ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

The Junior Footballers qualified for the final of the Tony Kirwan Plant Hire Eastern Championship with a 1-11 to 0-9 victory over a spirited Bunmahon team last Saturday in Tramore.

With very heavy underfoot conditions, both sides found it tough going in the early stages, but as the game wore on, Ferrybank adapted to them better and ran out worthy winners. Kevin Hurley opened the scoring with a point in the opening minutes, but Bunmahon despite playing against the breeze put over four unanswered points to open up a three point lead. Ferrybank began to gain a bit more possession and were awarded a penalty when Oisín MacCathmhaoil was bundled to the ground, after receiving a pass from Mj Sutton. Despite dusting himself down, his penalty was well saved by the Bunmahon goalkeeper. However, despite the miss, it didn’t deter the players as three quick points from Mj Sutton, and wingbacks Neil O’ Sullivan and Shane Oates levelled up the game. Despite missing some more scoring chances, Ferrybank regained the lead when a long range free from Kevin Hurley sailed over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net. This was then followed by a point from Cormac Heffernan. However, two late points from Bunmahon saw them reduce the gap to the minimum at the half-time break.

With the wind assisting Bunmahon in the second-half, they quickly levelled the game up. Things didn’t get any easier for Ferrybank, when they were reduced to fourteen men for ten minutes with a black card. However, this seemed to galvanise the team as they began to get a grip on the game. Points from Kevin Hurley (2) and Greg Murphy saw them regain the lead. From there on, the lads began to take control of the match, with the defence comprised of Charlie Atkins, Alex Kinsella, Shane Oates, Stephen O’ Kane and Neil O’ Sullivan holding firm, determined not to concede any goal that Bunmahon needed. In midfield, Ryan Tierney and Cormac Heffernan began to take control, while up front Oisín MacCathmhaoil and Mj Sutton set up the final two scores for Greg Murphy and Kevin Hurley, as the team ran out good winners.

Overall, this was a solid display for the team, who enjoyed a lot of possession in both halves, and could have had a few more scores on the board. It’s now onto the final next Saturday, November 6th at 12 noon in Fenor against Mount Sion, where a serious test awaits the team, so all support will be appreciated on the day.
