ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

It was heartbreak for the Junior Footballers in Carrickbeg last Thursday as they were defeated by St Mollerans in the Tony Kirwin Plant Hire competition in a penalty shootout by 3-2, after normal and extra-time failed to separate the sides over the eighty minutes. No doubt, the team could have won it in normal and extra time, but missed chances proved costly in the end.

With scores at a premium at the opening, it took ten minutes for the first score, a point from St. Mollerans, but the side was quickly level with a Graham Coady point. A couple of Ferrybank attacks failed to produce a score, as they dropped short, where St. Mollerans capitalised with two points to open up a lead. A badly needed score from Kevin Hurley reduced the gap, but St. Mollerans got in behind the Ferrybank defence, only for Charlie Atkins to pull off a smart save. Points were exchanged just before the break, with Kevin Hurley getting his second, to leave it 0-05 to 0-03 at the break.

A good start to the second-half from Ferrybank saw points from Mark O’ Brien, Kevin Hurley, and crucially a goal from Tiernan Morrissey from close range saw Ferrybank obtain a two point lead, and it looked like the team would kick on, but that was their final score. This gave St. Mollerans the chance to get back into the match with a last minute leveller to force extra-time. An early score from Daryl Griffin gave us the lead again, but Mollerans began to get on top in the opening period, and missed some good chances. However, they finally took one, just before the extra-time break, to again, square up the game. Into the second period, and St. Mollerans took up the running, and hit two points, and it looked like they would go on from there. However, a fine score from Ryan Tierney reduced the gap, and an equaliser from Darryl Griffin levelled it up 1-08 to 0-11, and took the game to penalties. St. Mollerans proved victorious in the shoot-out, on a scoreline of 3-2. It’s a tough way to go out of a competition, and no fault can be attributed to the people who missed, as we say, that’s sport, and well done to St. Mollerans on the night.

Thanks to Robbie Carew, John Ahern and Jason Hennessy for helping out with the team during the campaign.

JUVENILE NEWS:

It was another busy week for the Juveniles, with a number of new faces coming down to the GAA grounds for the first time, and we welcome them to the club, where no doubt, they will be well looked after, given excellent coaching tips along the way by the hardworking mentors.

Well done to Cathal and Sadhbh who were the top performers in the Under 6 category this week. Training continues for the Under 6 and 7 on Wednesday at 6pm, and Saturday mornings at 10am.

Our Under 8 Camogie team have been preparing hard for next week’s blitz in the SETU Arena, where Ferrybank has three teams entered for it. We wish them well for the games.

CLOTHING COLLECTION:

The Clothing Collection has now finished for the year, and thanks to everyone who contributed to it during the past year.

UNDER 14 HURLING:

No joy for the Ferrybank/St. Saviours combined side were defeated by St. Olivers at a wet and windy Stradbally last Sunday afternoon on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-04.

TEAM 100:

Ferrybank GAA club is embarking upon its biggest capital development project in its history. With the recent upsurge in underage numbers (particularly females), this development will benefit these juvenile members and indeed the wider Ferrybank community far into the future. This project will deliver a new building consisting of modern dressing rooms and a community-orientated multipurpose room for all.

Team 100 has delivered numerous projects for Ferrybank GAA club in the past, including our hurling alley, running track, ball stoppers, pitch drainage, car park tarmacking and the initial enabling works for this new project. To join Team 100, and contribute to the continued development of the club and community, please talk to any committee member, team mentor, or email ferrybankgaa@gmail.com for more details.
