UNDER 12 CAMOGIE:
Pride of place this week goes to our U12 Camogie team who were crowned County ‘C champions in the WIT Arena last Saturday morning against a good Dungarvan side on a scoreline of 1-02 to 1-0. Overall, a deserved win for the girls who enjoyed a lot of possession, and could have extended their lead on a number of occasions.
The opening exchanges were keenly fought, with both sides eager for possession, looking to get the ball up to the forward line. However, both defences held firm, and it wasn’t until before the water break that Ferrybank opened the scoring, when a '65 from Cliodhna dropped short and Sophiat was first to react and slotted the ball over the bar. Dungarvan came more into it, and got a goal direct from a free which sailed into the net. Moments later, Dungarvan almost got a second only for Lily in goal to pull off a vital save from close range. Ferrybank’s defence was being kept busy with Ciara, Saoirse, Eve, Aoife and Lucy working hard, and clearing their lines. This led to a second point for Ferrybank before half-time through Cliodhna, which left Dungarvan leading by a point at the mid-way stage.
Ferrybank upped the tempo in the second-half with the midfield duo of Sophiat and Shayla leading the way, and five minutes into the second-half, Ferrybank regained the lead when Shayla latched onto a loose ball, and drove the sliothar into the net for a fine goal. From there on, the girls began to get on top, with Sophie being unlucky not to see a few shots go over the bar, with Tara, Amelie and Meabh working hard in the forward line, chances were being created by the team to extend the lead.
As hard as they tried, Dungarvan kept battling away, but weren't getting much success from the Ferrybank defence, partially due to the outstanding Aoife Kelly who drove ball after ball away each time she got it. Sophiat almost got a second goal with minutes to go, but her shot was saved, and the girls saw out the game well to claim a fantastic victory.
Well done to all players from 1 to 13 who played their part. Hard luck to Dungarvan, who no doubt, will be back next year. A special thanks to the mentors, who have given up their time, and have trained the team week in, week out, and have been rewarded with their hard work. To Julie, Amy, Iona, John, Sinead, Marguerite and Conor we say thank you. Captain of the team, Ciara Haley collected the trophy on behalf of the players, amid joyous scenes. Huge thanks to all the parents and supporters who came out and cheered on the girls.
PANEL: Lily Magee, Ciara Haley, Saoirse Firth, Eve Hennessey, Aoife Kelly, Lucy Jolly, Shayla Alyward, Sophiat Adekenen, Cliodhna Mcgarrity, Sophie Keogh-Moran, Tara Flynn, Amelie Hayden, Meabh Boylan.
UNDER 15 FOOTBALL:
Our U15 Footballers were defeated by Gaultier last Wednesday night on a scoreline of 2-13 to 5-01. Trialling by nine points at one stage, the team nearly capped an unlikely comeback, when a last minute penalty was saved by the goalie.
Gaultier lead by four points at the break, and the team had Shane Purcell to thank for with two goals in that opening half. Gaultier hit five unanswered points in the second-half to extend their lead, but two goals in as many minutes from Kyle Daly, and Shane (completing his hatrick) had the lads right back in it. However, Gaultier weathered the storm to hit over another three more, and looked like completing a routine win, but a fourth goal from Shane, and Ferrybank’s fifth, set up a frantic finish, and one last attack saw the home side awarded a penalty, only for Caolan’s shot to be saved, and Gaultier held on for the win.
A good effort from the team who kept battling away throughout the game. Next up is a home game against Ballyduff Upper on Saturday, October 10th at 3pm.
UNDER 12 FOOTBALL:
It was a mixed set of results for the U12 Footballers during the week. First up was a trip to Carrickbeg to play St. Molleran’s, and despite being second best on the night, the lads kept fighting all the way to the end, and will have learned a lot from the match.
Two days later it was another trip to Fews to play John Mitchells and the lads played some great football, resulting in goals and points being scored and ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 7-02 to 3-02. Well done to all concerned
UNDER 13 FOOTBALL:
No joy for the U13 Footballers last Sunday morning as they were narrowly defeated on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-03 in wet and windy conditions. A goal from Jack in the opening half, kept the lads in the game, but Roanmore tagged over 1-01 just before the break.
Points in the second-half from Finn and Harry levelled the game up. With both sides creating chances, Roanmore got a vital goal toward the end to edge them in front. A late rally from the side couldn’t yield a goal they needed, and a point from Jack reduced the gap, but the home side held out to claim the points. Best for the team were Evan, Rian, Jack, Harry and Finn.
