ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 19 HURLING:
The Under 19 hurlers suffered an agonising defeat to Erin’s Own last Saturday afternoon in Poleberry going down to a 1-18 to 3-11 defeat. Having trailed for almost the entire game, and at stages by eight points, Ferrybank clawed their way back into the match and took the lead with a last minute goal. However, Erin’s Own scored a goal of their own deep into injury time to claim the victory. It was the homeside who made the better start with three opening points, before Charlie Atkins replied with Ferrybank’s opening score. Erin’s Own continued to make the running and profited from some Ferrybank errors to build up at 0-11 to 0-03 lead with Ryan Tierney scoring a brace of points. However, coming up to the half-time break, Ferrybank began to gain more possession, and hit four unanswered points through Ryan (3), and Eimhin Burns to close the gap to 0-12 to 0-07 at the break.
Like the opening half, Erin’s Own made the better start after the break and extended the lead with three more scores, before Ryan Tierney replied with a point. Midway through the half, Ferrybank got a lifeline, when Ryan Tierney evaded a number of Erin’s Own defenders and hit a fine shot to the roof of the net to give the lads hope. Crucially, the team hit four wides on the trot, while Erin’s Own hit two points to lead by seven. Substitute Shane Oates scored a second goal when his perseverance was rewarded, by coming in by the end-line and scoring from an acute angle. Another point from Shane reduced the gap to three, and suddenly Ferrybank became more into it. Further points from John Collins and Neil O’ Sullivan closed it to a minimum with minutes to go. Ferrybank had the momentum now and were awarded a free. Neil O’ Sullivan delivered the ball into the Erin’s Own defence and Charlie McLoughlin was first to react to pull the ball into the net and take the lead.
Erin’s Own had an attack, and the ball went out for a '65, and from that, the ball was only half-cleared, and the Erin’s Own player pulled first time and the ball ended in the back of the net. With time virtually up, Ferrybank were unable to get into a scoring position, as the final whistle sounded.
This was a tough defeat on the team, and despite trailing for long periods, the lads never gave up, kept battling away, and almost pulled it out of the fire. Ferrybank have now completed their three matches in the group, and must now wait to see, how other matches go in the group to see have they reached the final.

BENEFIT NIGHT:
We held their benefit night in association with Martin Barrett Car Sales at Kilcohan last Saturday night, and a great night was had by all. An excellent turnout from the village made their way over. On the night, the Under 15 hurlers, who were crowned County Champions, were presented with their medals by MJ Sutton, and thanks to MJ for his help.
There was a novelty race on the night, by six of the club's players, who took part in a race around the track, and after a photo finish and a stewards inquiry, Neil O’ Sullivan was first past the post, just ahead from Stephen O' Kane, with Darryl, Naoise, Duck and Luke not far behind.
The main gate prize, which was kindly sponsored by Harvey Travel, was won by Kevin Downey. A huge thanks to all who contributed for the night, our sponsors, advertisers, people who bought nominations and purchased tickets for the night.
