FERRYBANK JUVENILE GAA U-5/6/7 MATCH V SLIERVERUE 17/9/08

HURLING MATCH REPORT FOR Under 5/6/7 YRS AT FERRYBANK GAA Grounds AT 6.30pm 17/9/08.
The Ferrybank Under 5/6/7 Panel had their near neighbours Slieverue GAA Club over for a well anticipated friendly. This was played on the field on Wednesday 17th September 2008 at 6.30-7.30

Team: Kian Byrne, Adam O’Grady, James Tyler, Luke Butler, Jack Haley, Reece McDonald, Gavin Fox, Theo Kavanagh, Jack O’Brien-Moran, Dillion McDonald,Dillion Smith,Ben Fitzpatrick, Charlie Hoban, Eihnon Burns,Cody Griffin,Trevor Madigan,Dillion Smith,Gavin Buckley,Jake Butler.
The players played their part in a epic match against Slieverue U-6/7 in a full game setting with markers assigned and game faces evident. The concentration and play was intense with little give and take for long periods in the first half from strong Ferrybank pressure which led to the first goal from which the whole team can take a clap on the back. It was evident and great to see the coaching of these youngsters coming to the fore with striking on both sides of the body from our kids which is a big step due to the readjustment needed to get the ball on their favoured side which is a natural inclination but which in the heat of a game the seconds needed are the difference in winning a challenge or scoring. The game flowed back and forth until further scores occurred which are the result of great team inter play using the wings in the conditions. The weather had a severe effect with strong winds, freezing rain which led to a number of the smaller kids needing a warm top afterwards.
When called upon During this period our goal keeper made numerous saves to deny Slieverue but an equalising goal was recorded just before half time from a strong shot from a midfield player. The second half started in a hectic pace. It was the first experience of this for many players under 5/6. It was a great turn out for the Club with double the number of players for Ferrybank which meant a new change of players at half time. It was good to see so many new faces proudly representing the Club wearing the colours for the first time with great support from their parents.
The parents and grand-parents watching saw a thrilling match played in fine spirit and if any relations passed on are viewing from on high, they would smile with pride seeing this new generation of Ferrybank players following in Community effort and togetherness in the village. I would like to thank the Slieverue coaches and mentors for travelling on what was a bad weather night.

Good ball skills were on show and each week sees better co-ordination from practice which will re-affirm the training given. Every challenge was clean and great heart was shown especially by our smaller participants. Playing for the first time. It was a team effort and everyone can take a clap on the back being able to express their excitement.
We may yet get the next generation of Waterford /Kilkenny players from this panel of talented players but their will be stronger tests ahead to forge greater technique/skill and experience which can’t be bought(watch out Roanmore Tournament 2009 U-8). The strength of our club is being built up step by step from our youth teams and the Club will get more days in the sun with the names of Brophy, Alcock, Collins, Kehoe, Haley,Byne ,Butler e.t.c future stars in Hurling/Football but any team is a combined unit needing the will of all pulling together.
Special thanks to all the parents (especially the mothers and friends ) who got the kids to the venue as we could not do this without your support. A special mention for the Ferrybank Boys & Girl’s School 1st/2nd/Senior & Junior infant class e.t.c which comprises the majority of the team and the good discipline and teamwork shown is a credit to their parents and teachers Ms. Doolin and Ms. Ryan & Mr.Ring (Boys)School and the Girls School(Ms. Egan/Ms.Quinlan/Ms. Walsh/Ms.Fogarty – mentors involved in this core group of up and coming talented players. Coaches on the sideline for the day John Haley, Fintan Byrne, John Burns,John Brophy,Dave Butler. It was great to see the difference in ball lift & striking of the ball skills displayed after only a few sessions in our New Outdoor Hurling Alley (Astro Surface) across from Post Office & down Abbeylands Road on right every Wednesday 6.30-730 & Saturday 10-11am €2 for both sessions with qualified coaches.
