INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
The Intermediate hurlers played out a draw against Portlaw
last Saturday afternoon in Dunhill, with our opponents scoring two injury time
frees to secure a share of the spoils. Going into the game, Ferrybank were
short a number of key players, and they had to battle all the way against a
side that had two players dismissed during the game.
With Sam Lawless scoring the opening point, Portlaw made
most of the running in the opening quarter, and had built up a healthy lead
before Neil O’ Sullivan and Greg Murphy pointed for Ferrybank. Another point
from Neil O’ Sullivan had Ferrybank right back in the game. However, Portlaw,
despite being reduced to thirteen players, made life difficult for Ferrybank
and scored three unanswered points to leave them leading 0-9 to 0-3. Two points
just before half-time from Cormac O’ Driscoll reduced the gap to three at the
midway stage.
Aided by the breeze in the second-half, points from Jono,
Greg and Cormac had Ferrybank level. It looked like Ferrybank would kick on
from there, but Portlaw kept battling all the way and kept in touch with points
from a number of placed balls. Points from Ryan Tierney, John Ahern and Cormac
kept the game all square. Entering the closing minutes, two fine points from
Sam edged Ferrybank in front, and it looked like they would go on and win from
there. However, two late frees conceded by the defence were punished by Portlaw,
thus ensuring a draw at the end.
It was a frustrating day for the hurlers, as they found it
hard to get going at any stage of the game, but as least they came away with a
point to keep them unbeaten in the group stages.
PANEL: Jono Brown (0-01), Nicky Ryan, Davy Atkins, Ben
Fitzpatrick, Damien Ahern, Cormac Heffernan, Tommy Carew, Ryan Tierney (0-01),
Neil O’ Sullivan (0-02), Greg Murphy (0-02), Sam Lawless (0-03), Oisin
MacCathmhaoil, Jeff Lawless, John Ahern (0-01), Cormac O’ Driscoll (0-07),
Stephen O’ Kane, Darryl Griffin.
JUNIOR HURLING:
The Junior hurlers were defeated in their second game in
this year’s John J Murphy sponsored competition last Thursday night by Roanmore
on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-11. Despite missing a number of players, the lads
fought back as the match went on, when it looked like Roanmore would run away
with this game.
Despite conceding an early goal, Ferrybank replied with a
Jack Haley point, but the Roanmore forward line began to pick off points,
causing Ferrybank's defence a few problems, and began to build up their lead.
Eoin O’ Neill’s accuracy kept Ferrybank in the game with some well taken points.
At the midway stage, Roanmore led by 1-11 to 0-08.
Ferrybank began the second-half well, but lacked the cutting
edged up front, missing a few scores. Midway through the second-half, a
Roanmore free that wasn’t dealt with by the defence ended up in the net. However,
the lads kept battling and were rewarded when Barry O’ Gorman was first to
react to the loose ball, and drove the ball to the net. The lads were awarded a
penalty late on, but Eoin O’ Neill’s shot was well saved by the Roanmore
goalie.
Despite this defeat, the lads can take heart with their
effort, especially the younger players, with Maciez Tomczuk, Jake Brophy, Cian
Martin, Jack Haley, Luke Butler and Charlie Atkins, putting in a great effort.
Next up for the team is a trip to play Butlerstown next
Thursday, June 27th at 7:30pm.
MINOR HURLING:
The 2019 Minor hurling Championship commences on Wednesday,
July 10th with a home game against Erin’s Own at 7:30pm.
UNDER 15 HURLING:
Our U15 hurlers recorded a victory against a very good St.
Saviours side last Friday night, winning on a score line of 4-11 to 4-05 in
their opening game in this year’s championship.
Trailing for long periods of this game, it was only in the
final ten minutes that the team pulled away. Two early goals put St. Saviours
in control in which the Ferrybank defence went AWOL, but the team clawed their
way back and were level at the break at 2-02 to 0-08.
Like the opening half, St. Saviours came out and made a
blistering start with 2-01, and things didn’t look good for the home side.
However, Odhran Power in defence, Shane Purcell, Adam Aspel and Izaak Richards
led the fightback. Ruaidhri McGarrity hit three fine goals to put Ferrybank in
the driving seat. From there on, the lads drove on to record a fine win.
Next up for the team is a trip to Leamybrien to play
Kilrossanty on Monday, July 1st at 7pm.
PANEL: Kyle Daly, Sean Heffernan, Loughlan Flanagan, Odhran
Power, Conor Daly, Izaak Richards, Shane Purcell, Adam Aspel, Ruaidhri

MacCathmhaoil, Aaron Meaney.

UNDER 12 HURLING:
No Joy for the U12 hurlers who went down narrowly to

score-line of 2-12 to 2-6.
UNDER 11 HURLING:
Our U11 hurlers went down to Mount Sion in the City League
last Thursday night on a score-line of 2-04 to 0-6. A few goal chances went a
begging for the team, and it proved the difference, as the homeside scored two
crucial goals that proved the difference. The team play their final group game
this coming Friday, June 28th with a home game against Na Gaeil at
6:30pm.
