GAA NOTES

INTERMEDIATE HURLING: Our Intermediate Hurlers turned in a poor performance yesterday in the Intermediate Hurling Championship against Portlaw in Walsh Park, and were defeated on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-6. Despite a bright opening few minutes in which Ferrybank had a couple of goal chances that werent converted, Portlaw got on top in all areas of the field, as Ferrybank lost their focus and shape conceeding to many soft scores leading to a comfortable win for Portlaw. Sam Lawless opened the scoring on two minutes for Ferrybank, but Portlaw responded with 2 quick points before Cormac O' Driscoll replied with a fine point. Ferrybank had two good goal chances in the space of a few minutes which they didnt take, and almost straight away, Portlaw scored the only goal of the game, when a long ball down the centre wasnt dealt with and the ball ended up in the net. That score gave Portlaw the momentum to drive on, which they did, winning the breaking ball, and putting over three unanswered points. Mark Russell scored a fine side line point to reduce the gap, but two more points from Portlaw extended the lead to 1-7 to 0-3 at the break. Hopes of a comeback in the econd half didnt materialise as Portlaw contuined their scoring spree with four early points. Cormac O' Driscoll, Mark Russell, Sam Lawless did get three points back for Ferrybank, hoping a comeback was on the cards, but Portlaw again finished stronger with five more points to leave it at full time 1-16 to 0-6. No doubt the players will be disappointed with their performance, and the team is better than the performance they gave in Walsh Park, but they will have to improve considerably for the Quater finals of the Eastern Championship which will take place next month either against St Mollerans or Clonea. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team. PEADERS SUMMER CAMP: The 21st Peaders Summer Camp concluded last Friday afternoon in the Gaa field. With Glorious weather on our side for the week, 230 aspiring young hurlers took to the field for the week, learning the skills of our national game, and also meeting new friends. A special word of thanks goes to the orgainising committee, without their effort and planning over the last couple of months, it would have been very difficult to have a summer camp. To all the helpers during the week, over 50 people gave up their time to help out in any small way, ensuring it ran smoothly it was very much appreciated. To Michael Ryan (current Waterford Senior hurling Manager), Kevin Moran & Stephen Daniels (Current Waterford Senior hurling players), Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny Senior Hurler), John O' Shea (Current Sunderland & Ireland Soccer Player) thanks to them for coming over and give some excellent advice and coaching tips. To our Sponsers, local man Ray Breen of Kel-Tech Engineering who has been our main Sponser of the summer camp for many years, a sincere thanks to Ray for his kind and loyal support of the Summer camp. Also to our other Sponsers who helped out during the week, it was really appreciated. So roll on 2013, and the 22nd year of Peaders Summer camp.
