to Bushy Park to play Bricky Rangers on Wednesday, July 30th at 7:30pm.
CAMOGIE/ COUNTY DUTY:
Hard luck to Iona Heffernan and Niamh Ahearne and the Waterford Senior camogie team that were defeated by Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final at Nowlan Park last Saturday afternoon. Credit to the team, as they acquitted themselves throughout the game, but a more experienced Cork side took control in the second half to go on and win the game.
Also, well done to Sinead Daly and the Waterford Under 14 team that took part in the annual Orla McDonagh tournament in Gortnahoe GAA grounds, Tipperary on Sunday last, where they played Tipp, Kilkenny, Roscommon.
The U10 camogie side were in blitz action last Saturday morning, which was hosted by Mullinavat GAA club, where they took on the hosts and Dicksboro, and put in a great team performance during the blitz, well done everyone.
It’s back to the training for the team, which takes place on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm, and Saturday morning from 11am, where new members are welcome to come down and get involved.
PEADAR’S SUMMER CAMP:
The 32nd Peadar’s summer camp took place in the GAA grounds last week, where up to 200 children reported for duty, to learn the skills of our national game.
Thankfully, the weather played its part, and everyone had a great time, day-in, day-out. As we all know, these events need plenty of organising, and thanks to the Ahearne family for keeping the longest running summer camp event in Ireland going, and the numbers have reflected its popularity.
Thank you also to Keltech Engineering, Oxigen refuse collection, Hickey Bakery, Countrystyle Foods, Supervalu, and Philly Hennebry sliothars for also contributing to the camp.
Thanks to Willie Maher, Conor Prunty, and Austin Gleeson for coming over and giving the young stars plenty of tips and advice, and to James Comerford and Eoin Burke who were part of the Waterford All-Ireland Minor team that brought over the cup to the kids, which proved very popular, with loads of photos taken.
To all the helpers and volunteers who ensured everything passed off safely, and roll on 2026. The camp held a competition during the event with an iPhone 16 Max Pro going to Aidan Ryan, while the Apple air pods went to Elaine Piper, so congratulations to both.
DÉISE DRAW:
The second Déise Draw of 2025 will take place this coming Friday, August 1st live on WLR FM, and hopefully, we can have a winner or two on the day.
CLOTHING COLLECTION:
The clothing collection continues, and if you have any of the following items, you can drop them down to the GAA grounds on a weeknight, or on a Saturday or Sunday morning from 10am to 12 noon. Items such as clothes, curtains, paired shoes welcomed, but once again, please do NOT send down any PILLOWS OR DUVETS.
