Gaelic Football/HURLING CHALLENGE GAMES Report for Under 5/6/7/8 YRS AT FERRYBANK GAA Grounds AT 2PM on 8/11/08
Team: Luke Butler, Jack Haley, Reece McDonald, Jack O’Brien-Moran, Ben Fitzpatrick, Charlie Hoban, Eihnon Burns, Kian Byrne, John Collins,Aaaron Dineen,Reece Phelan, Conor Ahern, Jake Brophy,David Olla, Gavin Fox.The players played Kisheelin in a friendly challenge matches in Gaelic Football and Hurling. The weather unfortunately was the star of the show with freezing rain followed by 8o mph winds. Needless to say we played on through with great heart and vigour. It really encapsulated the parish spirit with parents and mentors soaked and I mean soaked with a change of jersey for some players needed.
The Gaelic Football saw a massive improvement from last week and easily matching the more experienced Kilsheelin side who’s strengths are in Gaelic Football. The match ebbed and flowed but ended with splendidly taken scores by both sides and the value of the Hurling Alley with astro turf was shown to be worth its investment allowing matches to go ahead in a good setting. A few bruises will be apparent from the match but a great experience for the future for these Footballers and even a first of possibly some Kilkenny Footballers of the future.
A quick dash to the changing rooms were needed to recharge the batteries for both sides and change to hurling gear. The measure of the weather at this stage was that I would say the weight of every jersey was doubled from water. It would be fair to say that even do Kilsheelin had a majority of 8’s with the Ferrybank side mostly 7’s,we took the hurling game to Kilsheelin with great passion and no small skill. The hurling alley made the game more condensed and this suited our players with great play from some of our youngest players in trying weather conditions.
It takes time to adjust to the different patterns of play and holding possession and we will take more from these matches than Kilsheelin. Coaching of these youngsters came to the fore with use on both feet and good use of hand passes. The need for more team interplay is apparent but the weather ruled out good cohesion with freezing hands and sheeting rain didn’t hinder the determination to show our will to win. We will look at the positives from these matches but also concentrate on problem areas to make steady improvements inch by inch whether passing/striking faster or holding possession too long. This match and weather will long live in our memory ranking up there for the hardy supporters/parents up there with trip to Ballygunner for freezing weather last year. (Noah’s Ark was spotted at one stage but it may have been a mirage.)
Special thanks to all the parents (especially the mothers and
friends ) who got the kids to the venue as we could not do this without your support. – mentors involved in this core group of up and coming talented players. Coaches on the sideline for the day John Burns, John Brophy,Fintan Byrne, Dave Butler, John Haley. It was great to see the difference in Skills after regular sessions in our New Outdoor Hurling Alley (Astro Surface) across from Post Office & down Abbeylands Road on right every Wednesday 6.30-730 & Saturday 9.45-10.45am €2 for both sessions with qualified coaches.
